Just tested this out and its a nice feature that can really enchance the user experience. To be honest this should be standard in vbulletin.

^ That's the only setting, you dont need anything else ...

Anyways ... Installed and working perfectly ... I love this and I agree with everyone else, this should be standard in vB ...

Nice work Dismounted. Hopefully this will be standard in the next vb update, because I cant stand the way the search is currently.

No, it's just my standard ReadMe. :p

excellent, and really should be part of VB by default. Nominated for MOTM as it really does change the user experience.

Installed... :)

Thanks....

How can I validate that this is working differently than the native search?

I've tried several phrases with the mod on and off, but I get the exact same results?

Badger

If you're not getting the following message when entering words in the search that are shorter than the "minimum word length" specified in your AdminCP, then this Hack is working ...

The search term you specified (***) is under the minimum word length (*) and therefore will not be found. Please make this term longer.

If this term contains a wildcard, please make this term more specific.

Thanks for the response... :)

I do not get that message, but if I search our entire forums for the word "the" (as an example), I get the following message:

Please specify some words or valid user names to search on. There were no matches for those that you specified.

I thought that this mod was supposed to bypass and extend the search capability past the short length limiation, or have I misunderstood what it does? The word "the" must occur somewhere in our thousands of posts?

BTW, this occurs with this mod turned ON...

Regards,
Badger

Edit: if I turn the mod OFF and serach for "the", I get the following on a new screen:

The search term you specified (the) is under the minimum word length (4) and therefore will not be found. Please make this term longer.

If this term contains a wildcard, please make this term more specific.

It's working correctly for you then.

BadgerDog

It's working correctly for you then.

Thanks Paul, that's what I thought, but then why in 6,293 posts, does the word "the" (no quotes) not appear according to the first message with the mod turned ON?

Regards,
Badger

Edit: plus .. when I search with mod ON for "45 days" (no quotes), I get:

The following words are either very common, too long, or too short
and were not included in your search: 45

Sorry for being so thick ... :o

I think you're misunderstanding what this hack does. This hack removes words that are shorter than your "minimum word length" specified, which in turn removes that annoying "The search term you specified (*) is under the minimum word length (*)...." message.

If you want to include those short words, you could just lower you minimum word length.

hmmm - You should put that explanation in the 1st post :P
I actually thought the hack is an inclusive one which would accept the shorter words LOL

I found a small bug. When searching for all threads by a member, the line:

The following words are either very common, too long, or too short and were not included in your search:

appears in the search results. This line isn't relevent to the search so shouldn't be displayed?

Thanks

After updating to 1.1 I've lost the message "were not included...". i.e., "its all that" drops the words its and all, but doesn't say why.

Actually, maybe 1.0 was doing this too. If there are no results, the message doesn't appear. It appears normally if there are results.

If it hasn't got any results, it shows the standard "Sorry - no matches. Please try some different terms." error.

If it hasn't got any results, it shows the standard "Sorry - no matches. Please try some different terms." error.Right. But isn't that misleading? It leads the user to believe they searched for three words when really they only searched on one.

Right. But isn't that misleading? It leads the user to believe they searched for three words when really they only searched on one.

I my opinion it's much more annoying not even getting any results because one word was 3 letters and another word was 4

Example in the regular search

hat - no results because of 3 letter word
hat stand - no results because of 3 letter word in phrase
stand - produces results

Example with this mod:

hat stand - produces some results because it bypasses the 3 letter word error

I love this idea, vbulletin should have this built in.

but the first search I did "a family guy" changed my search to "fmily"

when I search for "b family guy" then it searches for "family" like it is suppose to.

I just searched for "I family" and it was changed to "famly" so it seems to do it with other characters also.

Great hack Dismounted...;)

One little glitch: the automatic version checking from ACP doesn't work. Could you look into it? I just upgraded to 1.2 and if I do the check version it tells me last version is 1.0.

Thanks for your work. :)

hum, btw, a little note... why do you add a setting to activate it, if the only thing we need to do is deactivate the product if we do not need it?!... this is redundant and add more entries to the settings table... my 2?.. ;)

btw, where is the vote button?

Dismounted

I had this installed, but it isn't allowing users to use the words in my 'goodwords' options. Looking at the code, it looks like my users should be able to search for these 'goodwords', but they aren't. I'm running 3.6.8 PL2. Is anyone else seeing this problem?

There seems to be a bug with searches wrapped in quotes.

When I search for "Sketches By Boz" with Continue Search enabled, the result is no matches and the text in the search form is changed to "sketches*boz".

When I search for "Sketches By Boz" with Continue Search disabled, the proper matches are returned.

There is no need for this mod in 3.8.* and 3.7.* as this is standard functionality in vBulletin.
