View Full Version : Black and Gold 3.6
Andrew
08-19-2006, 10:00 PM
As promised, I have ported over my popular Black and Gold style yet again from vB 3.5 to vB 3.6, and I have also made some minor changes to it. The biggest changes were the addition of a totally new button set and totally new IM icons.
As always, please let me know of any issues with the style - I tested it pretty thoroughly prior to releasing it, and I wasn't able to find anything out of place. However, I have missed things before, so please don't hesitate to inform me of it..

Thanks for the update. Is it imperative to reinstall the full skin, or can we get by with updating the graphics that are missing from the update? I customized the colors a bit and have some custom additions in the posbits of my themes and I don't want to have to redo them yet again (after fixing them when I upgraded from 3.5.4 to 3.6.0).
What exactly has changed from the 3.5.4 version?

What exactly has changed from the 3.5.4 version?There were a number of additions that occurred between 3.5 and 3.6 - The main ones are the infraction system and the multiquoting.If you've updated all your templates already and have those in, you should be ok for the most part.

Beautiful as always. I think I liked the postbit black as on the older theme, but that's an easy fix.
Also, as I had to redo this modification myself, I figured I'd post how to do it here:
This little template mod changes the postbit legacy to show the rep points for the user on their posts.
Open the Postbit legacy for the black and gold style.
Find: <if condition="$show['reputation']">
Add immediately after:
<div class="pbitspacer"><div class="pbit" align="left">
Rep: $post[reputation]</div></div>
Save and you're done! This will add a new box that says "Rep: ###".
Just a little help for the lazy ones (like me) who would rather copy/paste than dive into the tangle of templates :D

Okay I have a question. When I take the image folder I downloaded and drag it into the image folder in my FTP thing it says whatever.gif is already in this folder, do you want to replace it? for every single one. So should I click "yes to all"? And then let it download and then upload the skin in the admin panel and it works?

I created a button for the Post Thank You Hack (https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showthread.php?t=122944). As I need more buttons and create them for this theme from Andrew's thoughtful PSD's, I'll post them here.

09-11-2006, 07:43 PM
I don't know why the postbits would be aligned improperly - I made only minimal changes to those templates. As for the alignment of the forums on the homepage, there is always going to be a slight variation due to the nature of splitting the tables all apart. However, if you're seeing a big gap, I think it might be a browser dependent issue.

If I get some time I'll do some comparison and testing with the default one, Andrew. Thanks.

I'm missing a ton of images in it. Loads of little red squares all over. It looks fine in FF and not fine in IE or IE7.
3 of 4 styles doing this. Not sure what is going on.
Unzipped and uploaded them to the images folder.
Andrew
09-13-2006, 01:56 PM
Did you change the relative image paths to point directly to the images folders in the style options ? That will usually fix a lot of image problems when you're using mods that operate in a different directory.
Lycius
09-13-2006, 02:58 PM
No I didn't and to be honest I am slightly clueless as to where you would do that at.
My site manager is out of town and I figured I could screw anything up by adding a few styles I liked.
Is there a doc on how to do that anywhere or a quick explaination of where the paths that need to be changed are? I can follow instruction, but I have no real experience with the board setup. It just looked simple to install a style...hehe I should have known better.
I looked around in the xml file and it looks like most of the mods are looking in /images/[Mod]/etc etc.. and my forum is in /community/images
Andrew
09-13-2006, 03:30 PM
You don't need to change anything in the .XML file - All of the image paths can be changed from the Style Manager in the AdminCP.
Lycius
09-13-2006, 03:43 PM
Yeah I figured that out and changed the path and it still can't find any of the buttons etc, even though the paths are correct.
Weird thing is that I can revert them and they show the default icons without /community in the path.
One thing I did notice is that alot of the image files etc in all the styles that aren't working have spaces in the naming. The style that works has no blank spacing and uses _ to separate.
Forgive my ignorance, but Linux doesn't recognize blank space does it?
Andrew
09-13-2006, 05:42 PM
None of my styles should have any spaces in the file names - I use underscores in place of spaces in the filenames of all my images. Are you sure you're uploading the proper images and not the .PSD images that I included for customizations ?
Lycius
09-13-2006, 06:18 PM
I uploaded the entire folder and then imported the xml.
Stupid Safeco proxy prevents me from FTPing my site so I can't actually check anything until I get home but I'm pretty sure the.....I'm pretty sure that I'm an idiot and I just figured it out. I uploaded the entire folder. Lemme try something.
Lycius
09-13-2006, 06:28 PM
Yup, I'm an idiot.
Now I have to wait until I get home to fix it since the main folder has spaces in it :laugh:
In the future, can you take the spaces out of the main folder so newbs like me don't end up all gofed up on Linux ;)
alyster4k
09-13-2006, 07:04 PM
No luck, not. I compared the few line changes and even did some copy/paste tests without any luck. I'll be damned but I can't figure out what the different between B&G and the default style really is. I'm about to give up I suppose.
Thanks for trying, it's a puzzle to me also. Usually things don't work in Firefox but do in IE.

