View Full Version : Mobile/Cell Phone Style

A version for 3.7 can be found HERE
A super light style designed for Mobile Phones - use in conjunction with THIS or THIS modification to redirect mobile phone users to this theme.
This is a work in progress, and any and all feedback is greatly appreciated - I will do my best to act on bugs and suggestions.
Check http://mobility.mobi (not my site) from a mobile device to see how it looks or you can visit via an emulator HERE (http://ready.mobi/results.jsp?uri=http%3A%2F%2Fmobility.mobi&locale=en_EN&em=null&ch=null)
Whilst this doesn't have ALL functionality of vBulletin default, it does allow browsing forums, replying to posts, creating new topics and sending/receiving PMs.
I'm new at this, be kind.
Version History
1.00 - Initial Release
2.00 - Validates Strict XHTML 1.0 on http://validator.w3.org/
Added PM notification, fixed new reply, new thread, new PM to look better. Can edit posts. Added Logout and also an "Up" menu which will take you to the parent forum of where ever you currently are. Images in posts are replaced with a link to the image - unfortunately this meant I had to do teh same to smilies which all now show up as :-) (https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/images/smilies/rolleyes.gif) (which is a link to teh smilie itself). It is now approaching a fully functioning skin - not sure what else you would want to do from a mobile phone/PDA. A few small bugs fixed too.
2.01 - Added viewing thread subscriptions, who's online (both only for logged on members) and quick reply
2.02 - Quick reply for logged on members only
2.03 - fix a w3.org validation issue, added "mark forums read" to forum home
2.04 - Internal release
2.05 - added mark as read to 'new posts' added 'sub' (Subscribed threads) and 'online' (who's online) footer navbar forum name in post title (as link) fixed a few things.
2.06 - Page numbers appear in thread bits
- UserCP page, with access to PMs, Subscribed Threads, Edit Signature, Edit Options (which includes changing view from oldest first to newest first
- Basic MOD options added - can delete posts and threads (and undelete also)
- Remember me added to login in footer (duplicate login screens removed
- I should probably test this latest version more extensively and re validate it, but thought you wouldn;t mind a pre-release
2.07 - Added requests, revalidated STRICT XHTML on w3.org. If you have modified your existing install of this, I suggest you backup the style first before upgrading with this new version just in case you want to roll back.
2.08 - Remove backlink from FORUMHOME
2.09 - updated version numbers on templates to 3.6.9
2.10 - added securitytoken field to all forms
A Spanish translation can be found in post # 200 HERE (https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showpost.php?p=1460954&postcount=200)
Install Instructions
Unzip and upload the wireless.css to your forum root.
Import the XML as a new style WITH NO PARENT.
Upgrade Instructions
Unzip and upload the wireless.css to your forum root (overwriet existing).
Import the XML and merge with existing. Alternatively you could delete the existing mobi style and re-upload fresh.
Keywords: Mobile, Cell, Portal, Mobi, Light, PDA, Phone
Screen Shots - Don;t be put off by the colours, these are all very easily changed by editing the CSS file. If you need help, just ask. I did these from a desktop browser with the window resized to 240px wide - to get a proper idea of the look, use the emulator link mentioned above. It looks MUCH better from an actualy small screen device!

How to hide a style from style chooser
This template edit will allow you to 'hide' a style from the Style Chooser so users can't select a specified style.

can you add some screen shots ?
I checked the emulator, but would like some images still.

Excelent work Dartho! This is it! You can also add to this skin:
1. LOG OUT button
2. Display nick name of the memeber
3. LOG IN text boxes on the top of the page

Thanks Derek - I'll look into those!
Just noticed the New Topic/Thread input screens aren;t too flash - I'll fix that up a bit also.
Loco - Not sure how to screen cap from a mobile phone - I was going to add screen shots, but they would have simply been screen captures of the emulator...

any chance this could integrate into vbadvanced so those coming to the "front page" could be redirected into the forums so the theme could be applied?
dartho
07-06-2007, 12:08 AM
there is probably a better way - say a plugin that checks if the scrip it vbadcanced and send directly to the forums home...
Easier - You could edit the adv_portal template and replace with something like this:
$stylevar[htmldoctype]
<html>
<head>
$headinclude
<meta http-equiv="Refresh" content="2; URL=forum.php" />
</head>
<body>
$header
$navbar
<div align="center"><a href="forum.php">Portal Disabled in Mobile View - Click here if your browser does not automatically redirect you.</a></div>
$footer
</body>
</html>

pardon my ignorance - but how do you go about updating styles?
Just upload as normal? I don't see anywhere where you can allow an overwrite...

