What does this hack do?
This hack allows you to add seasonal effects to your forumhome/entire forum to suit the time of year. The hack currently has:
Snow pixels
Snow Large Flake
Snow Small Flake
Bats
Ghosts
Witches
Fireworks Pixel
Fireworks Pixel 2
Fireworks Animation
Hearts
Heart Hug
New
Uncle Sam
Easter Basket

you need to upload the season folder to your /forums/ folder. add that to your install file.
also is there a way to make it where there are more falling items? maybe a dump every XX seconds or something?

In the season folder you will find a list of javascript files named 1 - 10.
Open 1/2 (depending if your using large / small flakes) and find:
var i, doc_width = 800, doc_height = 600;
and change the height to what you want to use.
Each script corresponds with the following:
0|Snow pixels
1|Snow Large Flake
2|Snow Small Flake
3|Bats
4|Ghosts
5|Witches
6|Fireworks Pixel
7|Fireworks Pixel 2
8|Fireworks Animation
9|Hearts
10|Heart Hug

At first I thought my users would think it was kind of tacky, but they absolutely love the snowflakes! Thanks for the very cool hack!
I'd like to see a "Register Now" graphic. That would be a good way to get guest's attention on the forum home page.
Happy Holidays! :)

make sure its the season FOLDER you have uploaded, not just the files inside.
so it will be:
forum/season/0.js
ect.

if you change the height option in the scripts it will snow down the full screen on I.E but not on firefox , anyone know how to change the settings in the scripts for firefox to match that of I.E?
I think firefox is working out the snow fall from the size of the screen and not the size of the page so when you scroll down it is only snowing for the number of pixels in the inital draw of the browser window. Anyone savvy enough with these scripts to rectify that?

haven't you complained about that already in this thread? I have it running on my board and its made little to no difference on the board processing.
Not for nothing but if you don't like the hack then don't use it and let other people make their minds up about it. That or propose a way to "speed" the code for yourself, propose an alternative hack or try to give people enough information so that they can help you to fix the your problem.

I edited the location of the java scripts
<script type="text/javascript" src="/forum/season/$vboptions[guidesvbs_type].js"></script>
and edited the location of the image files in the java scripts
var snowsrc="/forum/season/ghost/snow2.gif"
or you could place another season folder in you adv_portal directory...

This is a very good hack, and i combined it with a user profile field :)
From now on, my users can enable, or disable it :)
But i had the same problem with some other guys, that said that in firefox (and opera) the snowflakes(and the hearts, etc) dissapear quickly, and they do not drop down to the end of the page.
I did change the 2.js file (for small snowflakes) to 1000 pixels, but there was no difference :(
Although, in IE this works fine, to the end of the page.
Any solution?
Thanks again :)

Of course :)
Before making the template edits, do theese:
1) AdminCP -> User Profile Fields -> Add New User Profile Field
2) Choose "Single Selection Radio Buttons"
3) Fill in all required fields and insert two values in the Options Box: (seperated with a return)
YES
NO
4) Set "Default" to YES
5) Hit "Save" and memorize the name of your field, in my case it's "field8".
6) Now, instead of adding
<!-- Start vBGuides Season -->
<if condition="$vboptions[guidesvbs_onoff] == 1">
<if condition="$vboptions[guidesvbs_area] == 0">
<script type="text/javascript" src="season/$vboptions[guidesvbs_type].js"></script>
</if></if>
<!-- End vBGuides Season -->
at the top of the header, add this:
<!-- Start vBGuides Season -->
<if condition="$bbuserinfo['fieldX']=='YES'">
<if condition="$vboptions[guidesvbs_onoff] == 1">
<if condition="$vboptions[guidesvbs_area] == 0">
<script type="text/javascript" src="season/$vboptions[guidesvbs_type].js"></script>
</if></if>
</if>
<!-- End vBGuides Season -->
7)Also, instead of adding
<!-- Start vBGuides Season -->
<if condition="$vboptions[guidesvbs_onoff] == 1">
<if condition="$vboptions[guidesvbs_area] == 1">
<script type="text/javascript" src="season/$vboptions[guidesvbs_type].js"></script>
</if></if>
<!-- End vBGuides Season -->
in forumhome, add this:

<script type="text/javascript" src="season/$vboptions[guidesvbs_type].js"></script>
</if></if>
</if>
<!-- End vBGuides Season -->
You should replace the fieldX to the one specified on step 5 :)

You could always run a mysql query to update the field to yes for every user rather than it being empty.

