View Full Version : Administrative and Maintenance Tools - Web Proxy Redirector [BETA]

Pages : [1] 2

isosdcftp

Current Version is in BETA

What is it?
This hack was designed to prevent users from using a web based proxy such as http://www.dontfilter.us/ to circumvent a IP address ban. It uses javascript to determine if the current domain matches the forum's domain. If it does not match, then it redirects the user to the website of your choosing. If the proxy strips the javascript code, then the forum will not be visible to the user, and a error message will be shown.

Effectiveness
This has been tested and has blocked at least 90% of all web proxies. Best of all, this hack requires no template hacks. The hack is completely self-contained in the product file.
Phrases are used for the informational messages.

Instructions
Instructions are included in the zip file.

Demonstration
For a demonstration, you may attempt to visit my forum http://www.isosdcftp.com through a web proxy such as http://www.dontfilter.us/.

Uninstalled because there are no real Options at AdminCP.

I have nearly 20 Domains my Board is hosted on - to much work to enter everyone directly at the Plugin-Code.

Waiting for a Update with Linkback at Productmanager at AdminCP to vb.org and a real useable Menu.

AOL users always use a proxy does this effect them?

Luky
05-15-2007, 11:41 AM
No, it shouldnt as AOL users use a browser that is in their browser or something like that, this mod checks the url for stuff like http://www.thisisaproxy.com/proxy.php?http://www.yourforums.com/register.php
(http://www.thisisaproxy.com/proxy.php?http://www.yourforums.com/register.php)

Hi, I tried your demo, it said no proxies allowed then redirected me to your site, was it meant to do that lol?

Yes, that is the purpose of this plugin. It detects if the user is using a proxy, and if so it redirects then to the site of your choosing. In this case my url.

It lets Xroxy.com go through to your site just tried it lol. But regardless going to install I like it and I worry about individuals registering under proxies.

It seams as if xroxy.com uses a sophisticated javascript parser. This will be fixed in the next update.

A update is under development, and will address all of your complaints :)

I love you. Such a brilliant thinker! To bad if the person is viewing the forums in an iFrame, but eh, the chances are small :)
Thanks :o lol

AOL users always use a proxy does this effect them?
No, this only affects users that use web based proxies. This does not affect users such as AOL users that use traditional port based proxies.

isosdcftp, I have three words for you. I love you! :D I've been waiting for a proxy hack such as this one and it's finally here. Thank you, thank you very much!

Just a couple of suggestions here. I was wondering if you could add a couple of features to the hack such as "Web Proxy Ban", you know. So the hack can do one of the other; either ban proxies or redirect them to the original URL address. I think that would be great.

Mrdby

I've disabled Javascript on my browser and have gotten this error (Just like if I was using proxies):
Sorry, you must have javascript enabled to view this site. That's kind of a bummer. It blocks EVERYONE who has Javascript disabled, regardless of proxies or not.

One would expect people to have JavaScript running considering most sites use it. Not having it active would be a crap browsing experience.
Good work Iso can't wait to see what the update brings.

LOL well I guess thats your confirmation that it is working correctly. Dont forget you have to enter a page to redirect the users too or you'll get a blank page. Next release will have this option in the Admin Cp.

This hack works so well Even some of the advanced members are having troubles getting around it...

Are you sure that is caused by this product? Reason I am asking is because the product does not call 'print_portal_output()' anywhere in the code.

the product XML has nothing in the settings group...the plugin was reconfigured to work with settings that you can't enter cause the fields aren't there.\

In other words...the half of this mod that lets you configure it isn't in the package atm, he probably forgot to add it in is all :)

isosdcftp
05-18-2007, 02:24 AM
No, this has a automatic detector that detects if your site is being viewed through a web proxy. If so, the user is redirected to the url of your choosing. So there is no need to manually add the proxies.

Yup, I think you're right puerto. BTW, small world huh? Nice to see you here :P

It was working fine on my board. I figured it worked fine on my board, so it'll work fine in others...Bad guess lol

I will revert the javascript code to the earlier version with the new obfuscation technique to fool javascript parsers. I will release it as version 1.2.1 so that people who already have it installed will be notified.

I figured writeln together with html editing techniques would be more compatible than what was used in version 1.0. And to a point that was true, because the proxy redirection technique worked on my windows CE cell phone. But I never figured the javascript variable scope would come into play in different browsers. Sorry for causing such a ruckus :o

If anyone needs any help with this let me know, I will gladly guide them and/or do it for them.

