View Full Version : Contact List for PM

I'm looking for a mod that will allow users to create 'groups' of contacts (other site members), and then be able to PM them using the group - much like Distribution Lists in Outlook.

Anything like that around?

Shameless bump ;)

I suppose what I'm looking for is more of a Distribution List type of thing.

Member creates a named 'group' of members, and then they are able to type in that name in the To for a PM. Obviously already-taken names would be prohibited for use as a group name.

Ideally it would parse out the group name and list out all of the member names, possibly with a check box next to each to include/exclude users, if someone wanted to do a one-time edit of the list.

Even more ideally, a message would be displayed if they are attempting to send a PM to more people than they are allowed (per Usergroup).

I, too, would like this so that users could create a contact list up containing up to the max # of users they can send a PM to. Ideally for me, users could have an unlimited number of distribution lists that would be in a dropdown beside the "TO:" box. When they selected the distribution list, it would then put the usernames in the TO box. However, Elenna's suggested functionalities would work fine for me.

Please respond if something like this exists! Thanks!

But how would this interact with the max number of PM recipients - most forums leave it at the default of 5.

I allow my admins / supermods to have a fairly large # (i.e. 50). However, most send only a max of about 10 or so at one time and only then when other mods/admins are copied. What I envision is that the # that could be in a distribution list is limited to the max # allowed for the group.

Yep, that would work too... where they would get an error message, or not be allowed to add more to the list. It could use the same procedure when checking to send message to more than the allowed number of people, but (unfortunately) it doesn't warn the person until they try and send or preview the message... but that might be a good start?

Our members would LOVE to have distribution lists. We have several 'clubs' going on, so it would be sooooo nice to have the ability to make custom PM lists for each club to make communication easier.

A nice idea to not to ignore.

Curious if anyone thinks this idea might be worth looking in to?

I don't suppose anyone has an Xmas present for me, with this request all done up with a bow? :)

Maybe vB 3.7 has already what you want out of the box.

Check the Quick Links > Open Contacts Popup in the navbar. ;)

Oooooooh! Thanks so much! Was waiting to upgrade to 3.7 until it is our of RC status, but this makes it ooooh so tempting.

I installed 3.7 on my test database. I do see the contact list pop-up, but nothing to create custom named "groups", like Outlook's Distribution List. Am I missing something?

It is.

Hmmm my 3.6.8 has "Open Buddy List" in Quick Links and shows the same screen as the 3.7 Contact list.

You are correct, forgot about the Buddy List in 3.6.x.

Bringing this back to the top because my moderators asked for it again.

I like the Quick Links > Open Contacts as a workaround, but would MUCH prefer if members could create a personalized group without adding them as contacts/friends/buddies.

Thanks again.
