vBonjour

Easy Customizable Portal System

Brought to you by www.peterska2.co.uk (http://www.peterska2.co.uk)

Welcome to the launch of vBonjour. This is the base package which is required for all installations of this system.

What is vBonjour?
vBonjour is an alternative to vBAdvanced. It is an easy to install, modular portal system designed as a gateway to your site.

Why vBonjour?
This is pretty simple really. As the front page is the first thing that your visitors see, it is a welcome page. The first few names that were thought of were either very boring, or far too long winded and not at all catchy.

This is a base package. What is included?
The base package includes a news feature from up to two forums. The news from the first forum will be displayed first, followed by the news from the second forum. It also includes the left and right columns which can be activated or deactivated via some simple settings in the ACP. These columns can be customised without using any of the Add On Modules, or Add On Modules can be installed to expand on the functionality.

Why is it so modular?
vBonjour is extremely modular to allow for maximum customization of the page. The idea is to make it as easy as possible to install the items that you want to have included, and not have anything which you would be simply turning off. By using a modular method it means that every site can easily achieve their own custom portal without having to know any coding.

I want to add something that isn't already included. How do I go about this?
vBonjour makes use of the plugin system and includes it's own hooks. This allows easy devlopment of additional Add Ons and maximum flexability.

What about the ACP? Is it really complicated?
Unlike other systems, almost all the settings for vBonjour are collected in one setting group in the vBOptions. Because you only install what you want to use, you don't need to have lots of settings. Anything which does not use settings in the Portal settings group is highlighted in the documentation for that Add On.

Ok, so where are the screen shots?
Why have screen shots when you can have a live demo?
The demo is available at www.peterska2.co.uk (http://www.peterska2.co.uk)

What versions of vBulletin does vBonjour work with?
vBonjour will work with vBulletin 3.6.0 and above. Support for sites running versions earlier than 3.6.0 will not be given.

Contributers to the base system: christianb

I hope that you like this system. Please remember to mark it as installed to recieve notification of updates and support. Support will only be provided to those who have clicked install.

It's completely modular and so you don't have all the hassle with complicated settings and trying to figure out what you want to use because you just install the add ons that you want and not the ones that you don't.

Installed, AGAIN. This is pretty cool, did you do this at the same time or over a period of time and then release it at once?

I've been working on it for a few months but it was just a static package with no flexability at all. I thought about it on Friday and decided that it could be done as a modular system, so I've spent most of the weekend and all day today coding it.

Can you make vBonjour be part of vB pages (or vB part of vBonjour)?

Shana
12-11-2006, 10:16 PM
Ah, cool. Well, I installed it, but in the modules it says:

In your portal_left_column or portal_right_column template add $stats where
you wish to have your Statistics blocks appear. Unfortunatley these cannot be
separated in this release.

However, I cannot find the vBOptions -> Portal Settings page. Do you mean under Style Manager -> SKIN -> Portal Templates?

I have absolutely no idea what vB Pages is, but I'll look into it later in the week and see what I can come up with.

It's one of the setting groups in the main settings area. It should be right at the bottom of the list (or close to it).

To make the change identified though, you need the style manager.

Where exactly would you put the $navigation in

<if condition="$vboptions[portal_left_column]">
<td width="160" valign="top">
</td>
<td width="10">&nbsp;</td>
</if>

to make it be an actual left column?

How is this better than vBAdvanced?

peterska2

How is this better than vBAdvanced?

It is built with simplicity in mind. Where vBAdvanced has pages and pages of settings and most people go through and turn a lot of things off, this has just one place for settings because you only install what you want to use.

If you don't want to show WOL, then you don't have to try and find a setting or 6 buried deep somewhere, you just don't install that bit.

This easy install the bits you want and not the bits you don't makes it a simple to use system and highly customizable for each individual site.

The only default installation is the basic news module. After that everything else is at the discretion of the site admin and what is best suited for their site as well as displayed exactly how you want it.

Easier to turn things OFF than install loads and loads of products !?

This allows BB Codes.

The items on the live portal all include BB Code in one form or another. HTML Username Markup is also fully operational, although this is not included on the demo version.

My one question..

Does it allow for more then one page with each page using different news forums?

That's the big bonus of vbadvanced to me, and if your product could do similiar I would definately give it a go :)

1. Really need the possibility to enter different Boxes (more then in your Addon for 2 custom Contents) with own HTML Content from the AdminCP like it is possible at vBa.

