This modification is no longer available or supported.

The 3.6 port of this simple hack with some small changes.

This displays the number of new posts since your last visit & the number of new reputation comments since you last checked your usercp - both are displayed in the welcome panel.

Changes ;

* Fixed bug of them not showing on error pages.
* Either can be now turned off with a setting in vBulletin Options > Display New Posts and Reputation.

Notes:

If upgrading from the 3.5 version then you will need to re-do the template changes.
Versions 3.21+ do not require any manual template changes. See Post #167 (https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showpost.php?p=1356586)

This has template changes, if you don't make them then it's not going to work ....

i see you updated the zip. the first version you uploaded only had the xml in it, no info on what template changes to make so i assumed that the plugin did it during the install process. i just dl'd the zip again and i see you have updated it with the required info.

Paul can this be used with the Count of unread posts in the welcome box you have as well? I have that one installed and would like this as well.Well apart from the fact it seems a bit odd to run both as they do similar things, there is no technical reason I can think of that you cannot.

dont work for me or my members, other hack works fine & i have reinstalled it, but your shows unread posts even when they have been read ?

Paul M
08-16-2006, 05:01 PM
Correct, this is new posts, not unead posts.

Unread posts is a different mod, this was it's predecessor (from vb's 3.0 days) but is still used by many people.

When trying to access the new posts link from another directory (ie. /gallery/) the link is prefixed with /gallery/. I tried to edit the profile to set the complete link (worked on 3.5) but it doesn't seem to be working. Any ideas?

Paul M

You would have to edit the phrases to put in full paths instead of relative ones.

Thanks Paul M, fore updating this hack.

And done the editing in CP. It wont register new posts and reputation comments. Ore it wont count the numbers, of new rwp comment ore new post.

No, in the earlyer versions, it will tell you fex; There is 900 new posts and you have 4 new reputation comments.
Now it wont tell anything. Just, new posts.

Just move the template edits to suit where you want them.

version2
08-24-2006, 12:34 PM
It seemed that when I moved them to the bottom...below all the usual welcome stuff...nothing showed up. When I put them in where your instructions told me...they showed up. Very strange. I understand it is a very simple text edit and I am not a complete moron...so I dunno what happened.

One issue I ran into with this is my CMPS front page is 'below' the /forum directory structure, so the phrased links were breaking, but only from that front page. For the moment, I hardcoded the full URL to the search page into the two main "new post" phrases as $vboptions[bburl]/ didn't work. Wondering if there's a better solution?

Paul M
09-24-2006, 10:56 AM

installed! this is a lovely mod. thanks Paul but there is only one thing unnecessary. If the user have no comments then it always shows the "you have no reput comments" how can we disable it. I think if the system only warns the user when a new comment come is much better. because navbar is a limited area and its not good to list unnecessary phrased there.

Paul M
10-28-2006, 02:35 PM
I'm happy with it as it is. :cool:

If you want to change it then you will need to edit the plugin "New Posts and Reputation (1)"

Change
$vbulletin->userinfo['rcount'] = construct_phrase($vbphrase['no_new_reputation'],$repcount['rcount']);to
$show['rcount'] = false;

I've noticed some differences between this and your 3.5 version

the 3.5 version says 'no unread posts' this one shows '0 unread posts'

the 3.6 version hyperlink does not include the number only the 'unread posts' text is the hyperlink.

Intentional? I kinda like the 3.5 styles a bit better.

You're 100% right there. 10 queries aren't necessarily worse than 1 single huge query.

Installed and working great.

By the way, how does it keep track of new posts? I'm assuming it isn't doing a large query every time but you made a table that remembers from each visit?

thanks

Paul M
12-06-2006, 08:19 AM
No, this does not add any tables (but it does add an index).

It runs a simple select on the post & reputation tables.

Do a 'mark all forums as read' at the bottom of your main page to catch up if you've just switched your read method to database. changing from cookies to database seems to leave some chaos at first. But once you 'catch up' you should be fine

i have been using this option all along

Database (automatic forum marking)

Which is accurate, but like Paul says, looks like the lastvisit cannot be bypassed unless we do a compare with database for 0 unread

I noticed that in this mode you use:
No <strong><a href="search.php?do=getnew">New Posts</a></strong> since your last visit.

And in your MOD:
Count of unread posts in the welcome box
https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showthread.php?t=123886

you use:
<strong>No <a href=\"search.php?do=getnew\">Unread Posts</a></strong> since your last visit.

The difference is in symbol \ before "

If it is important than maybe we have to update this MOD?

No, I don't think it's very hard - however, this is basically a very old 3.0 mod that has been ported to 3.5 & then 3.6 simply because quite a few people use it. I no longer use it, not is it ever going to get any new features. When 3.5 came along it was basically replaced by the Unread Posts modification.

Awesome, Paul. I've looked for 4 mods I wanted to install over the last couple days and all of them are done by you! :) Top work.

Question though. I have it installed and working but I would like to only use the reputation portion and disable the "new posts" part. In the 3.5 version disabling was easy, in the plugin manager, but I don't see the same ability in this version.

Is it possible to disable the "new posts" part and leave the "new reputation comments" part active?

