version 1.05 updated

Ok heres a scenario someone likes your thread and they are a digg member. They decide to digg it, 4 mins later your digged page is on diggs upcoming page and someone decides to click it. Your forum will see that the visitor is coming from digg.com and trying to access thread X, what will happen next is your forum will use diggs API to check if the thread URL is dugg if it is it will record the DIGG url and add it to your thread. Now if a thread has a digg url then the process wont be repeated.

Hope you like it, i spent some time on it :D

Downloaded and installed product. Works Great.

Maybe the traffic on this product is not high as it is a major holiday long weekend in the U.S. Indy 500, Nascar CC600, sunny weather, parties and stuff.

Post the update.

whats next in 1.06 ?
ability to change digg background through acp
user digg count (when the digg automation system picks up a digg it will give the thread poster 1 digg point or what ever. Goal is an incentive to digg your threads = more traffic)

Is there an option so that you can only Digg posts that are visible to guests?
I can see it being a problem if people Digg posts that are only visible when logged in.

Coders Shack

well ill add that to 1.06 if you want. Has no use for me but it may for others.

A digg to a login-only would prolly get you a member.

ok i have decided to give a disable forums option as for the guest feature you can just disable that forum.

lol it was tricky, because i already have soo many if statements. Look at the 1.06 Template Edits plugin lol.

the product is just getting larger lol, started at 3kb and is now almost 9kb

I have a custom skin that changes the look of postbit_legacy. When I enable DiggTopic, the Diggs count for the users doesn't look great. (See attached screenshot).

What would I need to edit to get it to display like my Location and Posts boxes in the postbit?

Congratulations on all the updates so quickly. Much appreciated.

I seem to have a problem with the postbit bg colour, or maybe it's my understanding of a postbit.

I changed the bg colour for the postbit in the admincp but the "Digg this story" button background stayed the same. I tried several different bg colours and the button background didn't change.

Granted, I'm an impatient fellow and immediately went to forum page and refreshed it to see if bg had changed.

I simply wanted the "Digg this story" button bg to stand out a tad more in both IE and Firefox.

Does the postbit bg line in admincp change the bg on the "Digg this story" button?

install the new one its better, automatically adds the digg url.

Well that answers my question. From the current description in the OP, the process sounded manual.

Now that it's automatic, I'm digging your digg! :D

Clicks install.

the postbit bg only apply's after the story has been dugg, if you would like to be able to change the digg image i may be ables to do something.

you forum needs to update the count, it isn't instant.

see digg.com takes time to register you url as dugg, even though you see your story. Also the digg count only changes when your topic gets automatically dugg, so the manually adding the digg url will avoid adding a digg to your account.

hmm, i really want to avoid template changes. I guess i can add a option in the ACP like postbit diggs CLASS or somthing the reason why it shows up like that is because the <div has a custom class.

Well, it might look better if it were added under the Instant Messaging icons, and maybe with a space in front of Diggs, so that is a little better aligned. Just a thought.

Good work so far.

If I wanted to play with the code, can you tell me what DiggTopic code I'd need to manually insert into the Postbit_legacy template? I can play around with it manually to see if I can come up with some better placement.

But I agree with you - I was attracted to your Mod specifically because of no template changes required. ;)

lol dont bother messing with the plugin code its very complex.

i might create postbit template hooks, like:

<!-- diggTopic_digg -->
<!-- diggTopic_usercount -->

for custom positioning.

That would be awesome. Much like some of the other mods out there (Billspaypal comes to mind). Most of the automatically placed things don't work for my custom skin, so it's nice to be able to manually place some code-bits where I need them.

oh no problem, only thing i can think of adding now is a option to swich between the compact digg and the normal:

example: http://digg.com/img/integrate-example.png

when using the normal one you would have to use a custom placement for it because its too large.

Okay, I wish I was more experienced (just got my board converted to vB recently, so I'm still learning it...)

At any rate, I'm still working on getting the css / postbit editing just right, but one thing I noticed is there is no option to turn OFF the auto-addition of the Digg count.. In otherwords, I can manually add mine, but if the Mod is enabled, it ALSO shows yours...

if <!-- diggTopic_userdiggcount --> is in the postbit template it will not use the old template replacement.