I apologize. I know that it's been a bumpy road.
Reason I did not set this to beta is because it was working fine on my board, and I had thoroughly tested it before releasing it.
I have learned the hard way just how much vbulletin boards vary. I am fairly certain that this version is stable, since I have uninstalled and reinstalled it on my board 3 times already.

I have a new found respect for vbulletin developers. I cannot begin to fathom just how many varying configurations they have to program for.

Tulsa

I wouldn't sweat that beta thing to much myself. It's really rare that you can d/l a mod that isn't going to need a tweak or two here and there. Your giving of your time and energy for free and I'm sure, others like myself appreciate that effort to help enhance our sites features.

It is possible to log proxy users instead of redirecting. I'll add that to the todo list ;)
As for the non-javascript users, unfortunately I can't see anyway to log them, but I can allow them access to the 'contact us' page, or even specified forums. You think that'll work?

AWESOME! Thanks for all your help (and patience) lol

Well, finally, release 1.2.2 allowed me to see a settings panel in vBulletin Options:)

I may need to ask a stupid question here...
When asked to include any domains that my forums are hosted on, and separate them with the 'pipe' character...
What is the pipe character?

edit:
I tried with the letter 'l', but that didn;t seems to work, as I couldn't get back to my forums after and was redirected as if I was using a proxy:p

Here, copy and paste it: |
And it isn't a stupid question, some keyboards don't have that character :)

Fixed, and I apologize.
As you can tell I have little experience with the product system. This is my first mod.
I wish I had a test board. Does anyone know if creating a testing forum is against the TOS of vbulletin?

To answer your question - No.

Jelsoft requires that it not be open to the public, and that it be under a subdirectory of your domain in which the licensed vbulletin installation is on under the folder named "testvb".

A test copy of vB is very useful, and very helpful. :)

If anyone needs any help with this let me know, I will gladly guide them and/or do it for them.

lol..yea no prom just helping out to ease everybody's mind to getting this to work..

I've come across another problem...its nothing major as i'm planning to phase them out anyway.... but either this doesn't play nice with sub-domains, or there is an incomparability with VBadvanced that treats its behaviour like a proxy....it could be both...but i'd imagine it has more to do with VBa somehow.

For example: mydomain.com|www.mydomain.com|forums.mydomain.com

The subdomain forums.mydomain.com needs to be added there. :)

Here's a temporary fix for you to use in Safari. Using the debug menu, change the user agent to MAC MSIE 5.22. You can use Netscape 4.79 as well but not all of the java features are available.

Type the following command in Terminal (while Safari is NOT running):

% defaults write com.apple.Safari IncludeDebugMenu 1

Then relaunch Safari.

The debug menu has some useful options on it, so you may find this a very useful hack. If you ever wish to disable it again, just repeat the command with a "0" instead of a "1".

maybe a option to have it on just that page... I have used this to stop my spam bots thats why I was wondering about that. Ill take a look at the code maybe change it around some so it just loads on that page. cause I wouldnt mind if they looked at my site on a proxy but if they try to register i would like to stop them.

Never mind i managed to get rid of it.

I did like this (haxxed from another thread)

Log into your FTP
Go to public_html --> forum --> includes
Download "config.php"

Below
<?php

Add
define('DISABLE_HOOKS', true);

Save and Re-upload

Now If you're using Firefox go to Tools --> Options --> Privacy
Click the button that says "Settings". Make sure "Cookies" are ticked and click "OK". Press "OK" again. Close your browser and try going to your site and see if it worked.

For Internet Explorer
Go to Tools --> Internet Options
Click on "Delete Cookies".

Now go into your ACP --> Plugins & Products --> Plugin Manager
Look for "Web Proxy Redirector" (most likely it'll be this one that is causing the problem).

Edit the Plugin named "Web Proxy Redirector" and change "Plugin is Active" to "No".

Edit your 'config.php' file again

Change this
define('DISABLE_HOOKS', true);

To this
//define('DISABLE_HOOKS', true);

Save and Re-upload.

But I removed it :(

Don't know what went wron ... Can't miss much with installing a product ...

Here's the info on what the safari debug menu can do. There some info on how to set debug points in your code, too.

http://developer.apple.com/internet/safari/faq.html#anchor14

Capabilities seem quite extensive. Any further instructions on what to do with it?

