This plugin is not currently available for vBulletin 3.7.x. Several users have reported serious incompatibilities, and we would not suggest attempting to install it on a forum running 3.7.x at this time.

Foreward

Awhile back, two visionaries by the names of Sal Collaziano and George B realized that a Digg-like system for forums could be highly beneficial. Kudos to those two for their understanding that by working together, we can all benefit.

What is Synergy?

How often does this happen to you? You or a member write a great thread, Google indexes it a week later, but it is buried in the search results so the masses never end up reading it. Frustrating, isn't it? Zoints solves this by taking a system like Digg, then integrating and mirroring in across all forums in a manner that allows great threads to be read by the masses. Synergy is designed to bring you more traffic and inspire your members to create higher quality content in order to obtain "Top Author" status.

Demos (with forums like these using Synergy, you're sure to get some traffic)

You'll notice all the demos look virtually the same except for the skins. This is due to the system mirroring itself across the forums. When a link is clicked, it takes the reader to the originating forum.

How Synergy Works

You have a lot of high quality threads on your forum. When you (or a trusted usergroup member you permission via the admincp options) decides a thread is worthy of Synergy, you select the "Add to Synergy" link as seen below.

During the next step, you write a short description for the thread and select which category it should go into.

Your thread is then added to a queue on your forum. Once every X hours, the top thread in your queue is added to Synergy.

When your thread is added to Synergy, the system distributes the link and description you wrote to all participating forums. If someone on any forum around the net clicks on your thread link, they are redirected back to your forum to the actual thread so they can read it. If people like your thread, they can vote on it which ranks it higher. Higher ranked threads, especially those that make it to the front page will in turn bring you more traffic.

Proof of Traffic

If you submit good content to Synergy that gets to the front page, you WILL get a lot of traffic. The following screenshot is from a small forum early in our testing. Guess which day it got a thread on the front page? :D

Installation

Installing Synergy is a quick and easy process. Should you happen to run into problems, Zoints support is available here, at http://network.zoints.com (our support forum) or via ticket at http://zoints.com/support.z

Step 1. Connect to your site via FTP and upload the contents of the "upload" folder as follows:

synergy.php to your forum root
/includes/synergy.php to /includes/
/includes/synergy.snoopy.php to /includes/
/includes/cron/synergy.cron.php to /includes/cron/
/images/zoints_synergy.png to /images/

Step 2. Browse to your vBulletin admin control panel and select "Plugins & Products" then "Manage Products". Import the product-synergy-(version).xml file

Step 3. Create a forum named "Synergy". It must be visible from your forum homepage to both members and guests. The description can be whatever you want.

Step 4. Browse to vBulletin options > Zoints Synergy options and configure the settings. If you have already registered your forum at zoints.com, skip to step 6.

Step 5. Register your forum with Zoints at http://zoints.com/forum.z

Step 6. Login to zoints.com with your forum account.

Step 7. Click on the forum token and authentication key links in vBulletin options > Zoints profile options and enter the corresponding values provided to you. Save.

That's it!


Upgrading

To upgrade, overwrite all files via FTP then import the new vBulletin product and select overwrite to "yes".

Frequently Asked Questions

Q. Does Synergy require use of other Zoints products?

A. No. Synergy is a completely separate application.


Q. My forum is about business. Why should I have categories about other topics?

A. First off, you can disable of few categories by default if you so desire. However, your members ARE interested in other topics and Synergy lets them read about them via your forum. Every link opens in a new window; your members never really leave your forum. Let's say there is a video game forum owner out there. That forum owner will have members who are interested in business who click through to read your content. And you will have members interested in video games who click through to read the gaming site's content. It works both ways and everyone benefits.


Q. I'm worried about linking to all those other forums, isn't that bad for SEO?

A. Links are redirects AND rel no followed. If a thread makes it to the front page, after 5 days with no more votes, it becomes a direct link as a reward to that forum.