There is no released version that will do that.

However, if you install both, you can turn off the new posts display in this mod, so just the new reputation is displayed, and the other mod will display the unread posts.

I don't quite follow what you mean. There is an option in the ACP to turn of each half of the mod, just use that, otherwise you may still be running the SQL.

Ah that I did not notice. thank you . What I should have explained was that I did not include in the template the first part of the edit. "New Posts"
The real reason is with my custom skin and other edits. I could not find the right place to insert the code I tried everywhere and I figured its sorta redundant anyhow. That information is already displayed via other add on's hacks....
So I would be safe to assume that not installing that portion of the template edit and turning that portion off in the admcp would be ok and have no ill affects?

Thank you for a great addition

Problem........

My welcome box already has a hack, it currently looks like this:

Welcome, mmmender.
223 Unread Posts since your last visit.
You last visited: Yesterday at 7:07 AM
Private Messages: Unread 9, Total 124.

I was unable to do step 2 of your instructions......

Step 2.

In the Navbar template ;

Find ;

<if condition="$show['pmwarning']"><br /><strong><phrase 1="$vbphrase[pmpercent_nav_compiled]">$vbphrase[your_pm_box_is_x_full]</phrase></strong></if>

Add below ;

<if condition="$show[rcount]"><br />$bbuserinfo[rcount]</if>

Because where it tells me to find......

In the Navbar template ;

Find ;

<if condition="$show['pmwarning']"><br /><strong><phrase 1="$vbphrase[pmpercent_nav_compiled]">$vbphrase[your_pm_box_is_x_full]</phrase></strong></if>
This part does not exist in my navbar template.

All I really want anyway is the display new rep comments to appear in the welcome box, I can live without the new posts part of the hack.

Can you provide any assistance please? This really is the hack I've been waiting for and would love to get it working!

Thanks in advance,

Leesa

Installed this but gave it a bit of a diffrent wording. It now reads:
Welcome, Adam.
You last visited: Today at 10:00 AM
Private Messages: Unread 0, Total 129.
New Rep Comments: 2 I took out the new posts because I have that located somewhere else on the front page.

Great mod, thanks.

Any reason this might be?

I was wondering..anyway to modify this hack so it ONLY notify's when a new rep comment is given? I don't necessarily need the "new posts" and PM features.

There is no released version that will do that.

However, if you install both, you can turn off the new posts display in this mod, so just the new reputation is displayed, and the other mod will display the unread posts.

OK..where is this mod listed in admin cp? Under what title?

<if condition="$show[rcount]"><br />$bbuserinfo[rcount]</if>

did I make an error somewhere ? I was pretty careful with my editing.

BTW....does anyone know what needs to be done to have the links work on the vBadvanced portal home page? And can someone explain it in layman's terms to me? Everyone keeps asking if they can exclude forums, well, that's a different table in vBulletin. What I did is remove a user. I my case this is an RSS bot. So here's what I did.
Original New Posts and Reputation (1) Plugin:
$repcount = array();
$postcount = array();
$show['pcount'] = $vbulletin->options['npr1'];
$show['rcount'] = $vbulletin->options['npr2'];

if ($vbulletin->userinfo['userid'])
{
if ($show['pcount'])
{
$postcount = $vbulletin->db->query_first_slave("
SELECT COUNT(dateline) AS pcount
FROM ".TABLE_PREFIX."post
WHERE dateline > {$vbulletin->userinfo[lastvisit]}
");
}
if ($show['rcount'])
{
if ($vbulletin->userinfo['showreputation'])
{
$repcount = $vbulletin->db->query_first_slave("
SELECT COUNT(dateline) AS rcount
FROM ".TABLE_PREFIX."reputation
WHERE userid = {$vbulletin->userinfo[userid]}
AND dateline > {$vbulletin->userinfo[lastrepcheck]}
");
}
}

if ($postcount['pcount'] == 0)
{
$vbulletin->userinfo['pcount'] = $vbphrase['npr_no_posts'];
}
else
{
if ($postcount['pcount'] == 1)
{
$vbulletin->userinfo['pcount'] = construct_phrase($vbphrase['npr_posts'],$postcount['pcount'],$vbphrase['npr_single_post']);
}
else
{
$vbulletin->userinfo['pcount'] = construct_phrase($vbphrase['npr_posts'],$postcount['pcount'],$vbphrase['npr_plural_post']);
}
}

if ($repcount['rcount'] == 0)
{
$vbulletin->userinfo['rcount'] = $vbphrase['npr_no_reputation'];
}
else
{
if ($repcount['rcount'] == 1)
{
$vbulletin->userinfo['rcount'] = construct_phrase($vbphrase['npr_reputation'],$repcount['rcount'],$vbphrase['npr_single_comment']);
}
else
{
$vbulletin->userinfo['rcount'] = construct_phrase($vbphrase['npr_reputation'],$repcount['rcount'],$vbphrase['npr_plural_comment']);
}
}
}

Have a look at this bit:
if ($show['pcount'])
{
$postcount = $vbulletin->db->query_first_slave("
SELECT COUNT(dateline) AS pcount
FROM ".TABLE_PREFIX."post
WHERE dateline > {$vbulletin->userinfo[lastvisit]}
");
}

This is where you can manually tweak the query.
if ($show['pcount'])
{
$postcount = $vbulletin->db->query_first_slave("
SELECT COUNT(dateline) AS pcount
FROM ".TABLE_PREFIX."post
WHERE dateline > {$vbulletin->userinfo[lastvisit]}
AND userid != 13476
");
}
I added the bold text. The userid is my RSS poster bot userid. You can exclude any of the following by changing my "userid" to one on the list below and my "13476" to whatever floats your boat.

