View Full Version : Flashing 'New PM' Message

When I get a new PM, there is a flashing red message over the PM status bit making up the right hand side of the navigation bar.

Is there really any need for this? Members can already specify whether or not to have a popup box display when they have new messages, and the bold 'Unread 1' (or 2, or whatever) is noticeable enough. Also, the message continues displaying when you read the new PM, which can be really distracting (which I know is unavoidable, but it wouldn't happen if it weren't there).

Yes there is a need for it - many members (including me) find it very useful - and would miss PM's otherwise (I often miss them for days on sites that have no visual indication). I loath script pop-ups.

I love it, and I really hate the popup script. I have very good eyes, but I will miss it every time unless there is some huge flashing warning. With hundreds of links on each page, why would my eyes pick that one up when it looks like all of the others?

I wouldn't be without it. Admittedly it's been bugging me for the last 5 months because I have a PM I'm keeping unread till I've finished with it, but it's very useful. In fact sometimes it simply serves to remind me which site I'm on!

I love it, have to post and show it some love :)

It makes me read my PM's since it won't STOP BLINKING :D

Wow, i asked this question yesterday...but haven't got the answer

I think the flashing PM is really cool. I was curious of what kind of mod this is based on. I'd like to install one on my forum.

Thanks

huh? I've been here over 3 years and it has always been here in that time. It's not something to do with changes in staff recently.

Here's a simple solution. Insert something like "Pm me for support, heck, PM me if life is getting you down" and you can gurrantee that you'll get no pms. Everything else simply fails when you don't want constant pming. :surprised:

*looks at the 13 unanwsered pms waiting* :cross-eyed:

Only 13 Shelley? I'll swap for yours then ;) I actually cannot remember the last time I had no unread PM's :knockedout:

I meant that I've noticed a lot of things getting fixed and less errors on the site. ;)

Actually I think vBulletin should drop off the JS pop-up window in future releases for the sake of a better one. Maybe AJAXed pop-up windows that don't get blocked by ad/pop-up blockers.

Flashing text or beeping sound is fine too.

I found it that annoying that I have simply turned off getting new pm's. :) Much better now :)

I find it very useful, but I agree it could be optional. It's tempting to make a mod for it when I have some time, but I'm too busy :'(

Yes it's annoying and looks stupid.

Nevermind, you'll only have to put up with it for a few more days, I'm sure you'll cope. ;)