Hi.
I'm having trouble getting this to run at all.
v3.6.4, Kartel Fluid style
1) vbgseason.xml installed
AdminCP / Plugins & Products / Manage Products / Add/Import Product
also set it to "allow overwrite" and then clicked Import
verified its listing in the Installed Products
verified its listing in the vBulletin Options / vBGuides: Season Effects
2) uploaded season FOLDER to my directory :
/html/[I]forum_name/forum/
where forum_name is just an example of the actual name of my site
resulting in,
/html/forum_name/forum/season/
3) Styles & Templates / Style Manager / Kartel Fluid / Edit Templates / header
and added the code for it at the very top of header:
<!-- Start vBGuides Season -->
<if condition="$vboptions[guidesvbs_onoff] == 1">
<if condition="$vboptions[guidesvbs_area] == 0">
<script type="text/javascript" src="season/$vboptions[guidesvbs_type].js"></script>

<!-- End vBGuides Season -->
<script language="JavaScript" type="text/JavaScript">

var i,x,a=document.MM_sr; for(i=0;a&&i<a.length&&(x=a[i])&&x.oSrc;i++) x.src=x.oSrc;
}
function MM_preloadImages() { //v3.0

This is a great Mod, i really like it, have it installed!
I do have a couple of requests for any possible future updates to this mod though.
Would it be possible to get it so you can upload your own pics? ( i know i can rename other pics and replace the ones there, but for adding more, etc)
Would it be possible to get it so you can select more than one image to show at a time? (for example, the witch, the ghost and the bat all at the same time on the screen)
If this would be possible, awesome! If not, no problems.
Cheers again for the great mod!

And here another install!
With some gifs it loads a bit strange. They show on top as it (slowly) loads the page. After that they fall as they should. Can be slow for users with low speed, but tha again, how long do you use it anyway?
Nice one, thanx!

Of course :)
Before making the template edits, do theese:
1) AdminCP -> User Profile Fields -> Add New User Profile Field
2) Choose "Single Selection Radio Buttons"
<...snip...>
Known bug: If i set from acp the default to YES, it does not show the snowflakes, but my users, must set it to yes from user cp, and save, to see them. Any ideas to make it working for all users, without having to enable it for the first time?
Perhaps it's got something to do with using Radio buttons... or the way you coded the IF statement to look for "YES" (rather than "not NO")
...but when I used the method Q139 linked to, it seems to work fine:
I used the method posted here to let the members turn it off and on...works perfectly....
https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showthread.php?t=99991
Look below "Few addons for this modification."
:up:
I thought adding these effects "Globally" would be a bit too much. And yet adding them only to Forum Home wasn't enough! So I also added the same code to FORUMDISPLAY template so the Seasonal Effects will show there. I edited the XML script so my new options in Admin CP are:
Global (Everywhere)
Forum Home and Forum Display
I'll enable it for Valentine's Day and see what my users think. If they don't like it they can always turn it off in their User CP.

I see images included with the download for (Uncle) "sam" and "easter" ... but there's no pulldown in the AdminCP to choose these. Why not?
I know I can manually rename them to use them but it'd be nice if there was a pulldown choice for every pic there. Or make it easily customizable so we can add our own.

There's a bug in this, FWIW. If this is installed and enabled, and the user clicks around on ForumDisplay, occasionally they are taken to this site:

Why is that URL included, and is there a way to remove it?