Q. People are going to try and manipulate this system to get to the front page!

A. Probably. Our algorithm is built to learn and detect manipulation. Any forums found to be manipulating the system will be banned. It's in everyone's best interest to use this system in an ethical manner.


Q. Can you tell us about the algorithm? How are threads ordered?

A. Sorry, we cannot and will not comment on the algorithm. All we will say it that it will naturally become more sophisticated over time as the system evolves.


Q. What if a questionable thread is submitted?

A. If need be, you can remove threads from your forum via the "info" dropdown box. Or, each thread has a report button, please use it. Each report will be investigated, problem threads removed, and communities that violate the submission guidelines will be banned from the system.


Q. Why are threads redirected? Why aren't they direct links?

A. There are quite a few reasons. A few are: The redirects help us guard against manipulation of the system. As Synergy grows we can add a means to throttle traffic if a site starts to get sent too many visitors. Reduced bandwidth requirements

The following are pre-written threads you can use if you so desire. You're of course welcome to change the wording however you want.


Explanation thread for members

We've decided to try a new forum modification called Synergy. The idea is to submit good threads to the system so that people on other communities like ours can read them. Once a thread is mirrored to other forums, then people across the internet vote on which they feel are best. The best threads get to the front page which causes them to be read by even more people. If you author a lot of good threads, you might become well known across forums as a "Top Author".

If you read a thread you like on Synergy, simply click on the vote link next to it. Vote totals are tallied across all forums and updated about once a minute. Keep in mind that threads aren't always ordered by votes because the Synergy algorithm takes a lot of factors into account when ranking a thread. But votes are very important, so vote!

There are a variety of thread categories that cover pretty much everything you might be interested in.

If there are categories you're NOT interested in, simply select the options link as shown below.

After selecting the options link, you'll be taken to the screen shown below. Unchecking boxes next to categories you're not interested in will stop them from showing. If you aren't interested in threads from other forums, you can hide them with a single click.

If you author a thread that gets to the front page of Synergy, then you get one point. The top authors of threads from around the internet are listed as seen below. Create great threads and become well known!

By default, Synergy shows you the most popular threads. At the top, you can change the sorting options so that you see the newest submitted threads to the system.

If you find a thread on our forum you think would be good to add to Synergy, simple click on the https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/external/2007/01/1.png in the postbit of the first post in the thread. That will take you to a submission screen where you write a short description. Once you submit that, it will go into a moderation queue for us to approve (or deny). Your help finding the best threads to submit is appreciated! Let's show the rest of the internet how good our community is.

How to submit a thread to Synergy

Step 1.

Go to the specific thread you want to add to Synergy, click on the thread tools dropdown menu, and select "Add to Synergy Queue"

Step 2.

You will then be taken the screen shown below. The thread url and title will already be there, you just have to write a short description (please check your spelling!) and select the proper category for the thread.

Step 2.

Once you submit the thread, it is added to the queue. Every x hours (it changes), the top thread from the queue will be added to the global system. You can edit, delete, or change the order of the threads on this screen.

I installed this on Automodding.com last night and can already see awesome results. With only 2 theads on the main page our traffic stats have jumped tremendously.

I installed last night (28th) and got a bit of a jump in traffic but today with more exposure our traffic is almost 3 times our average with about 4 hours left for today's stats to keep going up.

Mixing football with what I'm sure will be a heavily US influenced category with American Football, Baseball, Basketball, etc might not work that great for us. Having an issue. Installed Zoints and created the forum. The forum, called synergy at www.potatowned.com is obviously going to the wrong place. When you click on it, it goes to http://www.potatowned.com/forumdisplay.php?f=18 which is a broken link. Any ideas? I'm at a loss on this one...

This is absolutely awesome. If I didn't have such a niche forum, I would be totally installing this. I would love a 'digg' style system that was local though, so users can vote up their fav threads in a similar way.

