It uses both. When you construct an avatar pack, you have to make each image in both versions for browsers that don't support PNGs.

I installed this in my 3.7 and it works fine, but the page that displays when a user creates an avatar does not look anything like my site at all.

How do I make this fit within the theme of my site?

There are CSS controls in the Living Avatar Admin CP that let you change the colors and font styles.

But that does not make it look like it is part of my site. What about all the navigation and header logos that are part of my forums? I need this to look like it is a natural part of my site, not just the colors and fonts.

LA doesn't do that inherently. The best you can do is add the appropriate font colors and styles.

You can also do what I did for my forum. I created a separate vB page with the header and footer, and put the LA pages inside a resizable iframe. It's not terribly difficult to learn, but it will require a little bit of effort on your part to make look the way you want. Learning how to make your own pages is a useful thing to know anyway for other projects you'll want to incorporate down the road.

Thanks for the help. It is a bummer though that a mod that claims to be compatible with vbulletin does not offer a way to make a mandatory page that all users must use actually look like it is part of the forum.

I also had to modify to the "living_avatars/includes/functions.php" file to make it run a bit smoother. For example, I no longer needed the "Return to Forum" link, so I removed it. And because it was in an inline frame, I added "target="_top" to some of the links. And anything in the LA code that referred to index.hp, I changed to my LivingAvatars_vb.php file.

Yeah, I've been meaning to make the same changes to mine, just haven't gotten around to it yet And so far, only one of our members has used the LA, so I figured I could get to some other things first (going to do some avatar packs once I get my Wacom Tablet). I'm glad it worked out for you though.

I've always presumed that since most mods use the forum header and footer, that there must be a particular issue with this mod that subduck decided to leave that out. Maybe an issue with custom headers and footers perhaps.

I am using this on 3.7 and it is working great with the vbcredits add on. I would like to force my users to only use this as an avatar but when I disable the custom avatar upload option the LA's disappear. Any idea's on how I can work around this?

i have added this mod, and it works great...except i have to manually go to avatars in the admin panel and Move Items from File System into Database...for the avatars to show up. Any ideas how to fix this?

For some reason, certain items can be viewed when editing a Living Avatar, but when the user clicks "Save Avatar", the new Living Avatar image is missing the item! I've examined all attributes of the items image. Sometimes they are items I've created, though other items I've created work perfectly. Sometimes they're savable in Internet Explorer, but not Firefox. Anybody else had this problem?

I see this has been asked several times by other members but there has not been an answer posted yet as to what could be the issue here. Everything worked great on my forum for over a year now until today when I got a "You do not have access to this area" message. Nothing has been changed on the forum so I am not sure what could have caused this. Reinstalled and still do not have access.

OK, I fixed this. I am going to attempt to explain how I did it. I am sure that there is a much easier way but I am not very good at db stuff so it was a lot of trial and error for me.

I dropped the table la_admin
Rebuilt it manually using the MYSQL operatons to recreate the table using 3 fields. Using MYSQL insert I recreated the field values using the info that I found in the install.php file.

userid TINYINT(3) UNSIGNED NOT NULL DEFAULT 0,
username VARCHAR(64) NOT NULL DEFAULT '',
email VARCHAR(64) NOT NULL DEFAULT '',

) " );
Then I just inserted myself and the other admins in the values. I had to go about creating the table manually because I kept getting syntax errors with the code above.

Anyway, I now have access back and I hope that helps someone else out with the same problem

I am concerned about it breaking again when we upgrade to 3.8. Anyone done this yet with LA? My members have also suggested several enhancements such as the ability to return and trade limited edition items. I use it in conjunction with vbcredits. I have a great graphics person who has extended our collection of items considerably and it is an integral part of our forums.

I agree. Is there anyway we can switch from being a Living Avatar to Living Profile Picture. So people can select this as their profile picture INSTEAD of it being an avatar....

The easiest way to do this is via FTP. If you are using an FTP client simply right click the folder & choose "CHMOD". Once you do that, you will see a line that has a few numbers. Simply change that like to 777 (You will noticed extra check marks being added). Once that's done click save & you succesfully CHMOD'ed your folder ^_^

That's a hard one to figure out, haven't seen that error before. If you PM me with your FTP username & password then I can login to your server and do some tests to figure out why Living Avatars is not obtaining the correct information.

Almost all hosting companies have GD2 enabled by default. If not then you'll have to contact your hosting company and tell them you want GD2 enabled on your server, it will only take them a minute to do.

I had the same problem when I moved livingavatars.com to a new server. Just chmod all the avatars in the the 'avatars' folder to 777 and you'll be fine. All future users/avatars will be fine as well.

btw: whoever have the same problem, usually the GD2 on a share server is not activated, the already there. so all you need to to is to activate it. just go in to the php.ini (in the php configuration) and enable it

All the layout information is obviously saved, because when I go back to my living avatar I can edit it. So I guess it would be as simple as a 'save layout' button They could then appear in a saved layouts folder, where you could 'load' them, or delete them, with a thumbnail next to them. It's just using already existing code - except for the ability to store more than one layout per user.

