Well anyway here goes,

I have found so many cool mods here, few of which work which is SO sad!!!!
One would think that as we have to PAY for VB that there would be some sort of SERVICE, never mind that VB advertise unsurpassed service!!

For example, I run a WoW and a Lineage free server. Any custom mods are CHECKED by the Devs first and then made available to download in the forums!!!Some are even INCLUDED in the core files!! Why cant VB do the same I would like to know? This is what I would call "GOOD SERVICE"!!

Also, when you ASK for SERVICE from VB, you get zip!!Even if you are prepared to PAY for it!! (happened to me)

I have loaded VB 3.6.4 about 8 times now, and each mod or skin I add, messes it up totally!
In my opinion, 3.4 was the best to date, skins worked, mods worked and cool! Never mind that I just lost 2500 member accounts through it all, as there is no facility to re-install the 3.4 DB to the 3.6 from the CP or any other one for that matter!! Even impex had errors!!

Examples: Shoutbox - Replace x in the y template with z etc...well x does not exist!!! This worked well on 3.4!
Googlemaps - You need to be a rocket scientist to get that one working!!
Zoints - Well only partly works!!
And so the list goes on and on and on!!

So my suggestion to VB is: CHECK the mods for compatibility first, then allow them to be added to your forum!!

The mods all work and this site is open and free source.The service is awesome in my opinion.

Whether the mods work or not doesn't matter (Most do).. Jelsoft doesn't promise support for the Mods you find here at VB.org as the Mods here are made by independent coders. If you purchase VB and don't mod it I'm sure it works great, and if doesn't the guys over at vbulletin.com will help you get it working.

Once you come here and start HACKING what you bought from them, thats on you and it's up to you to get the support you need from the authors of the mods (HACKS) you install.

There is no such thing as vb 3.4 so I don't know what you are referring to there.

All modifications here are unofficial, provided free of charge by other vbulletin owners. To say only few work is just nonsense IMO, there are very few that don't work (I can only think of 1 or 2 I have seen released recently that simply didn't work).

I can tell you with 100% certainty that we will not check every single modification released here, that would take up large amounts of time that the staff here do not have (we are not Jelsoft employees, we are unpaid volunteers).

If all the mods you try aren't working then you are either extremely unlucky or doing something wrong.

If you need service with an official vbulletin product then the vBulletin Support Team will help you. If it's not an official product; they are under no obligation to help you, the author of the mod is there for that.

I think a better feedback system and better beta and bug tracking tools will help the community police itself. I know that has been talk about before, and probably is still in the works, I'm just mentioning it here because it seems relevant.

Even if you are prepared to PAY for it!! (happened to me)
Almost without exception people who request service in the forum her on the org and don't get help aren't willing to pay a reasonable price for it. They want to pay $10 or $20 for something that will take many hours or days to do. I cut the best deals I can when I do custom work, because I know people can't afford to pay me $60 an hour (which is what I make if I get a real job), but still, it's just not cheap.

This site is incredible, plain and simple, the amazing modifications and support is why i chose vBulletin over phpbb and IPB...so I have no idea why you have such problems...

Not sure if you REALLY want to know my opinion!
We are always interested in constructive opinions/critisism/feedback.
I have found so many cool mods here, few of which work which is SO sad!!!!As already mentioned by some others, i find it difficult to believe that only a few work, if you install modifications that where deisgned for the vBulletin version that you are using.
One would think that as we have to PAY for VB that there would be some sort of SERVICE, never mind that VB advertise unsurpassed service!!With the license you pay for the software developed and maintained by Jelsoft (ie. vBulletin). You also get free professional support for the software that you purchased with your license for the duration of your license. There are no additional charges to receive support for our software.

Currently the only additional services that are charged for are:
- Professional Installation Service
- Professional Upgrade Service
- Additional Phone Support

For example, I run a WoW and a Lineage free server. Any custom mods are CHECKED by the Devs first and then made available to download in the forums!!!Some are even INCLUDED in the core files!! Why cant VB do the same I would like to know? This is what I would call "GOOD SERVICE"!!There are many that offer the modifications they written for free here on vBulletin.org. These modifications are not written by Jelsoft. Jelsoft also can not check each modification and the volunteer vBulletin.org staff also can not do this.