Alleria is full of collaboratively written stories and so on, which would not fit in the majority of those categories. I really need something like

Horror
Romance
Action

etc etc, which users can nominate local threads to, and see in a similar system.

Please note this is not a feature request for this, as I know it is to drive traffic, but it is not entirely suitable for our community, and I would love a 'local' version of synergy.

Not right now. However, we would love to expand to other languages. It all depends on how successful this system is. If lots of people install it and lots of other language boards want it, then we'll naturally add additional languages. For purposes of development efficiency, we couldn't add multi-language suport from the start though.

No, sorry.

As for those of you requesting a local variant, I respect and understand that desire. However, that's not what Zoints is about. Our vision is to bring communities together in a mutually beneficial manner. As can be seen by the traffic people are already getting from this modification, that is happening. And that doesn't take into account the long term SEO benefits people who get threads to the front page will receive. Point being, we do not plan a local variant.

With that said, every forum has their own personal category and members can choose to only show threads from your forum if they so desire. The options on this are pretty powerful and allow all kinds of configuration.

No, your members do not get posted on Zoints.com. The reason for the registration is mods like Synergy require a unique token and authentication key. Because of the data transfer, we have to know who is sending what and ensure it is done in a secure manner (for obvious reasons). The only way to do that is assign a unique authentication key and token during signup. Our mods that don't require secure data transmission don't require any signup.

b) Forum Home list appears to be based on Most Popular. Is there a way to change it to Newest?

c) Forum display by Most Popular doesn't seem to sort properly.

Why not let the admins create their own categories for example I can just put the forums at categories and let my members see it that way and others see threads the regular way so in all 2 categories you choose, one for your forum and one for the network..

Only the forum members will see what threads are from what forums(categories of the forum)

One of my mods has reported seeing this when she loads a page anywhere on the forum. She said if she refreshes, it goes away.

Why not let the admins create their own categories for example I can just put the forums at categories and let my members see it that way and others see threads the regular way so in all 2 categories you choose, one for your forum and one for the network..

Only the forum members will see what threads are from what forums(categories of the forum)

You have a GREAT site, but to be honest, I think the majority of people find your content a bit dry. I know I'm not going to click through to read a story about credit repair or something along those lines. 1. Delete all the threads in your queue.

Still quietly voting for a local, customisable version. I need a digg like system for rating collaborative stories that my members write. While many of them are great, I do not think they fit in any of the synergy categories, and I also prevent 'controversial' debates on my site, as we are limited to writing, specifically in a fantasy genre.

So the categories I need for these 'dugg collaborative stories' are - Romance, Action, Dark, Intrigue, Comedy, Noir

And so on.

Otherwise, looking good! Would probably install if my board had a more general audience!

First of all my forum inst english, then incoming and outgoing threads wont be interesting for anyone.

I havent any ads to respect my visitors and i pay the forum server and a counter-strike server by donations, then i dont want to have threads of other forums that can be viewed as ads.

I'm having the same problem on my forum in that I'm submitting threads directly into the approved queue, and nothing is happening. The threads have stayed there for about 16 hours now... and the front page of Synergy (which is here (http://www.hybrid-gamers.com/forums/synergy.php?) for me) is completely blank.

I took a look in the "Scheduled Tasks" section in the Admin CP, and there's a Synergy task on there.

I tried updating this, and currently get:

I had synergy installed from the first day it was released. I believed in DChapman, as he had sufficiently convinced me on Zoints through TheAdminZone.com. I heavily promoted the use of synergy through out my forums and supported it on other admin forums as I saw an immediate effect in my stats as far as referring websites and unique users.

I have the #1 top author on Synergy, as well as many in the top 20. As of 2 days ago, we were banned for an unexplained reason. The reason isn't so much the problem, it was the complete lack of customer service provided by the Zoints team. See, we were not informed of the banning. We were simply banned. The members start emailing my staff and my staff starts calling me asking me what is going on, and I have to offer up the "Hell if I know" response as I was away on business and had not received any kind of warning or email informing me of this action. So now, I have to explain to my members that our forum is no longer welcome on the synergy lists and that they need not waste their time browsing the system, as votes are no longer accepted from our forum.

