Setting this option will cause a search for similar threads to be automatically done when a new thread is posted. These similar threads are then linked to from the newly posted thread's page. This can have an effect on performance.

I tested it and I like this hack, but it only works with vbulletin search, not with mysql search. If this would be possible in future releases I'd really like to use this hack.

No you don't, but you should go to maintenavce and then Rebuild Similar Threads. It will work even without "Automatic Similar Thread Search" enabled.

I was having the same issue as most people here... I installed it and it says some text under the title saying that it will search for similar threads... but when I type something into the title box nothing happens.

The reason seems to be that you need the SPECIFIC version of jquery that the author uses because he probably hardcoded the call to it.

SOLUTION:
DOWNLOAD THIS VERSION OF THE JS FILE AND PUT IT IN YOUR CLIENTSCRIPTS FOLDER

Any specific errors or browser? Have you had this mod installed before with edited templates, did you try reverting?

It works fine on 3.7.2 for me in IE7. I don' t know that there should be any version issues, I didn't see anything that would be volitile with vBulletin versions.

Works with 3.6.0. Thanks for this it prove to be invaluable on my forum.

I'm somewhat of a novice and the installation was straight forward.

Import the 'jquery-1.1.3.1.pack.js' into your clientscript directory.

Upload the product via Admin CP --> product manager

THEN you can adjust the settings for 'Check for similar threads? - Disable for certain forums'

This is located here: vBulletin Options > Message Posting and Editing Options, and then scroll to the bottom of the page.

I think some members might be looking for this option before they upload the product, this is what I did and it wasn't there, nor will it be until you upload the product.

Great plugin, but is there any way to exclude it from getting results from one forum? I have a forum that just has the RSS bot posting in it (about 30K threads) and I would rather keep those results out of it.

Also, it would be great if it automatically searched for threads after 3 or 5 seconds they stop typing in the title field.

I'm sorry, this mod works great but something has happened on the user registration.
Nobody with this mod installed can finish a new user registration form due to the message:
The username already exist.

Disabling this mod was the only thing that fixed this "big issue".

After some initial difficulties I got this hack to work in 3.6.8

Had the same problems as many others, the first being finding the area to enable/disable the hack. After a bit of searching I found it.

VBULLETIN OPTIONS > MESSAGE POSTING AND EDITING OPTIONS.

Second to last setting, "check for similar threads" (set to YES)

So I turned the hack on and got the message when posting new thread indicating that it would search for similar threads but it never did. After reading every reply to this hack I followed the advice of others with the same issue. Rebuilding seach index did not solve the issue, but upon reverting jquery from 1.2.6 to 1.1.3.1 (version referenced by the author) the hack works fine.

The only two notable issues are that it suggests some rather old threads and you have to either click in the thread title box or move to the post text box to execute the search query. The latter issue is not really a big deal but I would like to limit the threads retrieved to the last 30 or 60 days. Might be something I can do with my regular search options to help out with this but it would be nice if a future version of the hack had some options to direct or limit the search.

I use fulltext search on my board and have went from 4 letter word minimum to 3 letter to see if it improves on search relevence, but with my size board this could ultimately be too resource hungry.

Overall I do like the hack, and the concept sofar, and it should save on at least some of the same old questions being posted over and over.

Hello, I've used this mod for quite some time and always through it did a great job. But someone today contacted me with a question and I don't know the answer. They were creating a new thread with the title Red sphagnum and some suggestions came up but were all pretty old, newest of the 5 being from 08-28-2005... Even though there was a thread titled sphagnum that was created on 11-22-2008. So we're confused on why that topic would not have been shown instead of the older ones. When I was testing it, I used his thread topic and sure enough it didn't show that thread from Nov. but it also isn't showing the new thread that he created today with the exact title I was using to test it... I'll add a screen show of this with the newer topic that was not shown in the results to the right...

You must completely UNINSTALL autotagger. There is a conflict, and it must be uninstalled and not simply disabled.

Be sure to uninstall autotagger
If you installed an updated version of jquery-1.1.3.1.pack.js, then you need to edit the product .xml file and update it because it's going to be looking for "jquery-1.1.3.1.pack.js" to make things run.
This addon is reported to conflict with other addons, which ones, unknown. (the high number of reports about conflicts, hooks, etc. suggests it might be worthwhile to find a different way to integrate with vbulletin.)

(BTW I'm in the not working crowd.)

If someone could develop a mod that allowed for a 'solutions' bag to hover right where post #2 hovers, or tag a post as a solution and 'float' it, that would certainly be Mod of the Month (MOTM) material. It would fix the issue of digging through long threads with 200+ replies.

I've got two suggestions for this modification:

1. Gray out the message box in the New Thread form for an Admin-specified amount of time (maybe 10 seconds), which will give the user time to browse the links that are automatically populated by this feature. In the grayed-out message box, add text that tells the user to click the links above to ensure their question hasn't been answered before. This feature should likely have the option to be disabled on a per-forum basis.

2. Allow the admin to enter a hard-coded link below all of the threads - this would be helpful for sites that have an FAQ thread or forum where common questions are cataloged/linked.

I think the above two features would force more people to use the features.

Another thought, and I don't know if this is possible, would be to have a cookie track whether or not the similar threads that show up have been read or not - this way, the user cannot click on the message box to type their question until they've clicked on all the links in the similar thread box. That would be even better than the first suggestion above.