With styles, you need to go into your AdminCP. From teh menus on the left, select "Styles & Templates" and then teh "Download / Upload Styles" submenu.
Then on the right hand pane, click teh browse button and browse to the XML file. Then (assuming you don;t want/need to change the other default settings - be very careful when changing these!) click the "Import" button at the bottom of the pane.

Looks good to me apart from:
- Logon box would look batter at the top of the screen
- None on the images I have displaying on the main forum are showing up
As per:
http://www.4winmobile.com/news/MScreen001.png
http://www.4winmobile.com/news/MScreen002.png
Much improved though!

Not really designed with vbadvanced / other portal in mind - only for forums.
That being said, you should be able to fix up the image problem by checking the image paths in the Style manage for this style (copy the paths from your default Style)
To remove the Vbadvanced portal - see post #9 in this thread. ALternatively you could edit the same template and remove the side columns (most people display the important stuff in the centre column anyway.
I've put the login at the bottom - on small screens (say an old nokie) the login filles the whole screen when at the top, also on some much older phones it's not possible to actually
login at all. ALso, sometimes when I check my forum, i don;t want to log in - just check the latest posts and get off again with no one seeing me - so moving it to the bottom seemed best compromise.
That being said - I could post what to cut and paste form $footer template to $header template so you can modify it yourself?
BTW - "Who's Online" is also optomised for teh small screen (with less detail) but there is no menu link to it - just edit your URL and visit "online.php" if you want to get here. WHen I get more fgeatures mobile friendly, I intend on adding a seperate "links" page.

This looks pretty good, I'm using it on www.overclockingwiki.org/forums (http://www.overclockingwiki.org/forums) right now and its better than the other mobile template I was using. However when I try to test it (http://ready.mobi/results.jsp?uri=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.overclockingwiki. org%2Fforums&locale=en_EN&em=null&ch=null#Valid%20Markup%20.) I get a score of 3 with some invalid markup errors. Would you mind taking a look?
Also, the who's online would be awesome, I'd really like to have that asap.

G'day Dekard,
A few things - it doesn't look like you have uploaded the wireless.css to your forum root - this is only an appearance thing - as well as notifying of threads with new posts (turns the background green on the forum with new threads in it)
The main grumble is coming from the 'bbpixels' link in your footer - you should eithr remove this link if you can, or remove "target=_blank" from the link.
It does validate XHTML 1.0 Strict, but if this isn't enough for ready.mobi. you can get around this by changing the doctype to <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//WAPFORUM//DTD XHTML Mobile 1.0//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-strict.dtd">
To change doctype, go to the style options and in the miscellaneous section there is a 'HTML Doctype' option - paste the above code in. This is a kludge, but it works. I tried writing for Mobile - but then it failed other validators, so I figured XHTML 1.0 was a safe bet for most browsers and stuck with it. One of teh differences is using <br> as opposed to <br /> which just seems silly to me!
For reference the original doctype is <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Strict//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/2002/REC-xhtml1-20020801/DTD/xhtml1-strict.dtd">
re: Who's Online - where should I put the link, or should I just add a "Nav" menu to the top now with all the extra links?
Thanks!

I have a user requesting something that I think would probably be a good addition.
How about adding a link at the top to subscribed threads? How hard would this be to do?
dartho
07-09-2007, 11:21 PM
I should be able to add a subscribed threads screen!
Will also add a quick reply box at the bottom of threads.
may be a few days though.....
BTW - with this style, don;t be put off by the colours, they are all easily changed by editing the CSS file. The ones I've used are from teh web safe color palette (Should display as is on all 256+ colour devices)
Need help, just ask!

looks like you are not validating this skin. try adding a "?sytleid=xx" (where xx= the styleid of t his skin) to the URL you are submitting. To be able to pass a styleid=xx in the URL it needs to be user selectable. Alternatively you need to use a mod such as this one to force this skin on mobile devices

I do have that mod installed... and I allow this style to be user selectable. The emulator was picking up the right style because it shows a picture example of what it looks like.

