Best places to place google adsense?

Has anyone tested out where is the best place to post google adsense and also how much difference it makes? I have a pretty big forum but the google adsense isn't generating much revenue. Any feedback would be wonderful.

I wanted to keep my adsense ad as unobtrusive as possible, so I put it next to the 'welcome' box in the navbar. So far it's getting some good clicks, and my members aren't unhappy about me putting ads on.

I think that's a conflict of interest that we all run into. Most of the time I will get some complaints from some customers but most of them are very understanding since they know that it requires a lot of resources to maintain a forum. Anyone else have any insights on this and also if there are any other ways of generating revenue?
