I was wondering if you guys all use Dedicated Servers or if some of you just got a Shared Server?

Currently I'm on a VPS. We had a dozen dedicated servers over the years and although we still use dedicated for backup we chose to stay on a managed VPS just in case we suffer an attack while myself or my partner is away.

Since this thread is about hosting, what we offer (to our hostees) is cheap accounts will all the bells and whistles. Our lowest is $2.50/month for 150 mb space and unlimited databases/features, as well as free website/vbulletin/cms installation/help.

My own database is around 400 mb at the moment.

Finally someone who is mentioning that $5 deal. I've heard so many good things about $5 but it's all in Articles. Could you tell me your experience with that $5 deal @ Site5? Or anyone else who got the same hosting. I am really thinking of moving to Site5 and take that $5 deal but I want to know how it is with the speed of your forum, support, bandwidth (they offer a huge amount per month but is there a catch?) and other usefull information. Could you do that for me?

Thanks in advance.

Been with site5 over a year or so now. Had a period of down times while they changed raids and deployed flashback (which is frikkin amazing, go read up on it, it's only available with site5) and generally am very happy with everything. I run around 100 sites with them, most of them database heavy.

I have 2 Forums, kartingextra.com and mikafanclub.com with them. The mika site is growing rapidly as the artist is at number 1 in the singles and albums charts and has been for a few weeks. Aside from getting a database max connections issue for about 1 min every few days it seems just fine, nothing a custom database error page cant handle :) The only down side is when you pull a backup of your database down from the server it can close the site during the download, though they do offer to make the backup for you if this happens, though once again, for the sake of 30 seconds or so it doesn't really matter, at worse, close the site during a back up, that's not bad practice anyway :)

So in short, been with them long, run lots of stuff, very happy with them :)

Dave

Many thanks for the quick response itrends. I red about that Flashback thingy, sounds indeed amazing. Btw, about the mysql databases, is there a max size of a database? I also red that while you have 1TB of bandwidth every month you have to do something when you reach an amount of bandwidth to get more? Sorry to sound so fague but I hope you understand my question hehe.

If you reach 1TB a month you really should be making enough cash to pay for some UBER hosting by that point ;)

Oh, and I don't think there is a maximum size for sql. if there is, I have not hit it yet.

Thanks for the response mate. What I was actually meaning to say with the monthly traffic is that some webhosting provider say that you have for example 1TB/month but in real you have to send them an email once you got to the 100GB bandwidth and they will give you 100GB extra. Not that it is such a big deal but I'm always thinking that when there's one detail there are more hehe. I'm really interested in the bandwidth coz my site got a huge amount of downloads (all legal ones ofcourse). At this moment I got 4.8GB of downloads so this will take up some bandwidth. One file is 47MB big and has already been downloaded 13,000 times (it's been added on 5 feb 2007). That is already over 500GB of bandwidth if my math is correct hehe.

That there isn't a maximum size for sql is a good thing. Not that I need it at the moment. My db is 70mb big (I have no clue if that's nothing or a lot or in between).

Anyway, I think you've convinced me! Site5 here I come hehe.

Not really the cheapest Dutch host I've seen lol. If you're Dutch you might want to check out Flexwebhosting.nl. For ?40 you get 500mb webspace and 10gb bandwidth per month. On your host you have to pay ?150 to get 500mb webspace and 4.5gb bandwidth per month. I've been with Flexwebhosting for over 3 years now. They are very friendly and respond quickly to emails. They are especially awesome when you host a forum. I run a big forum and had never any downtime or mysql errors. Their wait_timeout is 28800, max_user_connections is 0 (unlimited) and max_connections is 100. Their servers are also very fast.

You just might wanna look into it.

Do you might asking me what your site url is? I've taken a look at their website and I just don't like the fact that the mysql database got a 100mb limit on it. My database is already 81mb and my forum is only a year old. Btw, could you perhaps look what the mysql settings are? wait_timeout, max_connections and max_user_connections? Cheers...

The dedicated servers are database quota free, and you can adjust such things yourself in the control panel.

My forum was originally hosted on Dreamhost, but they aren't a good choice if you're running vBulletin. I moved to asmallorange a few days ago and I'm really glad I did.

I'm using the medium package, $10 a month 1gb disk space, 25gb bandwith.

I host my forum(s) on shared hosting accounts on my own servers at Server Planet, LLC (http://www.server-planet.com). If I wasn't hosting on my own servers I'd go with some other small-time host, as I think they tend to be better about not overloading their servers to make a buck.