I changed the DocType as you suggested in an earlier post and it seems to have curtailed many of the errors on validation and improved from a "Bad" rating to a "Fair" rating.
Following are the errors I get now:

Feedback from one of my Mods:
I'm using the mobile version today. Important missing bit for me is mark all read. I'm not going to have time to read everything - guess many mobile viewers wouldn't - so after I've read what I'm interested in it would be nice to mark the rest read.
ShackMaster
07-13-2007, 10:16 PM
Very good suggestion on the "Mark As Read"... I use that quite often.
dartho
07-13-2007, 10:33 PM
Updated - "Mark as Read" added to forum home, fixed w3.org validation errors.
@Shackmaster - you have some other plug ins installed which are causing the errors on readi.mobi. Unless you have a .mobi domain name, I wouldn't worry too much around this. Much more important is validating on http://validator.w3.org If you do want to tweak for ready.mobi, that can be done but you'll need to remove plugins and tweak the DOCTYPE (which I think there are instructions to on the forst page somewhere)

RedGTiVR6
07-15-2007, 12:03 AM
i've just found an issue as an admin...I NEED the admin functions to be visible so I can remotly administer the boards. for instance, I need to be able to move threads...
dartho
07-15-2007, 02:00 AM
admin functions would be too much to put into a mobile/cell phone style I think, but when I get the PDA style done, I'll look at adding them into that.
It's outside the scope of a style - but it shouldn't be too hard to add to the mobile detect add-on to bypass detection if the user is an admin? Same goes for your request Derek_Trotter - what sort of logging? A simple text file shouldn't be too hard to generate for each time a mobile device makes a page request?

<meta http-equiv="Refresh" content="2; URL=http://metallifukinca.com/forums.php" />
line.
It would probably be a good idea to edit the navbar template for this skin and make sure that Home link point to forums.php rather than index.php

I see the issue - vbadvanced integrated into your forums - every page is a vbadvanced page. I didn't know this was possible..
try this one as your adv_portal template - it will only disaply your centre CMPS blocks :
$stylevar[htmldoctype]

Feedback from one of my Mods who has been using it extensively:
ok, so I've used the mobile version on the S710 for a couple of days now and so here's some feedback:
- The threads in New Posts search, do not show the forum that they are in, even when you go into the post. This is especially important for Mods as they can't easily tell if they're in the wild or not.
-No page numbers listed on the New Posts page so you can't opt to go straight to page number 1 for example.
-No mark all as read option in the new posts list
-The portal display isn't the best
-No moderation tools
-Quick reply box only appears on the last page of a thread
Comments?

You sure? Unless I'm looking in the wrong place, I can see them when I log onto your site? Page nav is however a little messy, I'll fix this in the next update
-No mark all as read option in the new posts list
I'll see what I can do...
-The portal display isn't the best
Portal? Or the style itself? Colours can easily be modifed by editing the CSS, as for layout, I've tried to make it so it will display OK on the widest range of devices, not just new devices.
-No moderation tools
There are no plans for moderation tools in this style
-Quick reply box only appears on the last page of a thread
This is in the next update
Next update also has a who's online, and subscribed threads plus whatever else I add in the mean time.

May I ask why basic mod tools are not planned at all?
dartho
07-26-2007, 08:08 AM
Navigation menu space is at a premium is the main reason. For those browsing from a small screen mobile phone, it can get very cluttered, esp given that drop downs may not necessarily be supported.
I do plan on taking this skin (once I think it is out of beta stage) and extending it for more modern/larger screen devices - I will add Mod controls in that skin...

version 2.05 released with some requested changes added!
As of this release I have added a very small link on the Forum Home below the footer (this link only appears on Forum home - not every page). I have kept the size of this link to a minimum (it currently reads "2.05 by TWF (http://thewholeforce.com)" where TWF is a link back to one of my websites where I primarily developed this skin for and 2.05 is the current version)
Sorry to do this, but I have spent many hours on this and have decided to get some benefit (other than warm fuzzys and the adoration of my peers) from it.
You may remove this with my permission after making a paypal donation. This can be done via the "Support Developer" link above (just a few links below the "Mark as Installed" link).

We still have 2 portal login areas- 1 high in the portal with a remember me option, and one at the bottom, without a 'remember'
The Forum page does only have 1 login area, but it doesn't have a 'remember me' option, so it is necessary to log in each visit if PIE has been closed.

Yep - there is currently no "Remember Me" option - next release
There really isn't much I can do about the portal in a VBulletin skin.
As for the new posts screen - I get page numbers on your site via my PDA - page numbers appear at the very top just below the nav bar, and at the very bottom just above the navbar - these aren't visible in the screen shots provided. Could you get your testers to get one of these areas in the next screenshot?
So - 3 issues really - no remember me option, duplicate login requetss on error and apparently no page numbers in 'new posts' ?
I'll do what I can to fix things, and add (IMHO) suitable feature requests - Thanks for the feedback!

tekguru

And feed back from my testers ref teh page numbers:
..... wrong end of the stick on the page numbers!
Just to be clear I'm talking about the pages of the actual posts being available as direct links from this page and not that the New Posts page itself has links to its subsequent pages.
Each post that has more than one page would usually offer the option of going directly to any one of those pages.
So the issue is NOT page numbers for the New Posts page itself.
Hope that is clear ?

