Check with your host - I would guess they have restrictions in place to stop you writing to folders outside of your web root (assuming that's what you mean).

Thank you for the reply. I am trying to write it to /admin/backups/ from my root, starting folder. I have been trying to do it by /../../admin/backups but nothing seems to work no matter how many dots or slashes I put.

I'n new at this so sorry If I don't make much sense.

Ok sorry for the newb question but I have configured the mysqlbackupconfig.php and uploaded the xml file.. how do I adjust the timing of the back ups. I dont see anywhere this product in my Admin CP. How do I make the program run?

Look in the admin cp under scheduled tasks and scheduled task manager. It should be called database backup. You can click edit for scheduling or click run now to see if it's working properly.

After two MySQL crashes in one week I was looking for a good backup solution and this does the job very nicely.

Between this hack and using WS_FTP's Synchronize utility I have a fresh backup on my local PC daily now. Eventually I'll do something to remove the old backups on the server but for now the solution is working nicely.

(And, looking the backup size of each individual table, I spotted a few things that I don't think would've normally caught my attention. Things like a 2gb ModeratorLog table! :eek: )

I thought you might want to know that this version doesnt work with vbulletin 3.7.0 BETA 3

This isnt the only hack that doesnt work but i get this error...

A conflict was detected in the bitfields. You cannot continue with the installation of this product until this has been fixed. The conflicts found were:

For some reason this mod didn't run properly today. I started run for a while but never finish or end it. I set to close the forum when it back up, but 5 hours after it run the forum still close. So I when to task scheduler and run it manually it run ........ but then it never finish. Usually when it finish i going to say finish, with 0 error now it doesn't say that

Everything was working fine since 16th dec. Until I noticed the forums stayed switched off for an unusual amount of time today. So I turned vB off, then on again to enable the forums. Ran the scheduled task manually and I got the following sql error and the forums got switched off and stayed off...

Database error in vBulletin 3.6.8:

Figures... How do I unlock it? I mean, if I manually run the task, it shouldn't be any different to a scheduled run correct? When ever I manually run the script the datastore is always locked. So I would assume it is or has been permanently locked. How would I remedy this?

Thanks Paul.

This mod kinda ruins your skins, I noticed that after a few restores so if you had this problem, don't worry, just rebuild your styles on the "Update counters" and rebuild your styles and everything will be fine

There is no way I can tell you what is locking it. Something has a read lock, the message is a bit odd to me because normally I would expect mysql to just queue the write, and process it when the read lock has gone.

This mod cannot effect skins as such, its read only. My guess is you store your css in files so you need to rebuild those files after a restore.

You can run it as often as a VB cron will allow (hourly if you want). However you will need to change the Time setting in the config so that the files have a unique timestamp, otherwise each run will overwrite the previous.

I've added a bit of code into mysqlbackup.php to compress the resultant SQL file with gzip. My database is about 35MB, and it's making it 5MB.

If you want to do the same, here is what to do. Please note, though, that this will only work if you have chosen to combine all data into one SQL file and not split each table into its own file.

File: ./includes/mysqlbackup.php

FIND (lines 525 to 527):
// Free Memory
$this->MYSQL->free_result($rows);
}
ADD BELOW:
// Compress file
if(extension_loaded('zlib') && $this->COMBINE)
{
echo "Creating gzip file from SQL file<br />"; vbflush();

$file = fopen($this->FILE, 'r');
$data = fread($file, filesize($this->FILE));
fclose($file);

$file = gzopen($this->FILE, 'w9');
gzwrite($file, $data);
gzclose($file);

rename($this->FILE, $this->FILE . '.gz');
}
You must also have the zlib extension compiled into PHP. Most shared hosts will have zlib installed as well as most PHP installations in general. The script will not attempt to compress the file unless zlib is installed. You can find out if you have zlib by entering the Admin CP and going to Maintenance > View PHP Info and looking in the Configuration Command section for '--with-zlib'.

If I start using this, and merge all sql data into the one file as mentioned, do I need to make any other changes to be able to use the backup this will create?

I had this working before, but now that we switched servers I can't figure it out to save my life.

Here is what I have as my path in the backupconfig file:
'/var/www/vhosts/mysite.com/httpdocs/back-up/'

Is this not right for a path? The folder is CHMOD to 777, so techically it should work correct?
I still get the error when I go to "Run Now" on the scheduled task manager. On the main page of the admin panel it says "Server Type - Linux Safe Mode". Does this have any reason as to why I can't get it to work? Thanks!

-Edit-
Where it says mysite.com, I actually have my forum url. I didn't want someone to mention that as a problem, lol.