My main reason I am posting this is not to +++++ or complain, they have a zero tolerance policy and will not re-institute a banned forum, my point is to inform other forum owners that they should consider this when they make the choice to download and install or not. While they can sell you on their product just fine, when it comes down to providing even the smallest courtesy as an email, or warning to allow you to adjust what ever infraction has caused a negative light on your forum, they lack and in a serious way.

I am frankly shocked and I will be removing all Zoints modifications from my forums. I do not appreciate the embarrassment of having to deal with my members and not have an answer to give them.

Synergy interconnects forums big time and you were taking advantage of other forums by not following the simple rules. Other forum owners count on us to uphold a quality standard otherwise this service is meaningless. Therefore, we have a zero tolerance policy and I make no apologies for that.

I agree that we could have communicated after the fact a bit better. We'll look into sending a "Thank you for using Synergy, breaking the rules, and degrading the quality of the service. Best of luck to you, but you've been banned".

Well I can promise you that the rules were not broken on purpose in any malicious attempt to some how take advantage of anybody. As far as that goes, I have no idea what rules were broken because that was never communicated to me. My moderators simply supplied threads which were posted on my site and follow my site's topic and generate discussion. If there are specific topics that you do not want posted on your system, i.e gossip, since they don't stand up to your standards of "quality content" then specifically state that those particular topics are not allowed. Contrary to your belief that forum topics must be some groundbreaking, in depth topic - the average forum post is about as long as your response to me.

Your response here as you put it just shows that you lack the ability to work with users who sincerely attempt to support you and your products. But I digress, I've made my point and this is not a place to debate, I merely wanted to inform the other admins of your wonderful service abilities before they walked into something they wouldn't do to their worst members, even banned spammers get an email stating they were banned.

Synergy looked great, but I had to turn it off because of an error.

I use vbSEO and every link to a forum such as russophile.com/russian_recipes/ would take me to the synergy forum rather than the recipes forum. That URL should map to a URL like this one: https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/forumdisplay.php?f=194 Other URLS such as russophile.com/photoplog/ worked just fine as did thread displays. The only issue was the forum views. Let me know if you have any ideas how to fis it because I really liksed the synergy plug in.

If anyone ever has trouble registering, the fastest way to get that resolved and your forum in the Synergy network is to open a ticket up at network.zoints.com. Just FYI as I know a few have had troubles with this.

Is there any way to remove the synergy forum from the archive???

It makes tons of blank pages in there and it's annoying.

I am not aware of a way to remove Synergy from the archives, but I do know the engineers realize this is a pretty big bug so hopefully it will be corrected with the next release.

Clicked un-install .. last thread added to Synergy was 02-02-2007 04:18 PM.

Synergy isn't near as active as it could be, but I really think that must of been an error you saw. For instance if you click on the newest links section, you would see that all links have been added in August.

I am now fully registered and setup.

However, I have a question. Why on earth did I make a forum section call "Synergy" on my site? I'm not getting why or what its used for.
The forum called Synergy is to integrate you and your forum into the content sharing network that is Zoints. It's a system that works with forums scratching one another's backs if you will; ala a forum member from elsewhere may see a thread on Synergy that interests him from your site, just like a member from your site could see a thread elsewhere that interests him and checks it out, it's a give and take system with forums working with each other to showcase their content versus letting it get buried.

Hmmm, I have never seen something like that with Synergy but I believe your ticket was picked up by one of our engineers at network.zoints.com so hopefully they can figure that out with you rpainter.

For people experiencing errors... disable all hacks and slowly enable them and test synergy and when you discover the hack that is conflicting let the staff know, so they can look into a fix for all the people who use that mod.

