Historic Avatar Mod/Feature

I have a problem: I finally managed to talk the owner of the forum I admin on ezBoard into going to a self-hosted solution, with all the advantages of control, data backup etc and am very much hoping to use vBulletin.
But our users have become used to the historic avatars on ezBoard and are really using it as a feature. Basically I have been told to either find a good system with historic avatars (meaning when you change the avatar in your control panel it only affects future posts and not all you ever made) or forget the whole thing.
I have done a search for mods around here, and came up with zero. But maybe some of the more experiences users may know more than I do and can help me find what I need? Is it possible to write a mod like that?

for the sigs, it is a bit more complicated, but can be done... if someone want to do it.. lol
