hi people,
This is a port of this (https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showthread.php?t=114234) by paul41598 (https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/member.php?u=58527) used with permission.
This is basically the same thing as the original thread but it uses the vbulletin plugin system so the file edits are no longer necessary
to install this you will need to
read install.txt
edit templates (navbar and modifyoptions) => template_edits.txt
upload the included "sounds" directory to your vbulletin rootthat's it

those are template edits not the same as sourcefile edits ..... templates always need to be edited by hand.I could include the complete edited template but according to the vbulletin licence i'm not allowed todo that ...

actually to tell the truth you can automate that
$vbulletin->templatecache['TEMPLATENAME'] = str_replace('find','replace',$vbulletin->templatecache['TEMPLATENAME']);
but i've never used it before.

Files are stored on your server. Templates are stored in your database. There are no file edits, only template edits. Their IS a difference!

I'm curious why would you want this to modified to play a .swf flash file?
As a flash developer I can do virtually design anything in flash, but puzzled why you would want a .swf to play in this mod.:confused:

I get a message asking to "allow an Active X control on this webpage"
Hello,
as I said... you are editing files one oway or the other. who cares if they're on your server or in the database or in outer-space? are files being edited... yes.
Hello,
From just these posts, I can tell you are one of those people that has to always be right. My point is that "NO FILES" are being editted, as the author stated. If you have installed other modifications from this site, which I believe you likely have, you should know by now that "FILE" edits are when you have to edit the core files, or better yet, PHP. "TEMPLATE" edits are when you don't have to have FTP access, or cpanel access, and can you can edit through the admincp.
No matter how you slice it, on THIS site, "FILE" edits are referring to "CORE" PHP "FILES". This modification, as the author stated, does not require ANY FILE EDITS.
I normally don't get caught up in these trivial types of discussions, but I believe you need to understand the difference between the 2. This site bases "FILE" edits on core "FILES". If it says the mod needs a file edit, expect to edit a PHP file. If it says it does not, you won't be editting any files...but you may need to edit some HTML in the templates.
Amen for the hook and plugin system because 99% of the modifications on this site don't require any more "FILE" editting.

Well.. I know that m8, but I mean, your hack is the one making my template messy, if I deactivate it, the template in the navbar shows ok...
So, maybe a conflict with some other hack, is that what you saying? If this is the case, any ideas to solve this?

maybe go into your browser tools/preferences (depends on what browser you are using) and changing your security setting for active x controls....
if you have the option to do so add the website to your 'trusted' list....

Ok, I like this, but I don't want random messages. I want just one. How do I do that?
Is this all that needs to be done?
Remove:
srand(make_seed());
$srand_snd = rand (1,5);
Change:
$sound = iif($vbulletin->userinfo['pmunread'], '<embed src="sounds/message'.$srand_snd.'.wav" autostart="true" loop="0" hidden="true"></embed>');
To:
$sound = iif($vbulletin->userinfo['pmunread'], '<embed src="sounds/message.wav" autostart="true" loop="0" hidden="true"></embed>');
That removes the random thing and just makes one sound play, right? I asking opinions because this is what I tried and some bugs were reported. Somethign I did wrong or missed?
Can anyone else confirm that it doesnt work with CMPS 2.20 installed?
I would really like to install this.
I tried going ahead and installing it anyway but I can't find this code in my Navigation / Breadcrumb Templates - Navbar
<div class="navbar" style="font-size:10pt"><a href="$vboptions[forumhome].php?$session[sessionurl]"><img class="inlineimg" src="$stylevar[imgdir_misc]/navbits_start.gif" alt="" border="0" /></a> <strong>$vboptions[bbtitle]</strong></div>
</if>
</td>
The closest I got is this..
<div class="navbar" style="font-size:10pt"><a href="$vboptions[forumhome].php$session[sessionurl_q]" accesskey="1"><img class="inlineimg" src="$stylevar[imgdir_misc]/navbits_start.gif" alt="" border="0" /></a> <strong>$vboptions[bbtitle]</strong></div>
</if>
</td>
Im not sure if thats the difference in having CMPS installed and not..
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
This is a really cool mod and I would like to put it in.
Thanks in advance.
I went ahead and installed it.. The only thing that was different was the code mentioned above.
It seems to be working correctly.
Pretty cool..

