I know this has been requested many times before with no results, and I know all the arguments against it, but this is a feature that is absolutely integral to our community.

We're looking for a modification for vB 3.6.2 that will allow people to use remotely hosted/offsite avatars. We are using the legacy postbit. We would like it to have at least as many security checks as using the [img] tag in posts. We don't care if people change the avatar after they have linked to it. We will be forcing any avatars not already 117x117 pixels to be resized to 117x117.

Would there be someone willing to code such a modification for the plugin/hooks section or can someone point me to all the code that I need to change so I might do this myself?

Just to clarify, by resizing I mean using the html code to resize the image, not actually physically resizing it. A 10mb 1024x768 image will still be 10mb and 1024x768, it will just be displayed as 117x117.

Thanks

This is the most recent version I can find. Has anyone created one for the latest version of vB using the Plugins & Products manager? Would this version from 3.0.0 RC4 be easy to adapt?

I've looked into this further, and it may be possible to do this with templates and a custom field.

I've alread done a basic modification on our dev forum, but I'd like it to check that the link entered has no html commands, no symbols (ie. <, > and especially ? - don't want any dynamic scripts) and is a valid image file. Dimension checking is not required as we are willing to force the size to be 117x117.

I have written a template modification for this myself:
