View Full Version : Templating News To "Slashdot" Style

We've just moved our site over from Dragonfly CMS to the latest vbulletin/vbadvanced and the major issue we're facing at the minute is that all of our front page news readers much prefered the commenting system we previously had.

For anyone unfamilar with it, it's pretty similar to slashdot's. The new article is at the top and below it is a very basic threaded comments systems.

What we have now is a moderated News Forum that links to the News modules and displays our news on the front page. However, when leaving comments it's just as if they're posting in the forums which just for that forum is something we don't want.

I'm sure this could be done with templating and strip a lot out of the template just for that forum but I'm not familar with the templating system yet and it'd be better to get this done ASAP.

If it's a more complicated than I'm imaging we'd be happy to pay whatever a fair price is for someone to help us out with this.

This may even all be possible already and I've just not found it it my searching yet.

Any help would be great.

Cheers

totally stripped with just the username and date and comment?

Just in one forum?

Are you using the horizontal or vertical postbit? (ie like here or like vBulletin.com)

Which version vBulletin are you using?

Latest vbulletin, 3.6.4 as we only just purchased it.

We're using the legacy postbit for the rest of our forums but using the horizontal one for this wouldn't be a problem.

It needs to be done just in our "News" forum that vbadvanced uses to get front page news from. The rest of our forums are fine to actually look like forums.

What we need is really similat to how slashdot (and phpnuke type sites) do their comments system but just for one forum.

The first post at the top and below it a very simple reply section.

Also is there any way to force users to just be able to use the hybrid display mode on just one forum?

ok, I'll upgrade my dev board shortly and sort something out for you.

Forcing the hybrid mode just for one forum would require some plugins (I think).

That's great.

Is it possible to put the Post Reply button underneath the article but before the first reply as well?

It shouldn't be a problem.

Leave it with me now and I'll finish it up all nice and tidy and get it released shortly.
