I would change the welcome header message to make it smaller.. It takes up almost all the browsing page just the header and welcome message..

Also if you are not willing to make the welcome box smaller.. At least have 2 google ads in the left column. Thats just open space wasted

I would have a new site navigation written up.. one like the top navbar.. Rollover etc

I would personally have things like intro at the top

Possibly having a wider style as default.. Fixed + left column = not alot of space