07-27-2007, 10:46 PM
Ok - I get it now, your tester means the page numbers in the thread title....

Thanks Lee - I'll add a report bad post link in to the next release.
As for the display order, that can't be done on the fly - it's an option set in the user control panel on a user by user basis (although I think the default is set by the admin). It's unlikely that I will get around to revamping the usercp with options like that, but I'll keep it in mind if I do.

Cheers for adviseing that it is okay for use with 3.6.8 :)
Feedback from the guys is now looking very positive:
This is realy good!
Page numbers now showing Mostly and User CP much better.
And now to confirm, the Login page now works correctly!
Thanks to the developer for being so responsive.

Looking really good from here over wifi, layout fits well on my Hermes, page numbers show ok. Pages load quickly. Roger over and out!

Glad you like it! Feel free to click "Mark as Installed" ;)
As soon as this skin has no new suggestions/fixes etc for a week or two I'll mark it as no longer a Beta, and use it as a foundation for a skin aimed for more recent devices such as Windows Mobile devices, Blackberrys (and others as suggested) which uses drop downs, basic javascript etc...
So all feedback (positive and negative) is welcome in the mean time. If you've modified the CSS, feel free to upload if you want to share - the colour scheme has had more negative comments than anything else!

One thing I did find. When you are in showthread, the link which carries the name of the current forum actually links to the parent forum of that forum, if you see what I mean..
So in many cases it would take you back to the main index, not the forumdisplay.
So where it had $foruminfo[parentid] I've changed it to $foruminfo[forumid] and now that works fine.
The only addition I think think of at the moment is when you click on the "Rep" button it would be good if that included the quoted text from the post, otherwise you might as well just use the quick reply at the bottom.

PS. It also looks like there is no way to register by just using the mobile version?
dartho

I though it *did* include quoted text (at least it did somewhere along the line ina previous version.... anyway....)
I'll add the quoted text back in as well as fixing the $foruminfo[forumid] link.
Thanks!

I just tried to import this "out of the box" into 3.6.8 and it will not work. modifying the version information in the XML to 3.6.8 helps but there is still a database error on import. Sounds like upgrading is fine, but from scratch doesn't work properly.

Another comment from one of my guys when I advised where you were going with the theme. He is unaware of the style detector Mod:
hmmm, sounds ok except as long as we can choose which one to use as I'm quite happy as is for smartphone!
One improvement suggestion is to mirror the top of page links at the bottom of the page too, some pages are a long old scroll on a phone.

Can't we have moderator functions in the existing version? I don't have a blackberry or PDA but I do have a mobile phone.
For each thread there could just be a "Manage Thread" link which brings up a menu for the likes of 'Stick Thread', 'Close Thread', options for renaming etcetc. Wasn't so long ago in vb2 we did just fine thankyouverymuch without drop down menus etc.
It would be a shame to get the mobile version up to this point then stop development to produce a more bloated version :(

Some thoughts after using it for a few days..
It's difficult to keep track of latest posts. When forums have new posts they have a green background, my suggestion is to extend this into the forumdisplay, when a thread has new posts, it has a green background.
Additionally, for the posts themselves, the header bar with the username, that should have a green background when it's a new post.
Also it doesn't seem to jump to the latest post the way it does on the full version. I don't know if that's a limitation of the skin or my phone.
PS You can find my forums at http://m.motorsportforum.com/

I can extend the highlighting of new threads when they have new posts, but this doesn't *appear* to extend to being able to do the same with new posts with in a thread.
I think I have the jumping to the latest post sorted now too - as of the next re4lease, it should jump to the newest post, currently it jumps to the page of the newest post.
Thanks for the feedback - when I release (which may not be real soon), you'll get an update notification :up:

I've had a quick look and they turned out both to be pretty straightforward with just an addition of a template conditional, so I've implemented it on my board.
Here is the code, feel free to use it in an upcoming release

I was just wondering when I go to a specific forum from your wap template that I installed, can I make the threads not in bold but only the ones that have new posts in them to be bold?
If so can u plz help me out. Im a real beginner so I'll need it real simple. If I need a code to paste somewhere can u show me which one and where to paste it?
Not real sure - I don't do any bolding myself, however you could use the code by Mark above to highlight new posts differently...

I think this is the best wap theme I've ever seen. Its simple and easy to use. Love it and thank you so much. I do have a few suggestions thou. I think if you made the forums 2 or 3 spaces forward and kept the titles as they are it would seperate the title from the forums a lot. Here's what I mean
This is the title
--- This is the forum
--- This is another forum
This the title
--- This is another forum.
See what I mean? It would make the titles and the forums stand out a lot more which would make the whole browsing much easier.
And one more thing. As it was mentioned before about the new posts. If maybe you could keep the threads with no new posts regular font and the threads that do have new posts to be in bold. I think it would be the greatest thing ever.
Ow and ps. Is there a way to change the link color of the forums or threads? Cause when I'd try changing it in css it would not make any difference.
Thank you sir!

