Hello,
My vbulletin version is currently 3.6.1
I am hoping to soon update to the latest version but I have one quick question.
I have lots of custom hacks installed, would updating to the latest version cause any problems with the hacks or even the forum itself or is it a simple and easy upgrade?
Thanks in advance.

Read here, http://www.vbulletin.com/forum/showthread.php?t=221907
Also if you use vb advance you will need to do the following edits located in this thread.

If your custom hack is in a php file you will have to re-apply that hack.
If your custom hack is in the templates, you may have to revert that template in which case you would need to re-apply those hacks as well.
Most, if not all, hacks that were applied in 3.6.1 should work with 3.6.5... hope that helps.

From 3.6.4 to 3.6.5 there were no template changes. But from 3.6.1 to 3.6.5 there definately is template changes.
