View Full Version : Administrative and Maintenance Tools - Custom Board Closed Message

Paul M

This modification is no longer available or supported.

Something I recently saw requested.

This allows you to display a completely custom page to members when you close your forum (instead of the current standard error type page).

Note: The supplied "Board_Closed" template is pretty basic, you should customise it to suit your needs.

History:

v1.01 : Initial vb 3.6 release.
v1.02 : Added Template Caching.

I like it. Much better than the VB generic "forum closed" message.

As always, you rock, Paul. Many thanks! ;)

*confused* Before you laugh at me could you please tell me what I am supposed to do with the file I unzipped. All I have is an xml thing and I don't know what to do with it. Did I mention I am a total novice?

Paul M

Import it into vB using the Product Manager.

I thought there was already an option to give a custom message when the board is set to closed, or am I misunderstanding the purpose of this mod?

Installed. However IMHO it would be a good idea to supply some basic instructions for editing the template.....

$header
$navbar
$footer

...........for instance.

Paul M
03-11-2007, 07:24 PM
This mod is not the place for such things, there are plenty of threads on the subject, or you can ask in the appropriate forums. :)

agitated
03-11-2007, 10:42 PM
How so ? This mod requires a template edit and the template supplied is very basic to say the least. Very poor instructions. OH I forgot, there are no BASIC instructions.
MOD rating = bad

Paul M
03-11-2007, 11:17 PM
This mod does not require any template edits, that's your choice. I'm not here to teach you how to edit templates. Surprisingly, no one else seems to have a problem.

I suggest you uninstall it, and look elsewhere for what you want.

agitated
03-12-2007, 12:23 AM
I didn't have any problems at all. I edited the template and have a custom message now.
However it occured to me that this MOD does have the potential to cause a problem for those not used to editing the templates.

If for instance your browser crashes or you loose the connection whilst the board is in a disabled state, some may find it difficult to get back into their forum.

From your MOD post..
Note: The supplied "Board_Closed" template is pretty basic, you should customise it to suit your needs.

Paul M
03-12-2007, 12:43 AM
"should" - i.e. it's optional, not required - I'll bet most people don't (I haven't).

Im not tryna be negative.. but what in the world is the point of this when U can go to:
vb opts / Help Turn Your vBulletin On and Off / Reason For Turning Forum Off

BAM !.

Perhaps if you actually bothered to READ the description ........

This allows you to display a completely custom page to members when you close your forum (instead of the current standard error type page).

Paul M, the only thing this mod missed is that it can't be used on multilanguage forums as there are no translation strings.

Also, I think that this mods control panel must be done as this mod has:
https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showthread.php?t=122998

61495

And when the board is closed the user will see smth like this:
52899

P.S. To understand what I am talking about you have to install this mode and see how the forums rules' page is generated there.

But that mod also doesn't have translation strings for that
61495
filelds.
But I know this is not to hard to implement. I hope so :p

And if there are 3 languages on my forum? ;)

Any way I made a proposal above on how I see the next versions of this mod. :)

Hi Paul, this is what i was just looking for... I've only one problem, I'm using VBSeo and I would like to "exclude" this "Board_Closed" page from VBSeo..

In order to do that in VBSeo options, I would need to add the exact URL for this custom page. Is that possible with something like "/misc.php?do=page&template=Board_Closed" or something like that?

Or if you know how to exclude the VBSeo code in this particular template...

Thanks!

Paul M
05-16-2007, 08:28 PM
I can't think of any way you could do that, there isn't a specific url.

I had the opportunity to use this mod, since I was installing v3.6.7 and wanted to keep people out until I was done.

I noticed that even though I turned it ON, I had people logging in?

Have I missed something?

Thanks

Badger

Did you close your forum ?

All this does is display a custom message when the forum is closed, it does not close the forum for you.

Yup ... :D

I said "NO" to the prompt and "YES" to using the custom message.

I have no idea how they were logging in... just standard registered users.

vbulletin does not stop members from connecting if they have their cookie - it just displays the message instead of the normal page (In fact, I'm not even sure it stops you logging in actually).

Yup, I log in as an Administrator (as per the docs) and it let's me through. That's how I noticed all of the people starting to show up in the "Who is On" display.

I wonder if they're not really on the system, but rather just at the "closed message", even though they show up in that display?

I do have members with "cookies set" who go direct to links other than the home forum page and they show up as being on those pages. Interesting.... :)

Badger

You should see the little lock icon for those users, indicating they are getting the closed message.

That's interesting... thanks ..

I'll look for that next time I shut it down ...

I really like this mod. It let's one create a highly customized and personally styled page when you shut down the board. I've even incorporated pics to entertain... :D

Thanks again Paul. Please keep these unique and neat add-ons coming...

Great hack but I must admit it's kind of confusing since I am the admin and I am viewing the admin panel but when I go to forum homepage I'm getting my custom page as well (even though I'm logged in as admin).

Thanks :D

Yes, it's a template, you can put variables in it just like any other template.