First, let me just say I love this theme. Our mobile users love it, except I've received a few complaints that they can't see any images that are inside posts. It's really not a big deal to me, but it seems to be annoying a few of my members since my last "mobile" theme allowed them to view posted images. Is there anything I can do to allow images to show up?
Thanks.
dartho
09-07-2007, 06:37 AM
@Soonerdude - They should see links to any images posted, but if you want the actual images to appear inline again just go into the Style Options and remove the following 3 tags from the Replacement Variables section at the bottom pf the page:
border="0" alt="" />
class="inlineimg" />

Could you log on from your laptop with FF and IE at the same time and use IE to check what UserAgent string your FF session is giving (check in Who's Online? and select to vioew user agent strings)
What happens in FF if you log out? DO you revert to the normal skin or stay on the mobile skin?

Thank you for the reply. Here are my useragent strings....
FF: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 6.0; en-US; rv:1.8.1.6) Gecko/20070725 Firefox/2.0.0.6

Sorry, got it working. It was my bad. When I added the mobile style I changed around the display ID's. Well, the template I was using was set to a specific one and I guess when I changed the order, it screwed up the ID mine was using.

New version uploaded - the only change from 2.07 is the removal of the "2.07 by TWF" link at the bottom of the FORUMHOME template. You are now free to remove this at no cost.
To those few that donated in order to remove this previously - let me know if you want a refund (it would be unfair that you paid for something which everyone now gets for free!)

I was going to do a new release for this small modification, but thought I'd post up the change and release when there is more to add later.
Anyone who allows users to choose their own styles may want to replace the "modifyoptions" (In the "Modify User Options Templates" section ) template with the following code. This will add the ability for users to change their style via the UserCP, Modify Options section of the mobi skin. It's drop downs which may not work on some older phones, but people on older phones probably won;t want to change the style away from teh mobi one anyway. This will NOT change the users skin if you are using either the "Mobile Device Style Assignment" or the DDDS add-on as these override the users/forums styles.

2) is there a way to have each username on the posts link to their profile? in order to send a pm, it looks like we have to manually type in the username.
Thanks

I should be able to do something with attachments - after a very quick look it seems that it will take a bit of tweaking to get it displaying right.
Consider it also added to the list...
Did I miss how to quote posts in this style?
Mark Hewitt

AFAIK you can't quote posts.
AFAIK you can't quote posts.
What about pictures, is there a way to see them?
@Soonerdude - They should see links to any images posted, but if you want the actual images to appear inline again just go into the Style Options and remove the following 3 tags from the Replacement Variables section at the bottom pf the page:
border="0" alt="" />
class="inlineimg" />
img src
Hmmm... Is this still true. I don't see any links to images.
dartho
10-26-2007, 03:03 AM
Quoting used to be automatic on all replies, at least under 3.5.x it was - it obvioulsy got broke along the way somewhere (possibly always under 3.6x)
The image links should work for inline images (not attached images) and remving those replacement variables *should* put images back in line as opposed to links.
I'm flat out with other things at the moment - sorry about the lack of updates. I'll try and have a quick test of the inline images tonight and look at the quoting too when I get an opportunity.

Thanks man, I use a earlier version as I do not like all the highlighting etc and have tweaked it just how I want it, can you put the changes in a txt file or email me the changes to show attachments so that I can just add them to the style that I have when you get to it?

You can turn off or modify all highlighting etc by editing the CSS file.

I've kept older versions here just in case someone doesn't like/want features added to later versions.
SO, download the latest one - "mobi vbulletin style 2.08.zip" unzip it. Uploads the wireless.css file to you forum root.
Install the style:
Go into your AdminCP, Styles and Templates, Download / Upload Styles.
In the "Import Style XML File" section, browse for the "mobi-vbulletin-style-2.08.xml" file you extracted from the zip. Sleect "yesy" to ignore style version (although I think it is currently set to 3.6.8) and then click on the "Import" button.
The style is now installed!
If you want to add mobile device detection so the style will automatically be applied to mobile devices, you will need to install THIS (https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showthread.php?t=130983) add-on.

