View Full Version : 1&1: Horrible as always

I have a few domains that I bought ages ago, and 1&1 is the registrar. I've been on the phone for almost an hour now just trying to get them to unlock the domains that I own so that I can transfer the registrar to (quite frankly) a company that doesn't suck.
If you're transferring registrars, you need two things. One, the domain unlocked, and two, the EPP code to auth the transfer. I'm on the phone with the tech support line right now, and here are some snippets:
Me: "When can I expect my domains to be unlocked?"
Them: "I don't know, just check them now and then."
Me: "How about the unlock code?"
Them: "Yes, I don't think so."
Me: "What?" (baffled)
Them: "Um. Yes."
Me: "I just want to transfer registrars. Unlock my domains."
Them: "We are not authorized to do that."
Me: "..."
Them: "You need to talk to our billing department."
Me: "They're my domains. You were my host two years ago, I left because the service was horrible. You aren't providing me with any service, why would I need to pay for anything? Just unlock my domains. They aren't even active.
Them: "Yes, thank you."
Me: "Thank you?"
Them: "No problem, is there anything else?"
Me: "What the #@!$#@?"
And now off I go to call the billing department for a company that I don't even use.
1&1: Worst. Host. Ever. I dropped my root server with them two years ago and have never, ever recommended them to anyone. Ugh.

I currently use 1&1 for hosting, and Ive never had a problem with them myself. I must be lucky, I guess...
Sorry you had to go through such a horror story though :(

Good luck bro. It took me weeks to get them to release my domains to transfer.
PowerVPS did everything they could to support me, but 1and1's service was just horrible.

I also use 1&1 and never have any issues with them. Their customer support is always helpful and the tech support rocks. The one gripe I have is their cpanel sucks but other than that. I love them. Oh yeah the server load can be high at times but the pages still load very fast.
Sorry to hear your having such an issue with them. I would immediately ask to speak to a supervisor instead of some college student reading from a text........

I agree they suck, I still want to get off them but can't since I don't want to go through the 1year long procedure

Have you ever had an actual technical problem with them? Club3G and I used to share a Root Server, it was an experience akin to lighting my eyebrows on fire. I got three responses to my last request. One saying "Your account was deleted, have a nice day!", another saying "You need to call the UK support line, we don't deal with that", and another saying "We'll look into it". 3 completely different responses, all within 5 minutes of each other.
Edit: If the forum in your profile is the site you have hosted with them, you shoudl get it off there now. You have under 500 posts man. Once you start to get some traffic, you'll understand.

why are you even talking to someone.... it's a completely automated process.

Have you ever had an actual technical problem with them? Yes, and they fixed it.
Another time I requested a drive to be changed and accidently quoted the wrong server - after the change I obviously realised my mistake and contacted them again - they restored the old drive within an hour.
Their support can be a bit slow at times (if you use e-mail to contact them) but we're quite happy with the root servers we use, and all past problems have been sorted. No real complaints about them.

Aren't you on their dedicated program?

4 days now and my domains still aren't transferrable. I don't owe a balance, I don't have any business with them otherwise. They sent me my unlock codes, but my domains are locked in the control panel.
...Which, of course, I don't have, because my account with them "has been deleted" (their words). So tech support's response to me:
Me: "I don't have a control panel logon that does anything. Just unlock my domains please, because I can't - I don't have an account with you."
Them: "Hello. You need to unlock your domains in the control panel".
Me: "I don't have a control panel that does anything. If there's some other panel, please give me a link and login. Otherwise, just unlock my domains."
Them: "Hello, your account has been deleted so there is no control panel associated with your account."
Me: "...I know. Just unlock my domains."
Them: "You need to login to the control panel to unlock your domains."
And round and round we go.
why are you even talking to someone.... it's a completely automated process.
No, it's not, when the current registrar has the domains locked and untransferrable. They need to unlock them, and then provide an unlock key for the new registrar to be allowed to process the transfer.

The dedicated Root Server 3 that Club3G and I had with them was great, but that was ~4 years ago or so before they apparently outsourced all of their tech support to people who don't even really speak English. After awhile, having someone say "Thank you for providing that information to me sir" 19 times in 5 minutes gets a bit infuriating.