I can't get the bats or ghosts to work properly with Firefox either.
What I did to substitute was: rename the ghost1.gif to easter.gif
(I also reduced the image to half it's size)
Then open the 12.js script and change:
var no = 10;
10 represents the number of images on the screen, I changed it to 3.
also change:
setTimeout("snowIE_NS6()", 10);
10 represents the speed, I changed mine to 25 to slow them down a bit.
Re-upload the editted files, then in ACP choose Easter Basket as the Seasonal Effect.
It's a primative way to do it, but it serves it's purpose. :p

tigrattack
10-25-2007, 02:26 PM
Works fine with 3.6.5 with IE, but has a problem with Firefox.
As I can see...the issue isn't with the vb version, it's a browser issue.

Ya know... this about your 4th or 5th complaint about lagging... no one else is complaining and I installed it and it is working flawlessly... Perhaps you need to rethink your forum setup because it is not this plugin...
I do wish there were more options, or a way to easily install more....

You could always throw a browser IF conditional in I suppose, or even just test how it works on your forum with firefox as when I was testing it did work fine on FF.

Have you adjusted any of your browser settings from the default?
I've tried a few combinations, but cannot get it to work with FF.

I have the witches working but not the other two halloween ones in any browser so witches it is lol
This is the only one that seems to work for me as well. The only problem it causes a weird thing when opening the browser in IE
It's a very quick bunch of witches across the top kind of bumping back and forth. :(
The ghosts work in IE, not firefox--just an image in the upper right.
same with bats
It appears even the author of the Ghost Script has issues and dropped NS or FF support
This script moves images randomly around the screen, appearing and dissapearing as they go. In IE4+ they fade in and out. (They would fade in NS6 too if it didn't keep crashing. I took the fade out for NS6)

Well Not really, It has to be something in the way the Script is set up
On the site FX site were the code comes from here is a demo that runs the Java Script and it works under FireFox
http://www.javascript-fx.com/scriptclips/halloween2/demo2.html
So it has to be in the way it is called. I do not know enough about programing to figure it out

I found if you select 'witch' and then change the name of the picture you want to use to witch you can use any picture and will work with FF and IE. But the ghost will not do the fade/change thing doing it this way.

Ok folks... since there is no response for Thanksgiving support... I suppose the author got busy with something else... Here is a quick fix for Thanksgiving!!!
Do this!
Right click on this gif image on my website and save it!
http://www.smclassified.com/forum/season/ghost/sam.gif
Backup your old sam.gif under your season/ghost folder and replace it with this one...
Then set the season to Uncle Sam... Presto!
--------------------------------------------------
You could replace any of the icons... but I chose the sam.gif.
To make the gif....
I had to lasso the turkey in Photoshop and place it in a transparent 34x32 image and save it as a .gif. You can do this with just about any image!
I am gonna do this with Santa in a sleigh or something... since there is only snow flakes for Christmas...
Enjoy! :D

Two Bug I've Found in vBulletin 3.6.7 PL1!! :(
The "Forum Home" option don't Work!! :confused: Only the Global (Everywhere) Option Works!! :(
The "Fireworks Pixel 2", take in many cases a width Larger that the Window Width, so the Explosions of the Fireworks Don't Show!! :(
Two Questions:
-1- Is there a Way to Limit the Width of the Explosions so that they Fit Inside the Window all Times?? :confused:
What Code Should I Replace on the Scripts?? :confused:
-2- How can I Limit the Drop of the Snow Flakes to the Top of the Page (some amount of Pixels, perhaps 200 or 300), so that the don't have to Fall to the Bottom of the Page (some of my Pages are very Large, so the Flaked would look better only Falling in the Top of the Page)?? :confused:
What Code Should I Replace on the Scripts?? :confused:

This is REALLY cool. The first time I've seen snow in years...
However, one of my members is blind and uses a voice reader which bleeps when I turn on the snow. I was hoping it was just the larger snowflakes that hit the side of the frame and make it jump a bit, but it seems it's hitting the text that does her wrong. I don't really understand how that's happening, because the snowflakes don't reach the chatbox in Firefox... Any ideas?
I'll put in a user conditional for her, but thought you might like to know about this possible glitch.

Yes, ensure that on every styles template "header", you add this code to the very top: ;)
<!-- Start vBGuides Season -->
<if condition="$vboptions[guidesvbs_onoff] == 1">
<if condition="$vboptions[guidesvbs_area] == 0">
<script type="text/javascript" src="season/$vboptions[guidesvbs_type].js"></script>
</if></if>
<!-- End vBGuides Season -->
If you cannot get the mod to work on your forumhome, then simply add this code to the "forumhome" template above "$header":
<!-- Start vBGuides Season -->
<if condition="$vboptions[guidesvbs_onoff] == 1">
<if condition="$vboptions[guidesvbs_area] == 0">
<script type="text/javascript" src="/season/$vboptions[guidesvbs_type].js"></script>
</if></if>
<!-- End vBGuides Season -->

Is there any way to extend the animation display for this mod? What I mean is, on my forum (http://www.m3forum.net/m3forum/), the animation only appears over the first (top) 1/4 of the forum home. As you scroll down, the animation dies out instead of extending itself to the bottom (footer) of the page.

Just a guess. Do you have it in your header template?
Try adding to your FORUMHOME template or to whatever template you wish it to show on.

<!-- Start vBGuides Season -->

Sounds to me that you need to provide a full URL to the JS file mate. In other words, for the code provided in each header template, change:
<script type="text/javascript" src="season/$vboptions[guidesvbs_type].js"></script>
To this:
<script type="text/javascript" src="http://www.myforums.com/season/$vboptions[guidesvbs_type].js"></script>
To recap, change all the instances of the above code to a full SRC. Check in your FTP browser to see where exactly the "season" folder is located. Then link to it as demonstrated above. Good Luck!

<!-- Start vBGuides Season -->
<if condition="$vboptions[guidesvbs_onoff] == 1">
<if condition="$vboptions[guidesvbs_area] == 0">
<script type="text/javascript" src="season/$vboptions[guidesvbs_type].js"></script>
</if></if>
<!-- End vBGuides Season -->
at the top of the header, add this:
<!-- Start vBGuides Season -->
<if condition="$bbuserinfo['fieldX']=='YES'">
<if condition="$vboptions[guidesvbs_onoff] == 1">
<if condition="$vboptions[guidesvbs_area] == 0">
<script type="text/javascript" src="season/$vboptions[guidesvbs_type].js"></script>
</if></if>
</if>
<!-- End vBGuides Season -->
7)Also, instead of adding
<!-- Start vBGuides Season -->
<if condition="$vboptions[guidesvbs_onoff] == 1">
<if condition="$vboptions[guidesvbs_area] == 1">
<script type="text/javascript" src="season/$vboptions[guidesvbs_type].js"></script>
</if></if>
<!-- End vBGuides Season -->
in forumhome, add this:
<!-- Start vBGuides Season -->
<if condition="$bbuserinfo['fieldX']=='YES'">
<if condition="$vboptions[guidesvbs_onoff] == 1">
<if condition="$vboptions[guidesvbs_area] == 1">
<script type="text/javascript" src="season/$vboptions[guidesvbs_type].js"></script>
</if></if>
</if>
<!-- End vBGuides Season -->
You should replace the fieldX to the one specified on step 5 :)
Known bug: If i set from acp the default to YES, it does not show the snowflakes, but my users, must set it to yes from user cp, and save, to see them. Any ideas to make it working for all users, without having to enable it for the first time?
You can force it enabled to all current users by executing the following command on your database:
UPDATE userfield SET fieldXX='YYYYY'
Where XX is the id of the field you added and YYYYY is the default option.