I warn you, those instructions are old and don't work, but make for a good template to do the work. I'd recommend you have someone tech savvy do this for you.

Note that Living Avatar 'integrates' with vBulletin just fine, but it uses it's own pages. The above mod puts it inside your header and foot and gets it to use your colors.

Yes, this is an addon, it doesn't replace what you already have.

It would be in the vBulletin User CP under avatar settings. It's where you would normally edit your avatar.

This is really just the coolest mod.

I wouldn't wait for the update. It takes time to upload all of the item packs you'll want. Plus, the update is simple enough to do.

Living Avatars saves the images as gifs in the vbulletin filesystem, that is normal.

As a coder/designer myself, I have never, and will never setup an application to take money from someone without giving product to them immediately, unless a contracted job is necessary. That's just common decency and respect to your customers. Fraud checks should be done BEFORE payment is accepted, not delayed.

If this was a "service", then yeah, I could see waiting a bit, but it's not.
In addition, if this was not during business hours, again, I could see waiting a few hours, but once again, not so much.

Payment was made @ 1230 their time, well into the business day, well inside hours that support should be provided. Since this is a pretty reasonably known business (subdreamer), there were almost guaranteed to be people there. They just didn't want to do their jobs, and THAT is what I find fault with.

Better yet:
ziad (http://www.livingavatars.com/forum/member.php?u=1) has been online since I made my post requesting clarification as to why this hasn't been resolved yet ( a good 3 hours before I posted here). Did I get a response there? Nope.

For the record, your 1 email (sent at 6:30pm, 6 hours after the transaction) was never ignored. You created a post here complaining about us to everyone before even emailing us. I absolutely agree, but guess what, sometimes what you don't see as the case isn't always so. For example, brushing off paying customers for hours, during normal business hours no less, that says the opposite of what you just said.

Sometimes it is, in fact necessary to get nasty, and while I hate to do it, I will, by no means shy away from it. Why? Because sitting around for hours, waiting for you to respond got me what?? Nothing. Posting a response in a more public forum got me nothing. Sending a nasty email (which I do hate sending), same thing.

Moral of the story? Don't ignore your customers. We do pay the bills. I understand you don't THINK you were ignoring me, but, you did, in fact login to your own forum, at least once or twice after I made the post and chose not to reply to it.

From what I can see, the product is great, but I gotta say, customer service, really leaves a lot to be desired. I shouldn't HAVE to contact CS at all, and I shouldn't HAVE to post in a public forum (or two) AND send an email just to get what I paid for, over 8 hours after the fact, ESPECIALLY when dealing with as big a company as subdreamer supposedly is.

Anyways, I'm done here. Please, the next time you try to attack your customers and accuse them of something, make sure you've got your facts straight.

You have this idea that we are some big company attacking you when, but wolfstream that is not true. As time passes I'm sure you will come to realize that we are here to help you, customer support is really important to me and I promise that after being a customer you'll find out that we really do care.

It's all good, like I said, the problem (for me) is now resolved, and while it took time to do things, as long as the software on your end is being looked at, hey, that's all good. Maybe it was the differing paypal and order email address? I use my gmail account for things I absolutely NEED to get through, because it's not as strict as my own spam filters. Then again, with over 150 domains, I've got to be pretty strict on filters.

Another issue entirely:
For those interested in a usergroup limitation to this, I am in the process of putting this together and testing it out based on this mod (https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showthread.php?t=183171&highlight=Living+Avatars), some template hacks, htaccess mods and file renaming. If enough people are interested (and the integration author gives permission (I won't redistribute the LA files, but I'll tell how to get it working)), when I'm done testing I'll put up a workaround for it.

It would seem I am experiencing the same problem with your automatic email system. I have posted on the forum (albeit not very long ago to be honest) but have had no responce as of yet. Please could you let me know what I need to do in this case. I can email you my transaction id etc if needbe.

Just as a quick note though, these things happen and reading on previous responces they seem a little hostile at times. Living avatars is an excellent product and yeah ok, there seems to have been a messup with the emailing software. These things happen, threads get missed, emails get missed, and hell if I was on holiday the chances are I would probably be too drunk to read them anyways LOL.

I have seen this kind of thing before. If it is only this user getting the error, it might be due to the ' in the username.

The only easy solution to that is change the user's username.

I would not give your user a choice. Make it part of the forum rules retroactively.

Certain special characters just shouldn't be allowed in names anyways. Really, I'm surprised vBulletin allows this by default as these special characters can cause a number of database issues.

its better than cf's character system was, uses less resources for one thing, though i'll admit when erwin first launched it, it was the best i'd seen, i was one of the first item artists he had there.. back in the day

this is a great mod but i cant seem to intergrate it, everything else works perfectly.

the only button i see under admin settings is the "add forum link" button. is that it? Or is there another way to intergrate it

because right now when i try to customize my avatar as a forum user, im taken to an entirely new page. the customizing page is not wrapped around my default forum wrapper :(

That's how it's supposed to be. This 'mod' is just an external page, nothing more. It does not wrap into your forums design at all.
There is a mod to help with that, I can't for the life of me think of it right now though.