Also, note well, there is now a v3 Safari beta available for windows that you can use. Check the apple site for that beta.

On your site I get two " messages, one for 'showbody' and the other for 'proxy'.

From description:It uses javascript to determine if the current domain matches the forum's domain.
So what about Frames? I'm going to be redoing a forum where all links to the forum from the main website keep the forum in a frame (The frame was used as a site navigation bar).

So, the domains will still match, but I'm not sure if you mean JUST the domain, or if the entire URL has to match.

I also saw someone mentioned on the first page that it was "too bad iFrames couldn't be used" or something to that extent, and you didn't seem to correct them, so I assume frames are a no go? :(

I think this mod is a great idea. A few things that might be helpful... I still want to allow users that have javascript disabled. For one, the search engine bots come in like that and who knows what this will do to them. It would be nice if that could be an option. How much would that reduce the effectiveness? For some, 50% is better than nothing (while still allowing non-javascript browsers if possible).

Second, someone else had a good idea of only using this for the register page. Since registration IPs are permanently logged, that is really all that is necessary for some forums -- unless they are hacking accounts. Does it block guest proxy access to the forum completely or only when a user tries to post?

Another person had a suggestion of keeping a log or report (like create a thread) of users using anon-proxies. That's a neat idea as well. The RBL-Proxy checker mod (that is now unavailable) would auto-ban users who registered with a proxy.

ISO:

Thanks for this mod. Love it!

Perhaps a small wish list item....

The text color used for the "Redirecting" message was one of our site's light grey "alt" colors that works fine with a dark background as on our system but not on white that showed during the redirect message (I could barely read it). So I added html formatting to change it to "red" in the plugin. It might be nice to be able to override the default colors to allow one to customize the foreground (and perhaps the background) just in case.

Anyway, changing the mod took less than 30 seconds so its not a biggy.

And this is a great mod as it stands!

Thanks. -- Rik

I got the same Javascript error as well not only from Safari but also when I tried to log on from my mobile (cell phone) with a standard web browser. I'm getting a lot of problems with trolls on my board who constantly try to outwit the mods by coming in from free proxys, this mod would be invaluable for me(and many others) if these issues can be resolved. Im one person who's forum users are redirected if the hack is enabled. We are in dire need of a proxy detecting hack like this (trolls a plenty) but we are all redirected.

I entered the forum's domain correctly and i entered a redirection website.

Hope you are going to post an update soon (^^)

I'll admit, I'm relatively new with vBulletin, so installing plugins and what not is a learning thing. Anyways, could someone give a decent step-by-step to install this? i.e. where I need to edit the data and what I need to do within the admin control panel.

Thanks a bunch!!

EDIT: I figured it out... I was lacking on sleep. *hits self in forehead*

I have this hack installed, however, noticed that the search engines such as Google has the description of each thread as:

"Sorry, you must have javascript enabled to view this site. Proxies are NOT allowed!...."

Is this going to be a problem with SEO?

Can anyone comment?

Thanks.

Holy sh*t I just checked our cached pages in Google and they are completely blank! Is this because of the problem mentioned in the post above?

For me, my board is a private one that only registered and approved members may read, so this doesn't bother me at all. Therefore I don't want search engines browsing the board and they can't.

So far this is working on a new install of vBulletin. Will see what happens when it is reopened for all members.

I wish I'd had something like this several years back when I had a year long problem with someone using masks to wrongfully access the board.

scan-pa, I just visited your site using a web proxy and I was not redirected. I had access to your portal and forum pages. Have you disabled this hack after all?

I installed it and it seemed to be working fine - I was redirected to a page I created when using a proxy, and I had access to my site using my regular IP.

However, I'm not willing to screw up access by Google etc (adsense is money LOL). Rather than take that chance I've disabled the hack, although I can't honestly see a problem with it.

Any more feedback here? I must have looked through a dozen pages of comments and people seem about 50/50 as to whether this works as it should.

I set this up on my site, So if they come in with a proxy, I will be redirecting them to the regular site.

I dont think spiders would have trouble.. why would they?

Pete C
02-29-2008, 11:18 PM
Well I hope your "regular site" isn't the one that was mentioned before the edit LMAO. Lucky for me I'd already heard of it, so no chance of going there!

