Application status check

Not sure if it's better done in other platform but here goes

Users given id and password will be able to seach for their application status via an html page
The database can be mysql, or spreadsheet which can be easily edited, updated.

I'm not familiar with asp or the likes so I would appreciate the input or pointers from the experts here.

Some more info. Hopefully someone can point me to some mod already made

We have a separate system where the students apply online, send letter of recommendation, etc...but there is no way for the students to keep track of the application decision. They only see if the application material is received or not.

I was looking around and most of the application status system use ASP/PHP, etc with a front end, database back end.

I'm trying to avoid that and use whatever I can from Vbulletin

Ideally, I would like to have a html page for the students to enter ID/pass and the page will display the status of their admission (Accepted, Rejected, being reviewed, etc...)

Am I being offtrack?

This can be done a few ways. Probably the easiest one would be to have three usergroups (or one usergroup and an admin editable only profile field) which determine the status (ie approved, pending, or declined). Then have a custom page built into vB where the user can log in and their status will be displayed on the page using a series of conditionals. Using usergroup permissions you will be able to deny all access to the forums, or just have a forum where they can only view their own threads for any queries.

I never thought of the solution this way. Probably I never done it before ;)

1) The 3 usergroups idea is great. I would love them to log in and see the message only, no other area of the forum. Where should I learn about custom page and VB conditionals
2) If I create an admin editable profile field, do i have to to assign someone Admin to do that since I won't be the person manually enter info.