This would be the correct way of removing the random wav and making it static, right?
Is this all that needs to be done?
Remove:
srand(make_seed());
$srand_snd = rand (1,5);
Change:
$sound = iif($vbulletin->userinfo['pmunread'], '<embed src="sounds/message'.$srand_snd.'.wav" autostart="true" loop="0" hidden="true"></embed>');

i do not always get a sound notification for P.m's
i am running 3.6.3 and Vba cmps 2.2.0

Will try to disable and see how that goes.

ummm no, but the pop up screwed with the wav playing, wouldn't play until i clicked cancel or okay .... check your options though you may need to edit the pop-up option, or it may have inadvertantly gotten changed during the install... yeah I think that's what happened to me, I normally don't use the pop-up as an option because I have the flashing pm envelope hack installed (which works fine with 3.6.2 btw) and after installing *this* mod the pop-up was suddenly turned on instead of off, tho that could have been me....

But are you even using IE7, and if not, do you know if any members are? The deal is, with the new ActiveX crap, embedded objects have to be called by JS, or things like audio files cause IE7 to prompt the user via the infobar all the time. I had this installed at one time, but it was so annoying, I had to remove it. Also, I don't want it to repeat every time they refresh or click anything. I liked the way it used to work in the old 2.3.x version.

You have to be more patient then that. With hundreds of threads being posted to a day, this thread might not be viewed again by someone with the answer for weeks.
All you had to do was click Browse, select the XML file and hit Import. A search would have also revealed this information, as this is the way most products are installed.
You said you were learning everyday. Well one of the fundamental things you'll have to learn above all else when administrating a vB forum is patience.

Morning DJ,
Thank You for taking the time to reply. This, as well as other Hacks that I have problems with have been posted on their respective boards for help.
I check them regular and bump them every few days. It has been very quiet on here and other help forums (Holiday season) and maybe for that reason, I have been lucky and none have actually gone past the first page?! (I think :))
With respect, I do extensive research on previous threads/posts - with regard to problems of which are similar to mine. I search threads in the 50's and 60's. If I can't find the solution, I will ask in a thread.
I also tried the method that you said above, but that didn't work.
I will try to do it again later.
I appreciate you taking the time to answer, and my above comments are made with the greatest of respect to you.
Best Wishes,

Hi Guys, I reinstalled it all - And It DIDN'T work.
TO GET IT TO WORK: when I tried to upload the sounds folder it wouldn't let me ((cPanel) it woud only let me upload the .wav files individually), So what I did was to "Add a new folder" and rename it "sounds", I then uploaded all the .wav files to this folder and it worked on IE7 No problem.
HOWEVER, with FireFox (FF), it is an entirely different story.. I cannot get it to work. I checked the "Disable PM Sounds" but that was unticked - so it's not that. I unchecked the "Email popup notification box" but that didn't work. I am not getting the "Install Active X" line - so it can't be that.
So, although I have found the solution to the "IE7" problem, I can't find the solution to my 'playing problem' with the FF.
Does anyone know Please?
Thank You in advance,

Hello DJ,
It says Firefox Version 2.0.0.16

I installed everything correctly and followed all the steps (3.6.8). I use FF as my default browser and the DISABLE SOUNDS option only appears when using an IE browser, it doesn't appear at all when using FF. I sent myself a test PM via IE and I did not hear a sound when the message was received. Also, I cannot find any options for this in the ADMINCP. I am using FF version 3.0.1.
Any suggestions?