The add-on description says "Uses plugins", but that's not true, vbgseason.xml has no plugins defined at all.
Since I prefer a plugin over template edits (minimum of additional load, I admit, but makes it much easier to update; or to apply when you've got a dozen styles), here's what I added to make the template change unnecessary:
Add a new plugin, for hook global_complete, with the following code:
if ($vbulletin->options['guidesvbs_onoff']==1)
{ if ($vbulletin->options['guidesvbs_area']==0)
$rplseason = "<body>";
else if ($vbulletin->options['guidesvbs_area']==1)
$rplseason = "<body>";
$tempseason = "<!-- Start vBGuides Season -->\n";
$tempseason .= '<script type="text/javascript" src="season/'.$vbulletin->options['guidesvbs_type'].'.js"></script>'."\n";
$tempseason .= "<!-- End vBGuides Season -->\n";
$output = str_replace($rplseason, $rplseason."\n".$tempseason, $output);
}
Btw, I see the same problem of snow flakes not falling when scrolling, that's why it's currently on my test forum and not on a live one yet.
(edit: small mistake in code above, no time to fix it immediately, was just a incentive to go plugin anyway ;) )
|Jordan|

I use the small snowflake, but is there a way to make the snow fall a little bit more? Now I have 5/6 snowflakes falling reallys slow, but when I think of snow, I mean a little bit me than 5/6 flakes at a time on my screen.
Yes, as with all of the effects, you just edit the corresponding javascript file.
To add more small snow, edit in "season\2.js" the line:
// Configure below to change number of snow to render
var no = 10;
Change 10 to however many snow flakes you want.
The variable differs in most of the javascripts, but its easily identifiable because there's usually a comment marking where to add more of something.

Well thats no use as the code needs to be added to the "HEADER" Template to all the relevant styles ;)

When someone is playing a game and a snowflake falls into the play screen, it messes it up.

Really lags forum and sucks up the bandwith -.-
Lags the serve?Based on personal experience this hack has not lagged the sever, unless you have a database server that offers free space. If you want a good website, upgrade or switch to a server that has plenty of space and bandwidth for the massive site you have. HaHaHa.
I'm only playing, but if you want to complain, give a reason that can be believable. This hack is so small it will not lag or reduce the performance of your website or server provider.
I have a couple complaints or suggestions, due to IE. I have a customized style, which your hack works perfect, but in default vBulletin style it doesn't show snowflakes properly. Many of my users agree that they see nothing, but X's in a box, dropping like rainfall. In IE under custom style the snowflakes are perfect, but in FireFox Browser there is never a problem with either styles.
Funny thing is, when I am in FireFox, the snowflakes are consistent in every style, but when viewing in Internet Explorer all styles are not consistent. Custom style in IE is perfect, but in vBullentin default style a snow flake shows up as a box with an X in the box. The box reacts as an raindrop on a window rather than a snowflake.
Any suggestions to my problem will be very appreciated. Thanks Brad

It can't lag your site because it isin't server-side javascript; its client-side javascript. The only way it might lag certain user is because they have a dinosaur computer that can't handle movement on screen or a browser that can't fully parse the javascript.

could you add a function that we can schedule the seasonal effects?
Most effects are for holidays... those holidays are already default in VBulletin calendar .. can you hook it up to that so it will automaticly load witches at haloween, hearts at valentine's day, snow at the beginning of winter etc... (maybe a sun also for summer?)

I just installed this today. I am totally illiterate when it comes to these things, but this was actually pretty easy.
I also figured out, as many of you said, that if you rename a gif to any of the names and replace them in the ghost folder you can have any image you want :)

nice mod and installed.
One question, how do you make the flakes etc fall further down the forum, seems a very short level before they fade out.

this was working fine last year but i have just enabled it again and it seems to have broken.
In Firefox it will not show on the cmps portal page, but it is ok on the forums.
In IE it works on the cmps page but the snow is just boxes with a red cross, again it is fine on the forums.
In chrome the snow is missing again and it leaves trails down the page of the cmps.
Any ideas??:confused:

its ok i fixed it.
just make the js var path to the pics explicit
open the js file and change var snowsrc="season/ghost/snow2.gif" to var snowsrc="http://www.myforum.com/season/ghost/snow2.gif"