2. Sure a RSS Feedsystem for external Feeds is a must have. Look here for a Example : Customizable RSS feed module (http://www.vbadvanced.com/forum/showthread.php?t=13489&highlight=rss+feeds)

3. And can i move the Boxes from AdminCp wherever i like (left, center, right)?

someone asked me if i could help them understand how to install this portal... i am no coder... and peterska2 is best to ask for assistance, but... i did supply some instructions for the person who asked... and thought i would share them....

Step #1 - edit your portal.php file it should look something like this.....

/home/this is your root folder name/public_html/'

Step#2 change the name of the portal.php to index.php

Step#3 change the name of your index.php (on the server-side) (your forum index.php, to forum.php)

step#4 go to forum home options in your admincp and change the index to forum

step#5 go to your admincp plugins and products /manage products and upload your xml file that is in your portal directory

after you do this... your hack is installed...

refresh your screen and look under your VBulletin Options for portal. set up which forum will be your news for the portal.... and the other stuff...

the work starts now.......

in your styles and templates look for the portal templates you primarily want to work with the left and right columns.... in the addons that come with portal hack are instructions.. read them...

you are looking for code snippets that have $who_has_posted this code in it... each addon will have an instructions document.. and in that document you will find the code to paste.... either in your left or right column..
i suggest as you are pasting the snippets... dont try to put a <br> after a snippet
just...
$who_has_posted
$who_has_posted
$who_has_posted

stack the different snippets this way and all will be well...

good luck.. im going to bed!!

Yes, change the character setting in the options from 250 to what ever you want. I have mine set to 25000 and it displays the full post. You may need to experiement with this setting until you find one that works best for you.

Can this be installed in /root or does it need to go in the root/forum directory?

Yes, it can be installed in root or in the forum directory. Instructions for both are in the instructions.txt file included in the zip.

3. And can i move the Boxes from AdminCp wherever i like (left, center, right)?

1. How many boxes are we talking about? I can do some additional boxes in another plugin if required.

2. This is currently in an early development stage.

3. All movement is done via the style manager. This may change in future editions, but at the moment the style manager is the most efficient way of doing it hence that method.

Check the instructions and edit the portal.php file accordingly. There are comments in the php file for where to edit (you aren't running in the same place as my test board so it won't find it ;)) and instructions in the txt file on an easy way to get your forum path from the ACP

peterska2
12-13-2006, 05:30 PM
It would lose the main feature of flexability if it was done that way Allan. The original alpha version was all in one file and making any changes to it was a complete nightmare. Using Add Ons makes it a lot easier to manage and for each site to setup easily to their requirements.

I am intrigued. But, as not a coder, let me as a dumb question or two.

this is sounding really interesting...

can you tell me more about the permission settings? is it as granular as vbadvanced?

more specifically do you have the option to pick a group, and then say what pages that group can see, in addition to picking a page and seeing what groups have permission to it?

also any idea when the rss feeds will come into play? that's something i've really been looking to add to my site...

peterska2
12-14-2006, 09:22 PM
At the moment, it is a case of apart from the guest message and member message (for obvious reasons included in their titles) everything is visible to everyone. There is also only one page involved at the moment.

The first of the RSS Add Ons has just been released, and more are in development. Once this week is out of the way then development will be back to being full steam ahead and more Add Ons will become available as quickly as I can get them coded.

CoreIssue
12-14-2006, 10:29 PM
I was able to install the shout on the forum fully and get the it partially installed, 100% width, on the Portal.

But, it would require recoding to get the smilies, Archive and font color and face showing and working correctly.

Great idea, but I will wait until this gets a bit more advanced, or has some more blocks developed for it.

Just too much work for the return on needs for my site.

But great idea and coming along very nicely.

For info, to get the ShoutBox Templates at 100% I copied them all over onto the Portal Template, not the left or right.

I will be watching this one!

peterska2
12-14-2006, 10:31 PM
I'm going to be doing some research into some items such as the shoutbox to see how they would integrate into vBonjour over the next week or so, so keep watching out, because as soon as I crack it, something will be released.