All done .. crawling on ready.mobi now. Will take a few lol.
I was unsure of the styleID I was to put for each device. There were #s there already so I left them there. I hope those were correct. MObile was 2, PDA was 3 and IPOD was 4. Sound right?
dartho

You should have them all the same as you only have a single style to accomodate them all. If you go into AdminCP, Styles and Temapltes, Style Manager and then click on the "Go" button to teh right of the style name, the next screen should have a box at the top left with a heaidng of "Fonts / Colors etc.: stylename (id: xx)" where stylename is teh name of teh style, and xx is the styleid number you would use in the mobile device detection hack

Comments today from one of my users:
Hiya, been meaning to post this for awhile sorry! When im browsing the mobile version of the forum on my kaiser, there seems to be a problem with going back up. For example, i go into the Kaiser forum, then into a post to read it. If i then click on 'UP' it takes me right back to the top level of the forum, rather than up one level and back to the kaiser forum. Also the same happens if im in a post and i click on 'HTC Kaiser' at the top of the screen. Not a big issue, just a little annoying when im browsing on GPRS.

Having display problems on 3.7 test site when using an emulator.
Installed mobile detector and your light style in test site, which installed very easy, and thank you for a no-brainer installation.
Test site has Ultimate Side Columns for displaying some test ads, as well as test ads using 3.7 ad templates.
I don't use mobile devices so I couldn't check site myself; instead I used an emulator that makes test site look horrible, as you can see at this link (http://mtld.mobi/emulator.php?webaddress=punzhu.com%2Fvbtest%2Finde x.php&emulator=sonyK750&Submit=Submit)
I set everything to Yes in vBadmin options, Mobile Device Detection.
Any idea as to what I've done wrong to create this problem, other than problem possibly being the ad systems?

dartho
02-07-2008, 12:19 AM
I think you'll have to edit the CSS file and add a body section at the top to define font and background colours... untested.
eg.
body
{
background: #000000;
color: #ffffff;
font: 10pt verdana, geneva, lucida, 'lucida grande', arial, helvetica, sans-serif;
margin: 0px;
padding: 0px;

dartho
02-07-2008, 01:21 AM
Looks like you'll need to add some more CSS definitions - it may take a bit of tinkering to get it right.
Edit these sections of teh CSS:
.windowbg
{
background-color: #FFFFCC;
color: #000000;
size:1;
}
.newwindowbg
{
background-color: #99FF66;
color: #000000;
size:1;
}
.windowbg2, .thread
{
background-color: #99CCCC;
color: #000000;
size:1;
}
and change to
.windowbg, .windowbg a, .windowbg a:link, .windowbg a:visited
{
background-color: #FFFFCC;
color: #000000;
size:1;
}
.newwindowbg, .newwindowbg a, .newwindowbg a:link, .newwindowbg a:visited
{
background-color: #99FF66;
color: #000000;
size:1;
}
.windowbg2, .thread, .windowbg2 a, .windowbg2 a:link, .windowbg2 a:visited
{
background-color: #99CCCC;
color: #000000;
size:1;
}
and then change the color to what you want and that may be enough.
Sorry it's so messy. It started off simple and got added onto many times when really I should have started again. One day (yeah right) I'll have time to tidy it all up!
If you view this style on a PC - you can view the source and look for the class definitions and see which bits of the CSS file you need to clean up.
Keep the questions coming if you have more, it will help others too!

It's designed to be used in conjunction with THIS (https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showthread.php?t=130983) hack which autodetects a mobile device and assignes the style accordingly. Alternatively THIS (https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showthread.php?t=151514) hack will allow you to assign a style to a (sub)domain so you could say have "wap.domainname.com" for mobile browsers.
Otherwise, if you look back through this thread you will see some modifications people have made to add a link back to your main style.
Chadi - I've not encountered your problem before, although having a quick look at the CSS I can see how this would happen.
If you edit the wireless.css file and add the following code to teh top it will allow you to set a text size which teh rest will be relative to:
body
{
background: #000000;
color: #ffffff;
font: 10pt verdana, geneva, lucida, 'lucida grande', arial, helvetica, sans-serif;
margin: 0px;
padding: 0px;
}
Change the "font: 10pt" to a size thats suits your device
I did all the work on this when I was on holiday and haven;t had the time to update much since. I'm looking at re-doing it from the ground up for VB3.7 - time will tell whether I manage to do this or not!

Any ideas on how one could incorporate ads from Google Adsense for Mobile?
EDIT: NM, figured it out.
To do it, create a php page say "googlead.php" and insert the php code from Google Adsense. Then load it to your server. Next create a plug-in for vbulletin with hook location at 'global_start' with this code:
ob_start();
include('/path/to/file/googlead.php');
$mobileads = ob_get_contents();
ob_end_clean();
Then insert
$mobileads
into the header template, or wherever you want the ad to appear.
dartho

Thanks for this.
I'd guess you could put the contents of the '/path/to/file/googlead.php' file in place of the include('/path/to/file/googlead.php'); line, but by using an include you reduce memory overheads.

