what is a good FREE html / text editor?
One that is supported by an FTP editor...

Something thats not Microsoft word, It was made to edit html / php...

GEdit.
It's a basic text editor, but it recognises (X)HTML quite well.

Notepad is good and free :). You could also search Google for more, there are plenty of reviews.