IMO all the add-ons should be in the same product. They can easily be turned on/off by going to the Plugin Manager. Also the main portal.php file has some issues:

define('NO_REGISTER_GLOBALS', 1); // this is no longer used
there is no portal_articlelist template
if (forumid1) { // this is missing the $ on the variable
if (forumid2) { // this is missing the $ on the variable
$news['pagetext'] = $parser->do_parse($news['pagetext'], 1, 1, 1, 1); // this is set to parse HTML
these should be initialized: $currentsection, $portal_articlebit, $portal_left_column, $portal_right_column
$getnews1 and $getnews2 are basically the same query so try WHERE t.forumid IN ($forumid1,$forumid2)
vB doesn't store slashes so stripslashes is not needed
look into strip_tags, htmlspecialchars_uni, or use title_clean if available instead of the preg_replace regexp
is there a need to GLOBAL $parser; for something
what setting is this: $vbulletin->options['vbcms_totalrows']
$rownum serves no point as the query already has a limit
use $navbits[''] = 'Portal'; not with $parent and phrase the word Portal
eval('$portal_articlelist .= "' . fetch_template('PORTAL') . '";'); // this serves no purpose

The attached is an untested revision of the portal.php file, though it may need tweaks or fixes as well because it's untested, so it's up to you to test. Hope it helps. :)

Is there a way to make it so that the news functions can pull from more than just 2 forums? (I have a category with 4 forums but I want to display all 4 of them as news posts, don't ask me why)

And is there anyway to get the combination to alternate back and forth? Not just, first forum news posts then second forums news posts, I'm talking first forum news post, then second, then first, or if more are involved (up to for, first forum news post, second forum news post, third forum news post, fourth forum news post, first forum news posts, etc.)

Any info or help on this would be great :).

Peter,
I'm looking forward to installing this on my live site in a week or so. I've been looking at VB CMPS for a while but never installed it or know what VBadvanced offers that you do not.

1) I assume your mod will use the default skin of the forum ? Will the header banner from the forum be on the front page ? I'm looking for something like we have here on Vb.org

2)Do you have mini calendar modules ? Current poll ? Today birthday ?

3) I mostly need latest 10 thread modules, mini-calendar, news, events, etc

thanks

I don't know if you have a "module request" thread or something anywhere, in fact I should probably search from it, but at the moment don't have time. But I'm sure a plethora of people here would love to see a Paypal module. Including a donate page (and maybe even a goal system, where you set a goal and it displays amount until goal met with a bar or something). Just something to think about, but I don't expect it, at least not until you've worked out the bugs and whatnot that are of more pressing issues ;).

Is there anyway to get the blocks to show up on the forum pages? ie index, view forum, view topic?

Thanks

how about a calendar addon as well as a random v3arcade game addon, a quick moderation addon? :)

and also an avatar of the user who posted news would be nice, just like in the vbadvanced.

I have installed the portal.php file in the root of my site and the forum of course is in the forum folder. During setup it was sort of implied to do this... Now I'm having issues getting the navigation links to work.

They're missing the /forum/ in the code. I figured out how to update the image links by just putting the /forum/ infront of the image url's. but can't seem to figure out where the Nav bar information is stored?

Any clues for a newbie?

Thanks
Matthew

I have this installed outside of the forums, in the root dir

mjname

IF YOU'RE INSTALLING OUTSIDE OF THE FORUM DIRECTORY?

You may have to edit these files in Templates. Header, Navbar, footer and if your forum is in a directory called forum then you need to put this into the code, '/forum/'. Don't put in the 'quote'. I did a search .php through out these pages here are some examples.

First I went to Styles & Templates>Styles Manager>Edit Templates

I edited these files Footer, Header, & Navigation & Breadcrumb Templates> Navbar

In these files I did a search for .php and found code that looked like this
<a href="$vboptions[forumhome].php$session[sessionurl_q]">
and I added the '/forum/' to it so it looked like this.
a href="/forum/$vboptions[forumhome].php$session[sessionurl_q]">

I also found code that looked like this:
<form action="login.php?do=login" and changed it to
<form action="/forum/login.php?do=login"

The beginning slash lets the server know that / is the reference to the root directory of the site regardless of the domain name. I'm hosted on NT I think so don't knwo if this is the case with Unix or Linux but can't image it not being.

I've clicked around a bit and it seems to have corrected my proplems.