Oh - okay - I thought if I disabled that, then it wouldn't count them at all. But are you saying it just won't display them? And as long as I manually add that code somewhere, then it will show their counts?

Also - how does that codebit work - I thought <!-- was for comments and nothing after it does anything? (Told you I'm a newbie).

ok just add this under your post count div:
<div class="postdata">
Diggs: <!-- diggTopic_userdiggcount -->
</div>
and leave it on.

also I'm just using the <!-- --> as a marker, when the template is processed it looks for <!-- diggTopic_userdiggcount --> and replaces it with the code.

Okay - something else isn't working quite right. I can't find where I can see the Digg URL. Even when I edit the thread, I don't get the manual box or an auto-populated one like you show in your screenshots.

And a feature request: Anyway we can show that it's been Dugg? Like change the button or something? Or show the number of diggs?

Nothing changed on my dugg thread, but when I tried to digg it again, it DID link up appropriately and say "Cool, this story has already been dugg" and then it displayed it at Digg.com. Very cool.

Hi, this looks great - I installed without problem but it only displays the "Digg This Story" button. It dosn't show a digg count, or even realise if the story has already been dugg.

Also I have a suggestion - if you add "&name=" to the query string of the digg submit URL you can automatically add the thread title to the digg submit. Speed the submission up a bit.

Thanks,

James

vBulletin Options -> vBulletin Options -> diggTopic Settings

and for the people that cant get the autoadd to work please disable these two settings:
1) Show Users Diggs
2) Enable autoadd?

This will leave you with the manual url add. During the week i have little time to support my mods.

dammit, the only way i can test this is on my server, and i got it to work with all my forums.

so the only way i can fix it for other people is if they can give me access to their crap, unless they can fix it themselves and release the fix.

Okay, it's still not working quite right for me.

I can digg a story okay, but (a) it doesn't give that user a digg point, and (b) it doesn't show that it's been dug. But when you try to digg it again, it DOES link up with digg and say "Cool - it's already been dugg."

And here's the link to the thread that is not getting a "digg this thread" button (but the others are):

Its working fine on my site.. only small annoying detail i noticed is that the "digg this story" button seems to change sometimes.
Sometimes its a button, sometimes just text or sometimes just another button "digg it".

Since its an externally hosted part, it might be something to do with the diggit site itself..

No big problem though... just weird

you can make your own image, just make sure its the same size as the digg this story one. And just add the url to the image in the ACP options. Not sure what you mean by it being just text, but when its digg it that means that the story has already been dugg.

Also I have a suggestion - if you add "&name=" to the query string of the digg submit URL you can automatically add the thread title to the digg submit. Speed the submission up a bit.

Has ^^ this suggestion been added yet?

And here's the link to the thread that is not getting a "digg this thread" button (but the others are):

I also get this error - but only on some threads. When the error appears, no Digg button is displayed. If the page (thread) loads without an error, I get the digg button displayed.

I would conclude from this that there is an error processing the code to display the digg button.

This occurs even with the default vBulletin style.

I would conclude from this that there is an error processing the code to display the digg button.

The error is

Expected: ')'

This is the line generating the error (from View Source):

document.write('<A HREF="http://digg.com/submit?phase=2&url=' + location.href +'&title=Deadly twist at the chiropractor's office"><img src="./images/100x20-digg-button.gif" width="100" height="20" alt="Digg!" border="0"/></a>');

and as you can see the title= part contains an apostrophe:

'&title=Deadly twist at the chiropractor's office

I don't know if this is characteristic of other threads that don't display the button but this should be handled with a "replace" to add a \ before the apostrophe. It's basically a parsing problem.

Alternatively, leave out the thread title from the URL but have the URL open in a new window so that the individual can cut-and-paste into the Digg window from the forum. I would actually prefer this solution for several reasons.

Is it possible to add an "Include" list in addition to the "Exclude" list? I only want this on a few forums and that means typing out a huge list of forums to Exclude.

