How do you do this? what size should it be?

16 X 16px.
http://www.vbulletin.org/favicon.ico is an example. (http://www.vbulletin.org/favicon.ico)

upload it to your forum root. it works with firefox.

Yes, make sure the name is "favicon" and the extension is "ico"