I hope this helps, and I think this needs to be edited to some degree and included in the install file. I'm new to vBulletin and didn't even know what editing a template from the admincp was possible. I just bought it because it was pretty. I like pretty. :)

Also there needs to includded in the directions on how to edit the nav and block template modules, too. It might be obvious to the people who actually read the manual for vBulletin but it's really long and I haven't gotten to it yet.

Thanks
Matthew

The best way to get navbar links working all the way though is to add$vboptions[bburl]/to the start of all the links in there, including the forms for the login box and search box.

This is only needed if you have installed outseid the forum directory.

JamieLee2k

So what you are saying is it is easier to install if within the forums? Since there is no messing about

Your site path is /home/puremark/public_html

If your forums are in the site root then use that as your forum root, otherwise you need to add the directory in which they are located onto the end of there.

Updated to version 1.0.2

This update fixes the moderated posts issue.

To upgrade, upload portal.php overwriting your existing portal.php file (probably renamed to index.php on your site) making sure you edit the forumpath in the file again. The reimport the product.

Looking at portal.php I could see a difference from Getnews 1 & Getnews 2

Get News 2 looks like this
if (forumid2) {
$getnews2 = $db->query_read("

LEFT OUTER JOIN " . TABLE_PREFIX . "post AS post ON post.postid = t.firstpostid WHERE t.forumid = " . $forumid2 . " AND visible = 1

the very last bit is the problem
change it to t.visible = 1

That cured this error for me.

However I now have the left sidebox displaying full page width. Then the news items and then the right side box all full width.
Any ideas?

Your edits to your columns are in the wrong place.

It needs to be

<if condition="$vboptions[portal_left_column]">
<td width="160" valign="top">
$navigation
$who_has_posted

<td width="10">&nbsp;</td>

I am assuming just reload the new product file, or do we need to upload all the php files as well?

There isn't, but I'll get one taken later tonight when I'm on the other computer. In the meantime, to put it simply, have a look at, lets say, forum display options found in the vB options. Thats just one picked at random, but the entire minimalistic ACP is set in the vBOptions so it gives you an idea. The base system (ie the main portal with no add-on's) is a mere 6 settings in vBOptions, and once they are set you should never have any need to change them.

Yeah the portal deserves all appreciation .. great Job.

Only one issue this and all past portals have, can't optimize the portal page outside the forums folder, it's annoying to change all images in templates that might be used in the portal, or to have the CSS embed instead of linked, or even putting full URL of CSS images.

What's the solution to have the portal page outside the forum's folder, without doing those modifications?

No matter what you do it will require some sort of modification to a template somewhere. You could try just using a <base> (http://www.w3schools.com/tags/tag_base.asp) directive in your headinclude. Not sure what the overall effect would be but I really can't foresee any problems. It simply makes relative links into absolute links.

At this moment I have my board in a subdirectory say '/forum'. On the main index is a page, but I do not want to use it anymore and want to use the portal instead.

It's working guys, to actually make the portal work without so many mods on the template is using the <base> directive as suggested earlier.

Insert right below the <head> in PORTAL template:
<base href="$vboptions[bburl]/" target="_self" />

* But a question goes to the coder, are these 2 lines at the end of portal.php correct?

eval('$portal_articlelist .= "' . fetch_template('PORTAL') . '";');
eval('print_output("' . fetch_template('PORTAL') . '");');
I think the first is useless?

adhari_com
02-01-2007, 05:56 PM
And I'm also suggesting using this code, instead of the current one and the reason is BBCode gets choped off creating an ugly view of the previewed latest topics, qouting the preview of the Tooltip of Forum Display, to display a stripped simple preview of the post:

$news['pagetext'] = strip_quotes($news['preview']);
$news['pagetext'] = htmlspecialchars_uni(fetch_censored_text(fetch_tri mmed_title(
strip_bbcode($news['preview'], false, true),
$charlimit
)));
$news['pagetext'] = nl2br($news['pagetext']);

Just a bit of info, if you wish to have your navbits reflect your vB title instead of vB title > Portal.

Open portal.php:
Find
$navbits = array();
$navbits[$parent] = 'Portal';

$navbits = construct_navbits($navbits);

Remove it completely, save and upload.

This will add a breadcrumb when viewing your forum.

Next open index.php (if you renamed opened the renamed file)
Find:
eval('$navbar = "' . fetch_template('navbar') . '";');

Above add:
$navbits = array();
$navbits[$parent] = 'Forum';

$navbits = construct_navbits($navbits);

Edit 'Forum' to whatever you wish.