Paul M
02-21-2008, 07:10 PM

Whats weird, is it seems to make a folder for the backup inside the correct folder, but there is never anything in the folder? I know that its not a permission issue now. I can go to my admin panel and do a database backup manually and it can write an sql to that folder. If I try it with this mod with the paths the same it doesnt work.

Oddly when the backup task runs javascript (vbulletin_menu.js) is stripped from all the forum pages and as a result javascript of any kind doesn't work anymore. I've narrowed down the problem to this modification - it doesnt occur with any other.

Any idea's what's happening and how to fix it? What i have to do now when this happens is either disable & enable plugin hooks or use a template cache plugin that refreshes the template cache. When i do either of these things javascript works properly again.

For those of you that wanted this to delete old backups, you can change the format it names the saved file to accomplish something close. Using the method below, the output file is named Sun, Mon, Tue... etc. By doing this, it would just overwrite the correct the 7 day old file on each save.

change mysqlbackupconfig.php

change this

$backup['DATE'] = 'Y-m-d'; // Backup file date format

to this
$backup['DATE'] = 'D'; // Backup file date format

Remember... you'll only have 7 days of backups on hand like this. If something goes wrong, you need to get to it before your backup is overwritten.

Sweet. I set permissions so nobody can see the folder, but this can write to it...

Excellent.

What is the best setting to put so it can write but nobody can see your backups?...

Forget it. I used ../Backupfile

This brought it off the public file. Now they have no access.

However it works on chmod 722, which allows it to write, but nobody can really see it, unless you are logged into your CPanel, if you can only load it to a public file...

Hi Paul,

I have a few questions, hope you can help me :)

The first one is about the parameter to shutdown the forum during backups. Why I would need to setup it to '1'? It makes backups more reliable? Do you recommend to shutdown forums during backups?

The second is about the lock tables during bump. The same question... it makes the backups more reliable?

And the three one is related to split backups in independent files for each table. I manually download my backups everyday and it's easier for me to make the backup in one unique file... it's a bad practice to backup in one SQL file all the tables?

Finally, how I tell you lines above, I download my SQL backup file via FTP. It's secure to download my backup file using FTP? I heard about it's better to use SSH to download a backup file :confused:.

Thank you for your time... and your patience :D

1. There is no need to close the forum, I don't (and in rare cases it can cause issues - see below).

2. Again, there is no need to, and it will stop you forum being used while the backup runs.

3. Its purely personal preference.

4. I use FTP, technically its more insecure, but in the real world its not likely that anyone will intercept your download.

Yes, the way the current system works appears to occasionally screw up some vb options.

So how do you fix it ?

As soon as I disable this product, the hover feature comes back. :confused:

Paul is it possible you could write a script to just force a repair/optimize every set minute/hour/day type deal? I ask because that is in this script when it runs the backup.

Thanks in advance

There is no valid reason to want to repair/optimize mysql that often. Its only in this because the original author added it, and I have never removed it. :)

I've skimmed through all of the posts and I apologise if this is mentioned previously..

On my instance, if you're the person unfortunate enough to kick off the database backup you are presented with the output from the backup script. Is there any way to turn this off?

Paul M

I'm pretty sure that should never happen. Sounds a bit odd to me.

Hey Paul M, thanks for this. This works like a charm.

I'm going through my plugins now and getting my site 3.7 ready. Is this expected to be 3.7 compatible?

Paul M

There is a 3.7 version in the 3.7 forum.

This may have been answered, but i cant find it.
After downloading the backup, i find it has saved all the tables seperately. I now want to update my mysql with a complete backup, but this will take forever with all the seperate files.

Is there a way to join all the files or install all in one hit??

Paul M
04-19-2008, 11:03 AM
You can join them with a simple dos copy command.

As for the mod itself, read the notes in the config file for the various options.

Finally! Success!

I'm running a Plesk server and tried a few times to get this script running... turning safe_mode off for my domain worked. *Installed*

I have basic computer skills. I had a person install this for me.

I am running this on 3.6.8. My webhost moved me to a different platform. Now when the auto back up runs it turns off my forums. If you are logeed on you get a banner at the top that says " Alert- forums have been shut off" If you are not logged on you get a full message stating that the forums are closed while the data base is being backed up, and does not come back on it just locks itself out. I have to turn off the plugins and hook system and turn it back on to make it work or reset.

Any suggestions on how to fix this
Thanks

I did a backup yesterday and it was 163MB and just did the one here and it came out to 113MB. Any reason that there is a big difference?