I thought maybe I could just wrap a conditional around the <!-- diggTopic_diggit --> code in the postbit, but I haven't tried that and I'm not positive it would work.

If you change the url of the digg button, it's going to keep the size of the original button, so your new button will look differently, I recommend you remove the width and height attributes in the button you have used, or put size options for admin control panel.

And This is a good product, thanks for making it

Hello CS,

This looks to be a nice feature and I am trying very hard to add it to my site, however I have run into a lot of problems getting the product to work.

Pretty strange problem, actually - because it 'appears' to be working - that is when I view the source code. However, the page never displays the digg button. This appears to be a javascript error.

Below is the code snipped that is generating the js error. The error is "expected ')' " however, I'm not certain where or how I correct this.

<div style="margin-top: 10px" align="right"><div style="float: left;"> <script type="text/javascript">
document.write('<A onclick="urchinTracker ('/outgoing/http_digg_com_submit_phase_2_url_');" HREF="http://digg.com/submit?phase=2&url=' + location.href +'&title=WARNING: Blackwater to take over War On Drugs"><img src="http://digg.com/img/badges/100x20-digg-button.gif" alt="Digg!" border="0"/></a>');
</script> </div> </div>

example page: http://www.marijuana.com/drug-war-headline-news/80557-warning-blackwater-take-over-war-drugs.html

I would appreciate any assistance.

Thank you

Ok, I now see that the problem has to do with vBSEO and tracking of outside links using Google Analytics. I have disabled the tracking of outside links temporarily and the product now shows as expected.

I will need the ability to use vBSEO to track outside links - is this something that can be accommodated in the product? I dont know a thing about JS, but it appears to be a problem with escaping of characters, or that is my best guess.

Thanks

maximux1
09-28-2007, 04:45 PM
I can confirm that the apostrophe problem still exists in version 1.08. This problem is compounded if you are using vBSEO & Tracking of external links using Google Analytics.

One thing I would like to be able to better understand is how the user digg count is 'supposed' to work. It's hard to tell if it is working correctly as the count does not appear to increase after a digg. Is there a cron setting that should be updated or run?

On a side note. This product should be extremely useful for any forum, however - the documentation is a bit lacking, or did I miss it? I loved the simplicity of no templates edits, etc, however I do think that as the product continues to evolve that an updated readme would be extremely helpful. This thread goes through six different versions with little organization.

It appears that most of the problems folks are having here are mostly related to vBSEO and the apostrophe problem. A two line readme could save hours time for others.

Thank you for this product.

Works for me, but the threads stay "Digg This" even after 5-6 Diggs. Shouldn't the thread update with the amount of Diggs?

I am wondering about this too :)

I thought it should change, but I don't see it.

Also something a bit weird going on

I dugg this story - just trying out the system: http://www.nettrafficchat.com/showthread.php?t=2839

and when you go to digg and click on the link to go back to my site (from digg) - it's the same link, but it's going to a blank page??? Pretty strange!

Any ideas? Oh, and yeah, I am a bit of a noobie so please be kind :)

The apostrophe bug hits you whether it's in the title or description. Actually, anywhere in the digg xml data that gets returned. However, I have a fix for that.

Go to your AdminCP --> Plugins Manager
Find the "diggTopic - Autoadd" plugin and Edit it
Find the following code:

$digg_url = preg_match_between(' href="','" ', $digg_xml);

Add the following code below it:

$digg_url = addslashes($digg_url);

Finally, Save your changes.

This will escape unsafe characters for the database update. I don't know if there are other similar errors from the other plugins, but I imagine the fix would be similar. This fixed my digg referral links (links referred to my site from digg.com were generating SQL errors) caused by an apostrophe in the subject line of my digg submission. Your mileage may vary.

Perhaps the author will include this fix in the next update? *hint hint* :)

1 last thing, what is the most efficient way to make this mod really get more traffic in the long run. I don't want to keep submitting tons and tons of links to digg myself, is it better if other digg members do it for me in the forums over time? Thankyou. My board were down for awhile and not alot of active members...
