Both are fine, really depends on how much you're allowing your users.
Try to refine your search, dont search the entire forum, rather search a specific forum you think what you might be looking for is in.

Also, sometimes it helps to just search the title as well.
I rarely fail at finding what I am looking for.

I find it difficult sometimes as well - even when searching only titles; especially if a search keyword is below the minimum character amount.

Searching a site with over 1 million posts is always going to get you a lot of results unless your search is very specific.

It would be nice if threads had tags :p

I have to agree,VB search is quite rubbish, thats why i use google to search vb.com or vb.org
ex. site:vbulletin.org abir 2 style (http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=site%3Avbulletin.org+abir+2+style&btnG=Google+Search)
you only get old indexed results but they are still better/

I narrowed the search to thread titles, selected vBulletin Modifications and child forums of it, and used the keyword "hidden", and got this:
https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/search.php?searchid=4746909
10 results... None of the ones you have posted up...

I'm not saying it sucks, but one of vBulletin's most supremely useful recent additions was the ability to search threads/posts from the search dropdown. Now it's gone again. :(

hehe always makes me laugh when I hear things like that.
Tell you what, go find an old ubb forum (ubb.classic) and try searching all the forums at one time. You'll be redirected multiple times as each forum is searched one by one...assuming the request doesn't time out first! After your ten minute wait maybe you'll have some vaild results, if not you get to do it all over again. ;)

Oh god, I remember visiting a forum that had that software... I think it still does ;)

for a website that work as a repository of tools, the most useful content to search in is the first post of each thread... this is where the tools are described... would be just good to be able to narrow our search with "hack description only", or something similar... so we search only firstpost everywhere...
it is useless to use tags here... post-index do the same!

I never had a problem with searching on vb.org in the old hack database but since the upgrade if i know exactly the name of the hack, i find it easiest just type it in google and google will bring it up first result every time so far.