Anyways, it does seem the hack was updated to take account of spiders - they do seem able to index my site. Unfortunately it appears to redirect all AOL users and I think there's a few other providers that use proxies as a matter of course.

Personally I think this hack is a great idea, and it's the providers who use proxies that suck. If this could be set up only to catch people who use proxies by choice, then it would get a MOTM nomination from me! Sadly, isosdcftp who released this hasn't been online here since last October, so unless anyone else can establish exactly what it redirects and what it doesn't, then it isn't worth the risk of alienating the few genuine people who may have no choice but to accept a proxy IP from their service provider.

Back to the bad old days of checking proxy listings whenever a new member signs up I guess. :erm:

I've re-enabled this and (so far) it seems to working as intended (now marked as Installed). It redirects web proxies, but none of my members has reported any problems. The site is still being indexed, and my Google Adsense appears unaffected. (I'm still using 3.6.5 btw).

I found I only have to check or uncheck the plug-in to enable or disable it.

I never had any trouble with this hack till today, one guy cannot use the site. Its frustrating because I have to dump an otherwise great hack.... *sigh* It should have an "ignore IP" or something to let certain ppl in.

Pete C

I never had any trouble with this hack till today, one guy cannot use the site . . .

nightbloom : Out of interest, is it that you have one member who wishes to access your site via a proxy, or is that another service/IP provider is being blocked?

I ask because I've had no negative feedback (so far). The modification is catching web proxies, but I've had no reports of redirection from anyone using a genuine IP address. Although it blocks web proxies from using the site it doesn't prevent them sending Email if there's a problem with a genuine account.

If a regular IP service is being blocked, would you mind telling me/us which it is?

I dont know if this has been pointed out or not, I installed this worked nicely ez to install and everything. I checked a bunch of proxy sites and it works great. However if someone is searching for your website on google or stumbles upon an interesting post and wants to enter your site through google or any other search engine, it stopes them from viewing it saying proxies are not allowed on this site.... So i uninstalled it for that reason alone. Otherwise a great mod despite it blocking "honest" users using search engines and wherever else your site is linked.

hope that made sense :/

Sorry to report, that didn't last long. On a small board with only 208 members, I didn't make it from 2am until 6:30am before it redirected a legit member not using a proxy. I had to disable it.

Any chance of this being ported to 3.7?

I'm using this with 3.7.1 and it seems to be working in the same way as it did on 3.6 before I upgraded. I'm still making a few changes to my board, so it's currently closed - but please feel free to try accessing with a web proxy. I've tried several and it redirects every time, but genuine IP's don't seem to have any probs and the spiders are still crawling ;)

It's more likely to be the web proxy than the browser, some of them strip the scripts, and some let you choose. Try this one and uncheck the No Scripts box: http://www.guardster.com/subscription/proxy_free.php

Either way, you can't view with the web proxy whether it enables javascript or not. If javascript isn't enabled it stops the redirect though, which is unfortunate because people don't realise why they're being blocked - but then, if they're hiding behind proxies, who cares?

If you read the original post made with this release, it states clearly that it's not compatible with Safari. Having said that, Safari is certainly a fast browser and its users are increasing. Obviously no-one wants to alienate people who use popular browsers, so unless further support/upgrades are offered for this hack, it could be on it's way to the graveyard. I'll be keeping an eye on my visitor configurations - this one may be heading for the bin if Safari continues to grow in popularity.

I not sure if this is true or not because since I install this Mods I started to lose the search from google and other searching site: yahoo or msn.com
My site was pretty good at the very specific keywords and will be on the first list when you search it. Now after a few days it's all gone from the search. I think it's because google robots and others are using proxy to crawl the site. So I wouldn't use this mod!

But it's very nice and useful mod for others, it would be useful for others, but just not for me hehe
Thank you I still love your mod.

Dear m8's,

This is a very nice Add-on.

As i did not want this to affect visitors and search engine bots i changed the code of the plugin a little bit

global $vbphrase, $vbulletin;

if ($vbulletin->userinfo['userid'])
{
Rest of the Code
}

So it will affect logged in users only.

Next step is:
Redirect Users to a php script of my own wich logs the attempt..
with username and proxy ip and then redirects the user to google.

So It will affects only loged in users that try to use webproxy.. and even tells me what user it was.

Great Stuff Thank you!

Greez Aspi

Edit: you say Safari not supported.. At least with Safari for Windows it works fine.