Also the vBulletin.org community is a Member to Member support community. This means that it will be a community effort to assist other members when possible

Also, when you ASK for SERVICE from VB, you get zip!!Even if you are prepared to PAY for it!! (happened to me)See above. Support for our product (ie. vBulletin) is never charged for, and most customers seem to be satisfied with the level of official support they receive on vBulletin.com Forums or through the Support Ticket system.

I have loaded VB 3.6.4 about 8 times now, and each mod or skin I add, messes it up totally!A style that is designed for the version of vBulletin that you are running should not mess up your board. We however always do recommend that you test the installation of a new style or product on a testboard before isnstalling it on your production board. Jelsoft has not control over third party software/styles that you want to install on your board.

In my opinion, 3.4 was the best to date, skins worked, mods worked and cool! Never mind that I just lost 2500 member accounts through it all, as there is no facility to re-install the 3.4 DB to the 3.6 from the CP or any other one for that matter!! Even impex had errors!!As mentioned before, there is no version 3.4.

I don't see many situations where something will make you loose member accounts. Even if there are problems then support will often be able to assist you in solving it. I don't know what you have tried importing with ImpEx, but again even if there are issues when running ImpEx, official support will in most cases be able to assist you. If you have had such an issue where you did not receive support, please sent me the Support Ticket id in a PM and i will look into it.

vBulletin is the best forum software ever.. It has got the best system going I have seen.

If you upgrade your forum without making a backup and screw it up, thats your fault. On my forum everyday at 3am it does a daily database backup. Every 3days I download them and every week I generate a full file backup and download that.

I have xammp installed and every 2weeks I update it so its in syncronisation with my online forum so i can do all testing.

When I have ever had a problem vB have always been more than happy to help.

Wow, so many responses and Hambil thank you so much for offering me some support!
I live in South Africa, a country that is the MOST expensive in the world for Internet, and my "broadband" at 30k/s with a 3 gig cap costs US$150 (10% of my salary) a month, so when I have these problems loading and uploading to my server, my cap is gone quickly!

My problem is this...I start loading the mods...As I get to the end of the process, they all say...go into templates and where you see "x", add "y" under it...that is fine, but on none of them do I find the "x"!!!!NAVBAR especially!!!

Latest example...Official AddonChat
It says find this in navbar...
<td class="vbmenu_control"><a href="memberlist.php$session[sessionurl_q]">$vbphrase[members_list]</a></td>
<td class="vbmenu_control"><a href="calendar.php$session[sessionurl_q]">$vbphrase[calendar]</a></td>

then add this under it...
<!-- AddonChat -->
<td id="sigmachat" class="vbmenu_control">
<a href="$show[nojs_link]#sigmachat">$vbphrase[sigmachat_title] $chatcountbrack</a>
<script type="text/javascript"> vbmenu_register("sigmachat"); </script></td>
<!-- /AddonChat -->

JOKE!!! Like all the mods that require this sort of thing, the "find" is NOT THERE!!!

With regards to the version I had before, it was 3.5.4 sorry about that!!

Cheers
Chuck

Well, the problem is you are trying to make template changes to a heavily modified skin. All the templates have changed. It's going to take some work. We'll have to go through each mod change one at a time.

Here is what I suggest:

1: Setup a test board (vbulletin allows one test board in their licensing, so it's not an issue).

2: Add your skin.

3: Install one hack at a time and as soon as you run into a problem post it here and we'll see if we can't find the solution. Don't keep going until we fix the problem, or you'll just confuse things.