Once you've uploaded the files, installed the product through the Product Manager, created a forum entitled Synergy, you then need to go vB Options in your Admin CP, Zoints Synergy Options and then configure the settings there. If you haven't already, you will also need to register your forum here:
http://zoints.com/forum.z
to get your forum key and token.

Let me know if you are still having trouble, should that not work.

And you are absolutely correct, if you enjoy Synergy and want to see more benefits for your forum, the best way to see that happen is for more forums to join up and share content with one another. Your members will be more interested in Synergy then and so will the members at the other Synergy forums and thus, everyone will benefit who is sharing content.

Yes it does Andy, I've seen Synergy running on both 3.67 and 3.68 versions of vBulletin.

I would agree that some of the content submitted is probably not the most needed additions to Synergy and probably not what other members really want to see. You can report threads, but I think some more functionality would be needed to really improve the system.

Hi Richie, did you you fill out the token and authorization key in the vB Admin CP (that you got from Zoints)? And if you click on Synergy (from the forum index) you should go to synergy.php

I really do not know how much traffic increase people are getting from Synergy to be honest, but we have certainly talked about how to deal with poor content. Right now we are focusing on Zoints Local's upcoming release, but we do see Synergy as a big part of our future and would like to optimize it as it is not perfect.

Thanks for the compliment class101, we're glad that some can see why this is such a cool idea. If more shared in that process, Synergy would really be ever more beneficial to those who use it.

As for your question, I am a bit unsure about what you are asking, but we do support it here on this thread, at our support forums (http://network.zoints.com) and through our ticket system (http://zoints.com/support.z). As for another version, the one you see here is the last released version of Zoints Synergy. If that did not address your question, please clarify it further and I'll try again.

Have you tried running the manual cron? For some reason, some forums seem to have this problem and I really don't know how to explain it, but perhaps running the cron will jumpstart it.

One small issue in the synergy forum I created everything works great except that the it seems random in the display instead of the top voted threads and the other issue is when click on Top Threads on the bottom right it errors out to page can not be found. The one below for new threads works just fine.

Hi root,

The intention of Synergy is not for a local community, but for communities together to successively share their content and get more exposure for their threads of interest. There is at least one product here at vbulletin.org (I believe it is only for 3.7+ however) that is a more simple +/- thread and post rating system that is for JUST your forum, I also know of a paid modification that works on 3.6x (if interested, PM me and I'll send you the link.)

Synergy really isn't a website. The content on it might one day be used in such a manner, but it's not that way right now. In concept, in terms of voting for good threads/content, it is similar to DIGG. It differs however in the sense that the content is shared on forums and not on a central site like DIGG. Let's look at a hypothetical situation:

Suppose site A,B, and C have Synergy installed.
A submits a thread to Synergy.
The thread appears on the Synergy forum for all forums apart of Synergy (when you install Synergy, you created one forum for Synergy to reside in), the members from those other forums can then view and read that thread, rate it and possibly join to comment at that site. The strength (or potential strength) lies in the forums. The content remains on your site, to discuss the content the members have to go to your site, Synergy merely acts as a way for the content to be shared between A, B and C... hopefully increasing the guest views all three forums get for their content. So unlike a DIGG, we hope that all forums can see a benefit from Synergy unlike a DIGG submission where they will be increased traffic, but discussion will stay on DIGG.

I went to the link and poked around, seems that people are having problems with Synergy and Vbulletin 3.7.

If you have 3.7 for God's sake, do not install this mod. It totally crashed my forum, I can't even open the tools.php file to try to fix it.

Not sure what I will do.

Thank you for bringing this to our attention, and I apologize that you've had this trouble. We are researching this issue, and attempting to determine the cause - it's unclear at this point if it's directly caused by Synergy, a result of a conflict with something unique to your site or simply a case of coincidental corruption. At this point, other users have reported problems with the plugin on 3.7.x, but nobody else has encountered as serious an issue as this.

In any case, I'm adding a warning to this plugin that there are known incompatibilities and that we would advise against attempting to install on 3.7.x forums.
