View Full Version : Show Thread Enhancements - Next/Previous Thread Title Replacements
magnus
11-07-2006, 10:00 PM
Keywords: Thread, Newest, Oldest, SHOWTHREAD, SEO
Description:
Replaces the ? Previous Thread | Next Thread ? links located at the bottom of the SHOWTHREAD output with their respective thread titles. Adds 2 additional queries.
Details:
This hack functions exactly like the current links, except now users can see the actual thread titles of the next newest and next oldest thread. Someone said this could(?) help with SEO somewhere along the line. I don't claim to know enough to validate this statement. I developed the hack because it simply provided more information to the user, possibly enticing them to click with a thread title that may peak their interest.
I've also never been fond of the location of these links originally, at the bottom, so I've included an option via the AdminCP where you can opt to relocate the links to the top of the page just below the navbar (see screenshots below).
Installation:
1. Download and import the product-nextprevtitle_v2.1.xml file via the Product Manager.
2. Optionally, you may configure alternate placement via your AdminCP (vBulletin Options > Next/Previous Thread Titles)
3. ???
4. Profit
Version History:
v1.0 - Initial Release
v2.0 - Added ability to choose placement; Added template for end-user configuration
v2.1 - Adapted to work with 3.6.3
* Occasionally, you may notice a link beying displayed as "-" rather than a thread title. This is normal. This simply means there is no thread which is newer (or older) than the current thread being viewed. This same functionality is in vBulletin by default.

Great hack, I have a very old version bookmarked which required edits. This one will do nicely as a replacement. Thanks! :)

As this has two queries, would it not be server intensive on a large scale?

Thanks for this but I think vBSEO does that already.

Define large scale. Regardless of the size of your forum, that doesn't change your SHOWTHREAD page. Forum size is irrelevant. However, if an additional 2 queries is of concern to you this result could still be achieved with a quick file edit which would add no additional queries.
I chose this method because a plugin is far more desireable than file edits. Your choice.
However, if you find different results as to the performance load incurred, I'd love to know. Unfortunately, I don't have the luxury of a large scale / uber-active forum to test on. :(

Thanks for this but I think vBSEO does that already.
Does it? I'm a vBSEO license owner, and I couldn't find this option in the vBSEO Control Panel.
Either way, this is a free alternative for those not fortunate enough to be blessed with a vBSEO license. :P
* Edit: I checked the vBSEO forums, and indeed they are implenting this feature -- however, I'm unsure if it's a function of vBSEO or a completely separate hack they are using. I'm looking through my vBSEO Control Panel right now and I can't find an option for it.

Ok, so I took a few minutes more than 10.. :)
Just updated v2.0. This will allow you to choose placement (Top, Bottom, Both) as well as tailor the layout to your liking via templates (nextprevtitle_bits).
I usually recommend to uninstall the product, then import the new version -- however, you should be fine by selecting "Allow Overwrite" when importing.
Enjoy.

Enable this option to replace the 'Next Thread' & 'Previous Thread' links with direct, Content Relevant links. Note: This option adds two queries.

I'm sorry, but I cannot replicate the problem you are experiencing. I've tested every aspect of this product and it's working as intended each time.
I've tested it on a fresh 3.6.3 install as well as a 3.6.2 -> 3.6.3 upgrade.

It should be available in all versions of vBSEO including the previous ones and somehow, I think you have missed it so here's how to find it:
Go to vBSEO CP > SEO Functions > Direct Links > Replace 'Previous/Next Thread' redirect links and finally switch that option to "Yes". :)

. However, if an additional 2 queries is of concern to you this result could still be achieved with a quick file edit which would add no additional queries.
I would be glad if you could help me to show me how to maybe get the result with no additional query. A member of vbulletin team told me it has to be done with two additional queries. I would prefer a file edit for speed improvement.

It would be just very good for SEO, if there is a title and link that match together.
Thanks for this great addition. I was wondering if it would be possible to add a "New Post" option to future releases so that rather than:
? Post the bloody great picture of yourself. (http://azhforum.com/showthread.php?t=1345&goto=nextoldest) | Santa's message to BD (http://azhforum.com/showthread.php?t=1345&goto=nextnewest) ?
We get this:
? Post the bloody great picture of yourself. (http://azhforum.com/showthread.php?t=1345&goto=nextoldest) |New Posts (http://azhforum.com/search.php?do=getnew)| Santa's message to BD (http://azhforum.com/showthread.php?t=1345&goto=nextnewest) ?
Possible?

It would be just very good for SEO, if there is a title and link that match together.
This is how it's done:
1. Open SHOWTHREAD style
2. Search for
$threadid&goto=nextoldest
3. Replace with
$getnextoldest[threadid]
4. Search for
$threadid&goto=nextnewest
5. Replace with
$getnextnewest[threadid]
I believe there are only remarkable SEO improvements if you also direct code the threadids the way I showed here. Because only this way there is a link to the previous / next topic.
I would be glad if this small enhancement would takes it way to this product!

i'd suggest to do this change on SHOWTHREAD:
<div class="smallfont" align="center">
<strong>«</strong>
<a href="showthread.php?$session[sessionurl]t=$getnextoldest[threadid]">$vbphrase[prev_thread]</a>
<if condition="$getnextnewest[threadid] > 0">
|
<a href="showthread.php?$session[sessionurl]t=$getnextnewest[threadid]">$vbphrase[next_thread]</a>
<strong>»</strong>
</if>
</div>

Sure, in the showthread_getinfo hook -
FIND:
$nextthreadtitle = '</a>-<a href=\"#\">';
REPLACE WITH:
$nextthreadtitle = '</a>There is no next thread<a href=\"#\">';
FIND:
$prevthreadtitle = '</a>-<a href=\"#\">';
REPLACE WITH:
$prevthreadtitle = '</a>There is no previous thread<a href=\"#\">';
I'll see about adding a customizable text field in the settings, as well as the other suggested changes in this thread in the next release.

This mod has a small permission bug.
In case you set the forum permission that user can see only owned thread, can not see others thread, then when a user create a thread in the forum, then, he can see the "next and Previous" threads' title.
So I have to temporarily disable this product.

This modification simply retrieves the thread title from a threadid. The threadid is provided by vBulletin.

I think you should check for the permission when pull out the thread title. In case the user do not have permission to read the next/previous thread, it shouldn't be shown the real title.
In vB, it only show the link See the next oldest/newest thread instead.
thanks..it's working great also for 3.7 beta 5

Hi,
I have been using this long time for 3.8.x, it's working fine,
but I figured out a problem now :
- users can see the title of next/previous threads in a forum where "only thread starters" and admin can see the threads !
please fix it and update version for 3.8.x so users rely on it.

This one is in a subforum. (http://vgchat.info/forum/threads/562-Super-Mario-Bros.-3-Cheat-Codes-%28for-NES%29?p=180488#post180488)
Any clue how to fix it up to get it working proper with vb4 so it doesn't work halfway? (I installed the plugin, disabled it. Left the custom template that it added [nextprevtitle_bits] and now this is how it's behaving.)