If you take a look here (http://www.myjeeprocks.com/forums/showthread.php?t=10477&styleid=24) at the thread display and want to go back to the thread list via the forum link at the top, (in this case it's "Your Rockin' Jeep"), clicking it takes you back one level too far I think. This isn't a plugin or product, it's a style. To install you need to expand "Styles and Templates", then go into the "Download / Upload Styles" option.
Then in the "Import Style XML File" section, browse for the XML file, Click the "Yes" radio button for "Ignore Style Version" and then click on the "Import" Button...
This style is best used in conjunction with the Mobile Device Style Assignment (https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showthread.php?t=130983) or Different Domain Different Style (https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showthread.php?t=151514) addon

@Voter: That's a limitation of the emulator and is unlikely to actually affect your site but I will look at limiting topics/page. It may have to be hard coded into the style

I wouldn;t be too concerned with the http://ready.mobi ratings - simply changing your DOC TYPE can take you up 2 full points!
This style has been tested by many people on many devices and seems to do its job well. If you actually have a mobi domain name and require compliance, let me know - I think the tweaks are in this thread somewhere on how to get a 5/5 on ready.mobi
I did it already.
with Doctype
<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//WAPFORUM//DTD XHTML Mobile 1.0//EN" "http://www.wapforum.org/DTD/xhtml-mobile10.dtd" >
I made ready.mobil "very happy" but my pages still stay to huge as of unicode characters of Armenian represented in HTML code with 7 symbols like & # 1 3 7 7 ; per one letter ա, so on some pages it needs 7 times more Bytes.
dartho

ready.mobi is obviously not Armenian friendly :) A global TLD such as mobi should take such factors into account when designing systems such as ready.mobi
So long as your members are happy!

03-14-2008, 09:45 PM
Sure can....
In postbit_legacy search for
<div class="windowbg">$post[message]
Replace with
<div class="windowbg">$post[message]<br />
<!-- attachments -->
<if condition="$show['attachments']">
<div><span>Attached: </span>
<if condition="$show['thumbnailattachment']">
<span>$post[thumbnailattachments]</span>
</if>
<if condition="$show['imageattachment']">
<span>$post[imageattachments]</span>
</if>
<if condition="$show['imageattachmentlink']">
<span>$post[imageattachmentlinks]</span>
</if>
<if condition="$show['otherattachment']">
<span>$post[otherattachments]</span>
</if>
<if condition="$show['moderatedattachment']">
<span>$post[moderatedattachments]</span>
</if>
</div>
<!-- / attachments -->
</if>
Copy entire contents of postbit_legacy and overwrite postbit template with it
Replace the following templates with the contents of the code box below thier names
postbit_attachment
<a href="attachment.php?$session[sessionurl]attachmentid=$attachment[attachmentid]&d=$attachment[dateline]"<if condition="$show['newwindow']"> target="_blank"</if>>$attachment[filename]</a>
postbit_attachmentimage
<a href="attachment.php?$session[sessionurl]attachmentid=$attachment[attachmentid]&d=$attachment[dateline]" target="_blank">$attachment[filename]</a>
postbit_attachmentmoderated
<if condition="$show['modattachmentlink']">
<a href="attachment.php?$session[sessionurl]attachmentid=$attachment[attachmentid]&d=$attachment[dateline]"<if condition="$show['newwindow']"> target="_blank"</if>>$attachment[filename]</a> ($attachment[filesize])<else />$attachment[filename]
</if>
postbit_attachmentthumbnail
<a href="attachment.php?$session[sessionurl]attachmentid=$attachment[attachmentid]&d=$attachment[dateline]" target="_blank">$attachment[filename]</a>
Click "Mark as Installed"...
One of these days I will get around to rolling all these small enhancements up into a new version - really....

That all looks OK.
Looking at MSN etc , they use a 16x16 image. It could be that Windows Mobile will only use if its this size?

I've just knocked up and uploaded a new css file called "alt-vb-wireless.css.txt" - save it and rename to wireless.css and then upload to you forum root (rename your existing one out of the way first). It's uses similar colours to vBulletin default style.
If you have a CSS file you would like to share with others, please let me know and I'll upload them here also.
@Codershark - that happens as this was developed under 3.6 and the vB version number is included in the XML. I'll do a release for 3.7 soon, but it may not include much (if any) support for Blogs, Photos, Social Groups, Tags and other such features.