Cheers

Love this hack. (Have marked it as installed, too.)

I've been occasionally having some problems with portal posts. This only happens with posts that include special formatting, so possibly it's just an issue with the code properly dealing with all possible cases. When this problem occurs the post body fragment is fine, but the post title includes text that should not be there.

Here is an example...

The title should read simply:

What Features Do You Like in banner exchanges?

However, it's reading as...

[/PHP] That is just an Example of Code so :-) Yeah, I still am working on it it's going to be very secure, which Is taking me the longest to fix for the password enc and dec type... Well just leave suggestions :-)" target="_blank">What Features Do You Like in banner exchanges?

For reference, the post causing this problem is...

Hello Everyone!!!

As some of you know I am currently working on a banner exchange script which is going good but had to scrap half of it, it wasn't loading fast enough. Just to let you know I have the total 5 Beta testers so far. Needing 5 More! For once i release the script, but anyways what I came here to post is what do you like or what do you think should be in a banner exchange, like special features, like

Paid Services -
Intergrated Support
3D Stats - Maybe in Flash or Something.
Live Stats,
Etc...

Please Post any Ideas as I am still working on this and would like to know what to create in this Script so I can rearange or reconfigure the MySql Database

But the Features are Including and Soon will include for all of the Script ownerz and Beta testers.

1.) Very Secure Script, For Example:

<?php

if( $_GET['ref'] != "$url"){
die("SORRY!!! Accessing the Page is Restricted only to $url");
}
else
{
include "./index.php?page=member_stats";
}

?>

That is just an Example of Code so :-)
Yeah, I still am working on it it's going to be
very secure, which Is taking me the longest to fix for the password
enc and dec type... Well just leave suggestions :-)

(Very minor addtional point, but just in case it matters, I should note that here at vbulletin.org, in the example post body above, the PHP Code block should be displaying "?>" at the very end, but it doesn't, although this works correctly on my forum. )

go to admin cp>>>vbulletin options>>forum home page options> and change the script name to forum instead of index.

Note: dont put forum.php, only forum without "php" at the end.

already did that.... this is what u get in the link above
actually, wasn't sure what i'm supposed to get, so i modified the .htaccess file to point to forum.php
but i guess that's not the point rite?

anyway, to see my problem now... goto www.computerforumz.com/index.php

i will modify the .htaccess file back once i get this problem sorted out.

This is a pretty nice mod. Thanks. A decent alternative to paying for vBadvanced just for a little homepage.

One question I have though, I notice in my news articles, someone posted a thread with a youtube clip, (we don't use the youtube vB plugin / tag, it's just the default embed html tag) but the video does not show up in the article on the portal page. Anyone know why this is?

Oh I see, you are doing a regex replace to remove the tags from the preview.. why is that?

My solution is to only remove tags if the preview is larger than the allowed number of characters. Then alter the template to change it so that the "preview" when you mouse over the thread title is not the full html. (Just remove this, or change it to $news['title'] ) Now youtube posts show correctly. (though who knows what other kidns of bugs allowing this html could introduce. hmm.)

Awesome mod. Thanks again! Clicked install...

Hi,

I have noticed that when members login through the portal, it doesn't seem to work.

You type in your login details then it gives you the "thanks for logging in confirmation" then it goes back to the portal and shows that they have not logged in :( All the other login areas are fine on my site, it's just the portal thats affected.

Any ideas on how to fix this?

Cheers.

Newbie here. Everything installed fine but I can't get my forum to display in the front page of my portal. I'm assuming it's something to do with adding code to the portal template. The nav item comes up fine but I can't find anything on displaying the forum 'wrapped' inside the portal.

If you click here you get my portal www.helixpedia.com (http://www.helixpedia.com) and here for my forum www.helixpedia.com/forum (http://www.helixpedia.com/forum)

It's a fresh vB install so the forum has only one test post.

Oh, I also have a wiki installed that I'd like the portal to wrap (www.helixpedia.com/wiki (http://www.helixpedia.com/wiki)) - is this possible with vBonjour

Any takers?

Cheers

Admin Control Panel > Forums & Moderators > Forum Manager - select the forum you wish to know the ID for, then look at the top of the window.

I have an issue with the left column showing above the center news column, and the title area of a news post is stretched vertically with the collapse button above views and replies.
