When attempting to do an installation/upgrade, I was horrified to discover that vBulletin requires php 4.3.3 or greater. My version is 4.3.2. I suspect that my MySQL is incompaitable too.

The message:

vBulletin 3.6.7 requires PHP version 4.3.3 or greater. Your PHP is version 4.3.2, please ask your host to upgrade.

I own my own server but when it comes to upgrading php and mysql I am a newbie, so am likely to get someone to do it for me. However before I proceed with this I'd like to know whether upgrading will cause any disturbances with existing websites hosted on the machine? Thanks.

No, if an experienced person does it well, it will not affect any existing websites.