3.7 RC1 won't accept 2.08 for same reason. I'll just have to wait to install.

Doesn't support prefixes in 3.7, but you can quickly change the following to make it work :)
Open template under "new posting templates >>" newthread
Find
$vbphrase[title]:<br />
<input type="text" class="bginput" name="subject" value="$subject" size="20" maxlength="85" style="width:100%"/><br />
Replace with
<if condition="$prefix_options">
$vbphrase[prefix]:<br />
<select name="prefixid" class="bginput">
<option value="">$vbphrase[no_prefix_meta]</option>
$prefix_options
</select><br />
$vbphrase[title]:<br />
<input type="text" class="bginput" name="subject" value="$subject" size="20" maxlength="85" style="width:100%"/><br />
<else />
$vbphrase[title]:<br />
<input type="text" class="bginput" name="subject" value="$subject" size="20" maxlength="85" style="width:100%"/><br />
</if>
Open template under "Threadbit templates >>" threadbit
Find
<div class="sticky">Sticky:
Replace with:
<div class="sticky">
$thread[movedprefix]
$thread[typeprefix]
$thread[moderatedprefix]
$thread[prefix_rich]
then
Find
<div class="thread$thread[statusicon]">
Add Below
$thread[movedprefix]
$thread[typeprefix]
$thread[moderatedprefix]
$thread[prefix_rich]
And then you're done and prefixes are enabled. I haven't included searching for prefixes as searching isn't really included in this style anyway...

My only complaint is when you're reading a busy thread and people are quoting often, it's hard to follow the thread. I would suggest a little more spacing between posts or coming up with a way to show a definte beginning and end of a users post.
When it goes
-username-
-quote-
textext[reply]
-username-
-quote-
textext[reply]
over and over it's tough to read the flow of the conversation. Espically when there is no space between the end of the text and the next line that says the next poster's username.
Need to maybe space things out a little more.

anyone made the leap to 3.7 willing to do some testing for me ? No real changes, but needs testing in a live site. minimal tag/groups support added in addition to prefixes as provided by mr toasty.
@punch - Shouldn't be too hard to edit you postbit template to add a bit more padding
MrToasty

I have it running on 3.7 and can test a bit if needed? Currently I have it running as you had it with no links to any 3.7 features, but with the prefixes code installed.

Is there any way to add "Posted using a mobile device" or something to that tune when a post or thread is created using this style?
dartho
03-27-2008, 08:47 PM
This is a bit of a kludge, but will allow your users to choose to remove the Posted via Mobile Message - I will look into a plugin to force the addition of the message also, but in the mean time:
Edit your "newreply" and "newthread" templates for this style and replace:
<textarea name="message" rows="10" cols="15" style="width:100%; height:100px"></textarea>
with:
<textarea name="message" rows="10" cols="15" style="width:100%; height:100px">

It looks like some of your templates may be original vbulletin templates rather than the ones form this style - USERCP_SHELL in particular. Try installing the style again with a new name (so you can keep the original and teh fresh install) and no parent and see how that goes..

I have to rename the file or only put other name for the template when I am uploading it ?

The screen for importing new styles has an option for giving the style a new name :up:

just a thing, when people post from a mobile device (that`s already been detected and using mobile style), this user signature do not apears, even when you see the post in a computer. Can it be fixed?
dartho
03-30-2008, 11:57 PM
I had left this out to conserve screen space, but you can add in signatures by editing your postbit (and postbit_legacy) templates, searching for
<if condition="$post['editlink']"><a href="$post[editlink]">[Ed]</a></if>
and replace with
<if condition="$post['signature']">
<!-- sig -->
<div>
__________________<br />
$post[signature]
</div>
<!-- / sig -->
</if>
<if condition="$post['editlink']"><a href="$post[editlink]">[Ed]</a></if>

I tried the above and had no luck with it. I would like it to just show the Posted via mobile device only for users that make a post with this style. Also the images are not showin gup inline. The ones that have been attached via vbulletin. Post that have links to off site images show up fine.
Great job on this working great on vb 3.7 beta 6 and with vBSEO

G'day Mac, a 3.7 version of this can be found here: https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showthread.php?t=174375 with a new colour scheme too.
Images were designed not to show up inline, but you should get a link to them instead. There is info on how to put images back inline in this post: https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showthread.php?p=1334072&highlight=inline#post1334072

You'll need to manually edit say the footer template and insert a link to your default style - say after the Online link?
<a href="/index.php?styleid=xx">Full Version</a> where xx is the styleid of your default style
@Racejunkie - are you importing the style with no parent as a new style?
@edch - not sure - do you have a login button showing? This is teh only report I have of this being an issue. Sorry - I know nothing about sprint or Katanas...