Re: Misalignment in Postbit Legacy
Not sure what you did to fix this, Andrew, but all I did was substitute the infraction.gif icon with a different one. IMO the icon made for the skin was too wide and that is what was throwing everything off in postbit. Sometimes all the icons would wrap and sometimes just push everything out of alignment. Once I changed it to a 21x17 pixel gif everything aligned perfectly in IE and Firefox.
Of course, being the admin I have the online/offline, infraction, report post, gif and IP gifs displayed, which is probably why it was out of alignment for me in the first place.
Hope this helps if the problem hasn't been fixed.

I have Hardcoded the width of the Tables.
In Template forumhome_forumbit_level1_nopost
Original
<tr align="center">

<td class="thead" width="100%" align="$stylevar[left]">$vbphrase[forum]</td>
<td class="thead" width="175">$vbphrase[last_post]</td>
<td class="thead">$vbphrase[threads]</td>
<td class="thead">$vbphrase[posts]</td>
<if condition="$vboptions['showmoderatorcolumn']">
<td class="thead">$vbphrase[moderator]</td>
</if>
</tr>
My changed
<tr align="center">
<td class="thead"> </td>
<td class="thead" width="55%" align="$stylevar[left]">$vbphrase[forum]</td>
<td class="thead" width="30%">$vbphrase[last_post]</td>
<td class="thead">$vbphrase[threads]</td>
<td class="thead">$vbphrase[posts]</td>
<if condition="$vboptions['showmoderatorcolumn']">
<td class="thead">$vbphrase[moderator]</td>

</tr>
And it works fine, you must change width in percent and not in pixel.

Would appreciate any help as you see my users want it :)

I'm having this same issue but it looks like it's only happening when rendered in Internet Explorer 6 at least. Firefox seems to render ok. I'm not sure what the specifics are though. My users like this theme too.

This is probably a stupid question but where can I get hold of the 3.6.3 version?
I'm wondering whether I just edit the XML file and change the version back to 3.6.3...

Set ignore style version to yes
Or you can edit the xml and cange 3.6.4 to 3.6.x

The installtion instructions arnt very detailed so I assume I upload the bgold directory into the forum directory like all the other styles. I did that and imported the XML file and the style completely crashed and all the images were big text links and everything was aligned like a mess.
I like the online version but it doesnt work for me, what do I need to do to install it?

So the images go into the existing image directory??? Then it will delete all my existing images incase I want to revert back to the default style or if I want people to be able to choose from either style.
Can you please tell me where I can get this style?? This is an awesome style. I can't find a thread for it.

btw @above
you put the whole folder in the images folder then you upload the XML via the admin CP. Im not sure what you do with the font file though..

I'm not sure if this is the "correct" way of fixing this, but this is what I did to fix my site. Just look for the first 3 edits marked in green (I actually marked them in red, but for some reason they are displaying green in the code block). Sorry for including the whole template, but I didn't want to leave room for confusion.

installed this skin and love it but i have a question, i know the designer has limited access to online but maybe someone else can help?
i have installed photopost gallery and the skin has transfered accross all ok part from a couple of images, they display a red cross, after looking at the image source it seems some images are set to relative url's instead of full url's any ideas which files i change, the images missing are the logo and some of the nav bar icons i.e >>
any suggestions would be great as i am a newbie when it comes to skins

Style Manager => Black and Gold => All Style Options
On the All Style Options page, scroll down a bit, and there will be a whole list of image paths. Just pop in the full URL for your forum in every one of the fields, and you should be good to go (There will also be a couple of image paths in the background field of the Category and Header sections.)

