Hi,
I have vBulletin Version 3.5.4 and I want to upgrade my forum to 3.6.2, but I am scared to do that, as I fear something bad will happen and I will lose all my forum data.
Can anyone give me some handy tips to ward off the danger of falling into some bad situation?
(Except for paying 130 USD to VBulletin Experts ;) )
Thanks

I personally haven't heard anything good yet come out of a full upgrade......Not trying to scare ya away, but if you have a bunch of mod's/hack's on your site....you will probably loose them all, or about 80% of them.
I would go to vbulletin.com and just look around in their 3.6 how do i section....and see all of the question's and error's people have run into at this point.....
I wouldn't have moved myself, cept my database got hacked last month..
Wish i could offer a more positive out look, but i just haven't seen as much positive about the new vbulletin, verses when 3.5 came out.....
Just my .02, hotwheels

I don't think I lost a single hack, and I might have gained a couple.
I have had very positive experiences upgrading except one time.
I disable all plug ins, upload the files, run the script, and one by one reenable the hacks. If the hack has a up to date equivelant I install that instead. I check before I upgrade though, and completely uninstall those that do. It's really quite simple and worth it in my opinion.

It will depend on your hacks. Do some research to see what is compatible before hand. It only took me 5 minutes to upgrade, then another 20 minutes merging template edits.

Thanks guys for your handy comments.
I have seen on vbulletin.com people complaining about different errors occured after updating.
So, I gather I should first disable all mods / plugins, then upgrade and finally install all of the mods / plugins again.
But do you think the changes made in the templates will cause problems?

That makes a lot of sense. Thank you.

An absolute must is backup your database before you start, then if you get into a mess (which really you shouldn't), you can just restore the database and go back to using your 3.5 files.

Working with vBulletin since 2001/2002, only once or twice can I ever remember an issue with an upgrade and even then it was easily solved. This counts both my expirence as a customer and as a member of the vBulletin support team.
Upgrading is safe, and in a worst case senario you should have your backup.

bada bing, I have never upgraded before.
Zachery, thanks a lot, your assurance is enough to encourage me do it.
I am having problem backing up my mysql... may be net problem or something else, if does not give any page after I save the file.
Trying to resolve this problem to go ahead with the upgrade :)

Is it ok if I rename all the files that are going to be replaced. So if some error occurs, I can delete the new files and restore the old ones by renaming them again?
Or the problem occurs only in mysql?

Gee, why do you worry too much? Well in that case, why don't you perform a full backup of your site files and then do the upgrade? Ask your webhost for a backup, you know...
I can help you out, if you want me to.

I am scared to upgrade, too. Why do I need to? My forum is very pretty, and runs okay being a 3.6.0. Besides, that version reminds me of my Xbox.

First Step
-Back Up your forum
Second Step
-Check if current hacks/mods are available for lastest version
Third Step
-Check if your skin can be modify to work on your next upgrade
Those are the 3 main thing I use when upgrading my forum. I move from 3.0.x to 3.5.x but I want to move to 3.6.2, but my license expired :(

I have lost my forum data once in the past when I accidently deleted the wrong mysql, and I can vividly recall the reaction of the members ... So just want to make sure it does not happen again :)
Yes, I am at it now, have performed a backup of my forum.
Thanks for your help offer, I really appreciate that, but I want to do it myself to learn. :)

That is most definately the best way to do it! I have learned so much about PHP, MySQL, XHTML, forum management, all kinds of things from adminstrating my own forum this last year. I'm MOST DEFINATELY no expert, but I'm definately learning, and picking up things along the way, and it's mostly to Trial and Error (ALWAYS HAVE A BACKUP ESPECIALLY IF YOU PLAN ON LEARNING THAT WAY - I learnt it the hard way!).
Oh yeah, that's what I am doing right now. Thanks :)
Rock on, and good luck!
(don't forget to backup.)

I was worried about upgrading but did it the other day everything worked out fine. All mods were their and working the only thing that does not work now is my vbadvanced cms. I upgraded from 3.6.0 to 3.6.2... Just make sure you create a back up you never know...
