Bibliasoft -- BibleFilter 1.5

Introduction
In 2004, plugins became available for both Wordpress and Drupal that converted plain text Bible verses into BibleGateway links. The plugins were free to modify and distribute, so I have ported the code to work with vBulletin and made some improvements.

I originally introduced this modification for vBulletin 3.5.x, and now I present it (with a few enhancements) for vBulletin 3.6.x

=---------------------------------------=

What does it do?

Basically, every time a user types in a Bible Verse (e.g. John 1:1), it will automatically turn it into a link to the Bible Gateway's page for that specific verse. The filter will convert verses posted in various formats including, but not limited to: John 1:1 (http://biblegateway.com/cgi-bin/bible?language=english&version=KJV&passage=John+1%3A1) John 1.1 (http://biblegateway.com/cgi-bin/bible?language=english&version=KJV&passage=John+1.1) Joh 1:1 (http://biblegateway.com/cgi-bin/bible?language=english&version=KJV&passage=Joh+1%3A1) John_1.1 (http://biblegateway.com/cgi-bin/bible?language=english&version=KJV&passage=John+1.1) 1John_1:1 (http://biblegateway.com/cgi-bin/bible?language=english&version=KJV&passage=1+John+1%3A1) 1 John 1:1 NIV (http://biblegateway.com/cgi-bin/bible?language=english&version=NIV&passage=1+John+1%3A1) John 1:1 ESV (http://www.gnpcb.org/esv/search/?go=Go&q=John+1%3A1) John 1:1 KJV (http://biblegateway.com/cgi-bin/bible?language=english&version=KJV&passage=John+1%3A1) etc.

=-----------------------------------=

Some features:

Admin Control Panel Settings
- The Administrator can choose whether or not Scripturized links open a new window or not.
- The Administrator can choose the default translation that is used.

Versatile
- The newer version supports various different means of creating links, including Book Abbreviations (Gen instead of Genesis, for example).
- A period (John 1.1) can be used instead of a colon (John 1:1).
- Users can specify which translation they would like to use simply by placing it at the end of the reference: (John 1:1 KJV, John 1:1 ESV, etc).

Extra Features
- The product will also turn Apocrypha verse references into links. NEW!

=-----------------------------------=

Installation

1) Import the product file using your Admin Control Panel.
2) ENJOY!

If upgrading, simply overwrite the old product.

=-------------------------------------=

Support

I will try hard to support this product. There are a few ways you can help support the product, too:

1) Click Install. This will help incredibly with support.
2) If you find this product useful on your forums, consider posting a link to Bibliapedia.com somewhere on your site. It's a useful free non-profit online Bible Encyclopedia.
3) Give feedback on the product! Let me know what you think!

I think that's all for now....so ENJOY!

Pretty Nice can you choose which forum to set this in?

UltraVR
09-23-2006, 05:42 PM
Unfortunately for now, this will only affect any posts in any forums. I'll consider individual forum permissions in the next release.

UltraVR

You know what else would be nice? If this could have enough user permissions to redirect guests to the register page and only registered users to the correct destination.

I'm not sure if I'm that smart, though, unfortunately. It'll have to wait until the next release.

If members could set their preferred translation in their profile. That is a cool feature of the phpbb version of this hack.

It may be possible to use this in German. It would only require modifying the regex to support the German Bible Translations on Bible Gateway.

I might add that in the next release.

I'll see if I can do that. I'm not an expert with vBulletin, but I might be able to get it to work.

Are there any other features of the phpBB one that I haven't implemented?

Also, do you have a link to the phpBB version? I can't seem to find it.

Why not the largest one with the most Languages ? ;)

Perhaps eventually I can integrate it. For now, the port from the Drupal extension only supported Bible Gateway.

For some reason it doesn't work for me in VB 3.6.3

I key in John 3:16 and press the spacebar and nothing happens. I rechecked and it is installed but the verses do not turn into links. It's as if it weren't there.

Ideas???

I've been working on a bible application - http://bible.5solas.org. On my website http://www.predestinarian.net - I've modified the source of biblefilter to link to my bible software. I'm continuing to modify the application and I plan to eventually release it. - Brandan

For those not being able to get it to work...you must use caps for the first letter of the book, else it will not link.

Found a bug.

http://www.onlinedebate.net/forums/198822-post64.html

When trying to say "The 2nd" (as in The 2nd Law of Thermodynamics) it reads it as if it may be a Bible reference. At first, I thought it was linking to perhaps Thessalonians Chapter 2, instead, it just links to the index of Bible Gateway.

Can you please tell me how to prevent this mod from removing formatting?

For example, I'll type John 3:16 in bold, but this mod removes any formatting of the Scripture it automatically links.

Due to lack of support and being too buggy (more of a nuisance because of the silly "The" bug), I've uninstalled.

I would not recommend this hack on busy forums.

The Quaran is not Holy. Holiness is taught N.Y. the Bible and the WORDS of Jesus.

Why should anyone provide its (Quaran) false teaching and Murderous ways????

This sort of inflammatory comment isn't warranted. I don't see anything wrong with simply asking about a version for the Qu'ran. Whether the author wishes to provide it or not is his choice.

Freedom of religion works both ways. If we desire the freedom to practice our faith, we should afford others that same respect.

That said, this isn't the place for religious discussion. This thread is about the Bibliasoft hack, and needs to stay on topic. I do appreciate the hack, and am grateful it was provided. Thank you. :)

I can confirm this. I'm running 3.7.0 release candidate 1, and BibleFilter 1.5 works just fine (as it has with all the betas). No problems or conflicts whatsoever.

Can I ask two questions:

1) Can I change this so the text linked to Bible Gateway links to Bible Gateways The Message version of the Bible if so how??

2) Can you make an online Bible mod or point me in the direction of one that can be viewed directly from the forum.

I am having an entirely new problem now. Look at http://www.christianfunforums.com/forums/185436-post30.html for an example.

I have a user making a post that contains the text "The 2 short haired kittens went to the same home - with a little girl". The phrase "The 2" becomes a Bible Gateway link, but it does not link to a verse. The same thing happens when anybody types in "The" followed by any number at all.

Ideas?

UltraVR

Just so everyone who is following this thread knows: I am listening to your requests and weighing them. I have something big planned that is uber-cool when I release an update for vb 3.8.0. It is sort of a fork in a different direction than this release went, but this version does still work on 3.8 as well.

Any bug fixes that need to be done on this version will be corrected eventually as well.

As far as German language support, that will hopefully make it as well, but I might need some help from German multilingual users.