I installed this also, (and marked as installed) I did just as the instructions said to. But all is not showing up.
I did not install the forum,(when it was installed, I had someone to do it) so maybe I am missing something when it comes to uploading by way of FTP...
Can someone advise? http://www.unitedradiooperators.com/cb-ham-radio-forum/ Thanks

If it's not too much of a hassle, could you perhabs do one where the yellow is substituted with red?
The style is just PERFECT! Truly is.. but some of my users would prefer a reddish theme.. can it be done you think? :)

Hello,
first, excuse my bad english :) ,
I have Hardcoded the width of the Tables.
In Template forumhome_forumbit_level1_nopost
Original
<tr align="center">
<td class="thead"> </td>
<td class="thead" width="100%" align="$stylevar[left]">$vbphrase[forum]</td>
<td class="thead" width="175">$vbphrase[last_post]</td>
<td class="thead">$vbphrase[threads]</td>
<td class="thead">$vbphrase[posts]</td>
<if condition="$vboptions['showmoderatorcolumn']">
<td class="thead">$vbphrase[moderator]</td>
</if>
</tr>
My changed
<tr align="center">
<td class="thead"> </td>
<td class="thead" width="55%" align="$stylevar[left]">$vbphrase[forum]</td>
<td class="thead" width="30%">$vbphrase[last_post]</td>
<td class="thead">$vbphrase[threads]</td>
<td class="thead">$vbphrase[posts]</td>
<if condition="$vboptions['showmoderatorcolumn']">
<td class="thead">$vbphrase[moderator]</td>
</if>
</tr>
And it works fine, you must change width in percent and not in pixel.
Greetings, Clochard

All of your forums must be contained within a category for this style to work (You have forums out on their own, which won't work because of the category spacing modification that I applied.)

My forumdisplay pages are centered on IE. I would normally chalk it up to IE being IE, but it's only on forumdisplay, which has me really confused.
http://www.crackedeggstudios.com/vaultwiki/
http://www.crackedeggstudios.com/forums/121/
EDIT: fixed. It was a problem in my navbar. Still no clue why it was only affecting forumdisplay, especially since it was an open tag in the navbar. Oh well.
I am not getting the columns for last post, threads, num of posts at the top level forum. Basically it is the row under the first row with User CP, FAQ, Member List, ect. that is missing.
It is correct at level two and three. Where would I go to correct this?
Any help is greatly appreciated.

Are you placing all of your forum groups within categories ? You can't have a forum as the top level of a group due to the template modifications I applied to the style, so that's likely going to be your problem. If you could link me to your forum, I could let you know for sure what the issue is.

Well, I got it installed on 3.6.5 by updating the xml. If you opened it and look for the version and change it to 3.6.5 it will install. It seems to work well on my 3.6.5 site. ;)

Is there still support for this skin?
If so, i seem to be having some issues with Firefox. None of the dropdown boxes are working. If i click on thread tools for example, instead of a dropdown box, i get two boxes at the bottom of the forum pages, one for thread tools such as show printable version, email this thread etc and one for the moderation options to close or edit the thead etc. I can't change skins, as that dropdown box doesnt work and thie quick links isn't working either. The problem doeant raie itself in other styles, only this one. I've been using this style since i went to 3.6 but since i don't use Firefox myself, i have no idea how long this has been happening.
Any ideas?

We have used this skin for a long time now and still find it a really good skin.
I have our forum now updated to 3.6.8 and it still mostly works fine.
The one annoying thing is the user avatar and stats table on the left becomes varied in size, sometimes half the page! - we use legacy postbit
(it's default set at 175 pixel width)
This is only a problem in IE, in Firefox it seems to be ok.
Be nice if I could fix it for the members that use IE tho.

No I don't made the user Profile or reloaded page button. But I can make you a Thanks button. No problem. Takes only a little bit time because today I moved my flat so some things still waiting here for me to be done.
