If nothing else works, you could always ban them then disable or moderate new members. If it's personal, eventually they should give up. If it's ad spammers, the course of action is entirely different.

No, his solution isn't perfect, but it works. For a year now, we've made all first posts from new users moderated. We would have so much spam if we didn't do that. We have started to monitor IPs and have htaccess banned many IPs lately and have cut down on the spam, but it's still there. Luckily, our Mod team is willing to approve first posts pretty rapidly (those that aren't spam, that is!).

We started getting hit harder after we started showing up on search pages more.

I installed one of the mods off here that disallows members from registering faster than is humanly possible (such as programs that autofill in the information in less than a second). I haven't had any problems since I installed it.

there are 5 or 6 mods to help with spam at vb.org/

I suggest using the search button when you have questions ;)

doesn't the text verification stop bots from registering?

how many new threads are you going to start here asking for help about the same thing?

~ JIt wasn't for mine. At first I made it so I had to moderate every member, but that got to be a pain in the can. Then I noticed that it was coming from some sex site. The mod I installed is working like a charm.
