adding new buttons and background

Please if anyone can help, I've been reading almost all day here to no avail.

I need to know where to look to change and put new button icons to replace the old now with new (xmas ones) and I have a homemade background I like to add which I can't seem to do or add in the template main CSS, I'm still new in coding so It's a start any advice will go far with me in learning and remembering and perhaps one day pay back with helping others from my jorneys when I can.

to change the buttons you need to upload your X-mas buttons to your Images folder (or somewhere on your server you'll remember) and in your Skin you wanna change the buttons go into Style and templates in your ACP and then on the skin click on STYLE VARS

where its got the locations of your buttons (example /images/statusicon/) change it to wherever your buttons are located for example (/image/X-mas/Statusicon/).

Sorry I can't understand, I did this and all the icons were red x's in the xmas style.

Here is what I want to do and once I learn that's it I'll know how to do it but I had this done for me to get the forums up quick and I learning to do this stuff little by little.

Btw sorry if it's in the wrong forum and thanks very much for your reply, is there another way by HTLM maybe in the templates?

You will need to make the changes in the CSS if you want them on the background. For smaller changes such as adding an image in one place then you can do it in the templates using HTML.