When I was doing the backup via phpmyadmin I was adding drop tables and all those features.

I cannot answer that as I have no access to your forums or backups.

Hi Paul.... :)

I've been backing up using this mod religiously.... thanks for posting it ...

I'm not that familiar with SQL or vBulletin internaks, so I've been wondering what I'd do if I had a complete hard disk failure on my host server.

I back up nightly using this mod with the option set to a "single file". I then move it to my local machine periodically.

Does the "database" (single file), as I understand it, contain ALL of the traditional data files, plus of all of the vbulletin code (including mods)?

In other words, if I had to setup a new server, would I simply install my licensed version of 1.67pl1 and then somehow have a techie restore this single file, which puts ALL of my threads, posts and forum (including mods) back to exactly the way it was prior to a failure?

Thanks for any feedback....

Regards,
Badger

If by mods you mean plugins then yes. Obviously it wont include any additional files or file edits that some mods use.

Yes, I meant "plugins" that are added by mods, but also I use mods that I have to edit various templates....

Do vBulletin templates and all of the AdminCP settings get backed up as part of this single file as well?

Thanks

Badger

but when I go to the backups folder... there is nothing in there. What did I do wrong?

If I wanted to gzip this, what would I need to add to the config file to do that?

hi paul. not sure if you can answer this or not:

my host recently upgraded to php version 5.2.6. ever since then, when the backup is complete, it does not turn the forums back on automatically. i have to manually turn the forums on myself every morning.

any idea of a fix for this?

Paul M

The only "fix" is not to use that function, you dont need to turn the forum off.

First of all, I want to THANK PaulM for taking the time to create this MOD and put up with all the people not reading the THREAD for excellent help information before posting that...

An error occured during the MySQL backup. Details (Could not open Destination SQL file for writing.)

I took the time to read ALL 42 pages of this thread last night and this morning, and was quite surprised to find that all the issues seem to have been addressed.(it's just people aren't reading the answers posted here :()

I too, got the above error when I first installed the MOD and tried to run a backup, but I kept reading over the various posts and figured out what I had done wrong.(i.e. I needed to use ../../backup as my path to the backup folder)

In particular, I want to THANK SkyCatcher for his l-o-n-g winded post about this problem.
If I read ONE MORE POST about how to set the path correctly or receiving the

Error I'm going to explode!

Setting the correct path for Linux Distributions

I think if his post had been ANY shorter, I would still have been lost, but he kept trying to get his point across, I kept reading his post, and I finally got it! :D

Also wanted to THANK Sparky5693 for his info about how to create an automatic rolling 7-day backup via this MOD. Works fine!
For those of you that wanted this to delete old backups, you can change the format it names the saved file to accomplish something close. Using the method below, the output file is named Sun, Mon, Tue... etc. By doing this, it would just overwrite the correct the 7 day old file on each save.

Want to say THANKS to Reven and his bit of code to auto gzip the resulting file.
I've added a bit of code into mysqlbackup.php to compress the resultant SQL file with gzip. My database is about 35MB, and it's making it 5MB.

I added it in as he described and when it tried to run, I got an out of memory error. :( So, upon reading Rogue's post (in reference to a php.ini file and the php memory limit)
Thanks, I'll alter to 64.
He said as he's never used vbulletin before he had no idea what directory it had to go in. I'll check over on vb.com
I too went looking for where the php.ini file goes??

Not being able to find such on vB.com, I returned to vB.org and managed to turn up this post below...
You can create a .htaccess with lines like the following to override some php settings (if host has set to allow this):
php_value memory_limit 32M
Alternative might be to include a line like the following in your config.php (should do the same):
ini_set('memory_limit', 32 * 1024 * 1024);

So I just wanted to add that I created an .htaccess file in my forums directory (containing only php_value memory_limit 64M) and then the backup routine ran fine and created the gzip file as well! :up:

Other posts in the thread helped me understand bits & pieces of how this MOD works and I THANK everyone for their informative input, but a special KUDOS goes out to the key players mentioned above. THANK YOU! :)

"Note: This modification is now discontinued" - I want to use this mod to backup my database using VB 3.6. I want to use the backup when I move to a new server and upgrade to 3.8. Will I have to install thsi mod on 3.8 to be able to use the restore function?

Edit: Ok installed and ready to try it. I cant find it anywhere in my admin panel to try to backup manually, how do i do it?

From my understanding, no you do not need this MOD installed to restore the files to your MySQL database.

In AdminCP, under Scheduled Tasks, Scheduled Task Manager, you should have an entry entitled Database Backup. You can do a Run Now and see if it works OK for you.