4. Be patient - I'll answer and help, and I'm sure others will, but we also have other things to do and we want to see that you are putting in time and effort and learning as we go, too :)

Latest example...Official AddonChat
It says find this in navbar...
<td class="vbmenu_control"><a href="memberlist.php$session[sessionurl_q]">$vbphrase[members_list]</a></td>
<td class="vbmenu_control"><a href="calendar.php$session[sessionurl_q]">$vbphrase[calendar]</a></td>

then add this under it...
<!-- AddonChat -->
<td id="sigmachat" class="vbmenu_control">
<a href="$show[nojs_link]#sigmachat">$vbphrase[sigmachat_title] $chatcountbrack</a>
<script type="text/javascript"> vbmenu_register("sigmachat"); </script></td>
<!-- /AddonChat -->

JOKE!!! Like all the mods that require this sort of thing, the "find" is NOT THERE!!!

With regards to the version I had before, it was 3.5.4 sorry about that!!

Yup - it's because you have modified templates. Here is how I would do it (using the case you show above as an example).

Clearly the chat is trying to place a menu for itself after the calendar in your nav bar. Everyone seems to want to go after the calendar - I guess it's become sort of a defacto standard.

So what you want to do, is search for "calendar", and what you will find is lines that look sort of like the ones you are looking for, but not exactly. They should have calendar.php and $vbphrase[calendar] in them at least.

Then just add the code after that. If you are confused, show us the line with the calender.php and a few lines before and after it, and we should be able to see what's going on.

It looks like your skin has removed the navigation from the navbar template (skinners do the dumbest things sometimes). If you look, your template starts with "<!-- breadcrumb, login, pm info -->". However, looking at the source of your forum home page the navigation is up way, way higher than that before "<!-- Banner Rotator by Redline -->". I'm guessing it's been moved to the header template.

Further, they are using background images instead of text, and they've completely removed the calender (or perhaps you have it disabled).

Their nav section looks like this:

<tr>
<td style="width: 199px;"><img src="RaidArena/misc/links_left.gif" alt="" width="199" height="43" /></td>
<td style="width: 72px;"><a class="homeover" href="index.php">&nbsp;</a></td>
<td style="width: 102px;"><a class="usercpover" href="usercp.php">&nbsp;</a></td>

<td style="width: 109px;"><a class="registerover" href="register.php">&nbsp;</a></td>
<td style="width: 117px;"><a class="membersover" href="memberlist.php">&nbsp;</a></td>
<td style="width: 67px;"><a class="faqover" href="faq.php">&nbsp;</a></td>
<td id="navbar_search" style="background-image:url(RaidArena/misc/links_bg.gif);"><div align="left"><a class="searchover" href="search.php">&nbsp;</a><script type="text/javascript"> vbmenu_register("navbar_search", 1); </script></div></td>
</tr>

So you would want to put your code under the line <td style="width: 102px;"><a class="usercpover" href="usercp.php">&nbsp;</a></td>.

However, you'll need to create a matching image for it, since your navbar uses images and not text.

My guess if you'll find this code in the header template.

It looks like a pretty poorly built skin IMHO, even if it does look okay in the end. I recommend you get all the hacks installed on default VB, then pay someone to create a skin for you that won't wreck them.

Hi Hambil
this is where I am at...Besides Team Speak (not showing) and Zoints(not done yet) all the added mods worked.(got the other problems fixed)
I then added a "simple" skin from the forum, and BAM...all the mods are gone again!!Did not even edit a template...just uploaded the xml!!
Now, is there a set routine for uploading stuff? like skin first then the rest? I want the default to be the new skin...Can I remove this as default and revert back to VB?
Another full day wasted! Two weeks I have been at this now and 12 forums later...!!:((
I know I am a MAJOR noob dear readers, but hey...give an old man a break LOL!
When I get this working, my next issue will be how to import just my users!!! I dont even want to think about that one!!

maybe you're good to have a coder doing the installation of the mods for you, making sure they all work as they supposed to...

there is a lot of people who even say they know how to do the installs but always report bugs that does not exists, just because they are not able to install them properly... i'm not telling that you are an idiot, i'm far from it... but tell me, when you can't repair your car, do you ask your mother or a garage ?!

also, about having the mods here integrated to the core... i can tell you that 75% of my old hacks were integrated to the actual core... because they were requested and useful... Googlemap is for me a gadget, or a widget someone can easily forget about as a useful feature...

having problems seeing hacks when you upload a skin is regular on this place, because you did not ask how to do it at first, and you did not check where you applied your hacks... yes there is a "not-written" rule about applying hacks, and if you navigate thru here or ask in the How-To forum, you will have that answer...:
1- use the Default Style as a placeholder for your hacks
2- import your styles as Child of the Default Style...
3- edit the needed templates that are custom to your new style, if needed.

