Currently active users - display the total without the list?

I think it's important to show to potential new users and advertisers how many users you have online. However, listing them all can slow the forums down.
Has anyone already written a hack which shows the number without listing them all? Maybe by doing a SELECT COUNT()?

u mean not show the actual users online? just find $activeusers in forumhome and delete it.

No, I mean not doing the actual database query. It's doing the query which slows down the home page.
