Seriously, I got tired of trying to figure out how to get the news I wanted on my site that provided the whole story and not just a description or a feed that was nothing more than a ?disguised ad? for another site, so I located a Google Map Reader, acquired permission to use the program and wrote a ?modification for vb.?

Files to edit: 0
Queries to run: 0
Uses Product: Yes
Template Edits: 1

Testing:
I have tested this on 3.5.x and 3.6.x and it works fine on both. 3.5.x users follow this link:

VbGoogleNews 3.5.X version 1.0.2 ( https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showthread.php?t=145919)

What this program does:
This is a Google Map with interactive pins on each continent. Access is gained via the navbar.

Usage:
Select the location on the map that you?d like by dragging mouse, click on pin until you locate the exact country, region, local area you desire and the news will appear. Click on article and a new window will display story; members never leave your site.

Changelog
v1.0.1 working version
v1.0.2 two minor modifications to adjust width

Since the Reader and RSS Feeds is remotely hosted and they do the upgrades, I can?t think of any improvements necessary, but feel free to make suggestions and/or provide file(s), translate to another language, whatever!

Provide a news feed(s) and I will get it installed, in fact, we encourage anyone to submit news feeds, but it should be for local news.

can we make it a little wider?

lefthome
04-23-2007, 12:45 PM
can we make it a little wider?It's at 680px now. What did you have in mind? :)

*edit*

By the way, making that change is really easy if you would like to do it yourself.

Admin CP => Styles & Templates => Style Manager => Edit Templates => Googlenews

Find:
<script>setTimeout('hmap(680,500,0,0,0,0,0,10,0,1);', 100);</script>

Change the width and/or height as desired. They are the first two numbers in brackets: 680 (width) 500 (height).

I called this News Reader and RSS Feed for Dummies for a reason so we don?t have to do squat other than load the hack. The rss feeds is remotely hosted, so this has to be an installation issue.

A few step-by-step questions:

You are using vbulletin 3.6.5, yes?
Did you upload the vbgooglenews.php to your root directory?
Did you upload the four pictures to your image/misc directory?
Did you go to your AdminCP => Plugins & Products =>Manage Products => Add/Import Product => upload googlenews.xml=> Import?
Did you go to your AdminCP => Styles & Templates => Edit Templates => Navbar and install link?

If you did all that then there is no reason this program will not work

Awesome! I love it being a news junkie. Now I can easily catch up on news around the country. One question. Why does the navbar seem to be stretched out longer than the page when viewing the map? It's more of an asthetic issue as it doesn't affect much other than having a scroll bar at the bottom of the screen.

Actually the same thing happens on the demo link for the mod. I can make the browser window as large as possible, 1650 X 1050, and I still have to scroll left and right. In other words, for some reason, the navbar is over 100%. Make any sense?

Uncached templates: Googlenews (1)

I also noticed in the breadcrumb/navigation that "Googlenews" is forced to a weird color sometimes instead of reading the proper colors of the style like other areas do...

To fix uncached template, edit googlenews.php

and change:

$globaltemplates = array('googlenews');

to

$globaltemplates = array('Googlenews');

open up the navbar template and replace the code (installed for this modification) to the following:

<! -- Googlenews -->
<td class="vbmenu_control"><a href="googlenews.php$session[sessionurl_q]" target="_blank">Googlenews</a></td>
<! -- Googlenews -->

notice that all you are doing is adding the word target_blank" But unless you are comfortable doing that; then just cut and paste the code. that minor addition will make the map appear in a different tab/page :)

I must say! WOOOW! and can I narrow the news to certain topics? or resize the window? can I add more RSS' Feeds?

Open up navbar template and located the following:

<script>setTimeout('hmap(680,500,0,0,0,0,0,10,0,1);', 100);</script>
The first two numbers 680-width and 500-height. Adjust those as desired but I suggest you leave the others alone.

Regarding the feeds; this is a remotely hosted map and all that you can do is submit me the rss links you'd like and I will ensure they get reviwed. Make sure you provide information on exact area news is regarding, i.e. Country, State, City, etc.

Can I choose, which language show up in the articles?

The reason I did this hack was because I really didn't want to mess with feeding the board rss feeds, hence, News Reader with RSS Feeds for Dummies.

Anyway, if you would like a new feed added, remember these are remotely hosted, provide me with the country, state, city, etc and the link to the feed and I will ensure it is added to the database, which will take a few days to accomplish. :)

Anyone else started getting "fatal errors" as the mod tries to read in the text stories? The arrow spins for a long time, then it goes to an error message?

I'd like to have a 'news feed' with Disney-related information on my site. Would this hack be a solution to what I'm looking for?

If so, then could the information carry over to CMPS (my vBadvanced homepage)?

I'm less than two months into modifying my site, so I'm still relatively new. Be gentle. :)

SirFlash
05-15-2008, 01:30 PM
ArnyVee - This hack can't be modified to filter out only Disney news, GoogleNews only provides regular News as gathered by Google, this hack lets you click on a location in the world and get local news from that part of the world only. If you want to provide Disney-related information to your website, i recommend you create a new Disney forum in your vbulletin and add a new RSS Feed to load info into that forum. You can get Disney RSS feeds from http://www.wdwinfo.com/rss/ and http://www.wdwmagic.com/rss.htm and http://www.magicalmountain.net/WDWNewsDetail.asp?NewsID=1898 (Use Google to find more Disney RSS Feeds).

ArnyVee

Thanks SirFlash!

So, then I could make a module in my vBadvanced homepage (CMPS) and 'feed' the info to it, I would assume.

How do I load info into a particular forum using the RSS feeds? And, can I have more than one RSS feed in a forum?