... as you tell in your last post, maybe you need help, complaining will just give you some relief because you are frustrated, but the best solution will be to ask someone for help...

hambil

The skin xml can make a ton of template changes (and clearly did). Mixing skins with mods is hard - and the same is true on any board. I personally don't use skins that have template changes on my boards because they are so heavily moded, and even if I made all the changes needed to get the mods to work, it's an upgrade nightmare.

Again, I'd suggest having one of the many very good designers here at the org make you a custom skin with min. template edits.

I couldn't disagree with you more, their service is phenomenal (when posted in the members area) All but I think 3 mods work here that I have tested, and if they don't work, they are usually supported so that you can get them working. And even besides that fact, vbulletin.org is what you could say a privelage, and not even vbulletin.com 's official website, is it their un-official sister site. Also, if that many skins aren't working, you must be doing something wrong.

Well I certainly appreciate all the comments.
I am not a coder, just an end user...maybe a dummies guide to installing mods and skins, especially dos and donts, would be helpful. It is people like Hambil that make this world a happy place, and they shall be blessed in a special way down the line!!!
Following Nexialys' suggestion and Hambil's advice, I have now managed to FINALLY get somewhere, loaded my skin as a child skin, and most of the mods I wanted now work (too scared to try the others).
NOW...my last problem is: How do I get to import my users? The reason is that the new DB if again different to the old one i.e. it has different fields! When I try to install, it wipes out the flields which will cause more problems. So...all i need to do, is import ONLY the user fields. I use Navicat in my game server, and find this program the best for MySQL as it is so user friendly, and MyPhpAdmin is no where near the quality in simple functionality.
I would like to thank the Lads who were very supportive, truly appreciated.

Hi Hambil
Well I lost the 2500 members on my 3.5.4 board.
I now have 190 new members on my "new 3.6.4 board"
Then I have the working 3.6.4 board.
I need to bring the 190 users into the new board..both 3.6.4
I thought of doing this...
create an sql of both boards, and convert into a exel worksheet, give each user a new number and match fields leaving fields blank that dont match, then paste the exel into Navicat, create a new sql and replace into my new board...OR is there an easier way?
cheers

I strnglu suggest against trying to do any manual merging from SQL, as this will for sure lead to only more problems.

You can use ImpEx. I strongly suggest you first do a test import on a test board.

PS Why did you create a new board in the first place instead of upgrading your current board?

Hi Hambil
Well I lost the 2500 members on my 3.5.4 board.

Almost all hosting services keep backups. I suggest you ask them right away if they have an old enough backup. Don't wait, every minute could count. Those users may not be lost yet.

Hi Hambil
I have great news...
I see you joined the forum LOL
Anyway, Thank God for Navicat!
I did what I said I was going to do, and I finally managed to add ALL 2500 users. It took the whole day to copy and paste and sort and upload etc (my bad connection) and Bingo!!
New forum, but all users are saved into 3.6.4 now!
All I still need to add is Zoints and Pay Pal and I am away!! Then just to edit a few forum pics...
I must thank you so very much for your support, willing ear and understanding.
Best wishes
Chuck

Cool, chuckrobbie's current issues seem to be resolved. If any further issues arise, please post in the modification thread, assuming the new issue is related to a modification, or post in one of the forums here (https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/forumdisplay.php?f=92) or here (http://www.vbulletin.com/forum/index.php), the latter of which will provide support for virgin boards, or boards that are able to turn off all modifications by using define('DISABLE_HOOKS', true); in the vB config file. Thank you.
