Ensure you address all duplicate content issues with a robot.txt, so the bots don't pick the wrong one over the right. Then make the forum the best there is on the subject. That way you will get other sites linking to you without spamming others for links. Also, don't be scared to link out to other sites that of use to your site visitors. They will find these sites anyway, so you might as well be the resource they use to do so.

The big 3 (Google, Yahoo and MSN) rarely have issues with crawling the non-archived pages so block those 3 from the archives.

Above all, I would steer well clear of any so called out-the-box SEO software. 99.9% of this software profits ONLY those selling it and often does more harm than good. There is NO magic pill and ranking well in SE entails dedication, time and a good understanding of the SE guidlines, particulaly Googles (http://www.google.com/support/webmasters/)
