Do you think it could be punished by search engines for being too long? What if I use VBSEO? Do you think that could get a penalty for the site?

no, it should not be a factor. You have a cool subject for your forum, it should be successful. You should get rid of that irritating pop-up that follows you around, some people (like me) will not join any site that causes pop-ups like that (even if they are gone when one registers).