I don't recommend anyone do this unless you know what your doing!

I'm only showing you the query used and possibilities to tweak it and the only reason I'm doing that is because Paul M has stated he's not adding any features to this kick ass mod.

Here are the fields than can be played with:
postid
threadid
parentid
username
userid
title
dateline
pagetext
allowsmilie
showsignature
ipaddress
iconid
visible
attach
infraction
reportthreadid

Paul M ~ if you don't like what I've posted here, I totally understand and will delete the post. Just let me know.

hi, Paul
Great mod and installed.
But i got a problem.
While I was installing it on admincp, i got a 500 internal server error. The page can not displayed. And then, i repaired the database through my server cp. After the page displayed for a while then a minute later it shows blank page.
I guess, there are some changes on forum/ files.
I am a newbie so i am not good at like these functions.
Could you write the files which I have to reupload on my forum?
Last backup 08.16.2007, so i dont want to lose last 2 days.

Best wishes,
Ahmet

Version 3.21

The need for manual template edits has now been removed.

If upgrading from a previous version you should remove the two lines below from your navbar template.

<if condition="$show[pcount]">$bbuserinfo[pcount]<br /></if>

<if condition="$show[rcount]"><br />$bbuserinfo[rcount]</if>

(Leaving these in the template should not do any harm, but they are now unnecessary).

Updated from 3.18 (overwrite it) and......

You have 1 New reputation comment.

When you click on that, it takes u to a blank page with the url: http://www.mysite.com/forums/%5BARG:3%20UNDEFINED%5Dusercp.php

when hovering over the rep link it shows this url @ the bottom of the browser:
http://www.mysite.com/forums/[ARG:3 UNDEFINED]usercp.php

ALSO... instead of no new rep comments showing like in 3.18, this time nothing at all shows. only when you have new rep comments does that little text stat show in the navbar

Without a test login there is nothing to check, you cannot see this mod as a guest.

You will only see the new reputation line if you actually receive some (and have reputation display enabled).

i also checked with the rep and it seems to work once i get a new rep... lovely...

Version 3.23

Since it's been asked about a number of times, I have updated the New Posts count to exclude forums that a member does not have permission to view (similar to the Unread Posts modification).

I can't recall if I or someone else asked this before.

Can this and the Display Unread Posts add-on be used together?

The reason I ask and what my users want would be satisfied if they can.

Currently, I use the Display Unread Posts one to have it display any unread posts since their last visit. Other uses want a total count of all unread posts, not just since their last visit. Since there isn't an option to let them choose which way to have the product display, I thought of adding this one as well.

Then, I could set the Display New Posts addon to show all posts since their last login. Then use the Unread Posts addon to display the count of all unread posts.

As long as both addons would display the code, would there be any clashes in the two running at the same time? Would both addons display the code?

I'd like to have it read something like

You have 5 New Posts since your last visit and 20 unread posts total.

I know I'd have to edit the phrasing myself to fix, but aside from that, would what I am looking to be achieve be possible with these two add-ons installed?

I bit of an odd thing to do, but you can run them both together if you want, you should disable the reputation section of one of them, otherwise that will run twice.

I have a bit of a problem....

I modified my site some and got rid of the usual vbulletin section where you'd normally see this. I added a login menu at the top of the site and when people are logged in they would see all this information. Now the new posts information is showing up underneath the Welcome, [username] section and the reputation part of this mod is not showing up at all. This is my code:

<table width="880" border="0" cellpadding="1" cellspacing="1" background="http://img150.imageshack.us/img150/3619/cellpic13702babzk1.png">
<tr>
<td>&nbsp;</td>
<td><font color="#000000" size="1"><phrase 1="$bbuserinfo[username]"><strong>$vbphrase[welcome_x]</strong></phrase></font></td>
<td><div align="center"><if condition="$show[pcount]"><font color="#000000" size="1"><strong>$bbuserinfo[pcount]</strong></font></if>
</div></td>
<td><div align="center"><font size="1"><phrase 1="$pmbox[lastvisitdate]" 2="$pmbox[lastvisittime]"><font color="#000000"><strong>$vbphrase[last_visited_x_at_y]</strong></font></phrase></font></div></td>
<td><div align="center"><font size="1"><if condition="$show['pmstats']"><phrase 1="$vbphrase[unread_x_nav_compiled]" 2="$vbphrase[total_x_nav_compiled]" 3="$session[sessionurl_q]"><font color="#000000"><strong>$vbphrase[private_messages_nav]</strong></font></phrase></if></font></div></td>
<td><div align="center"><font size="1"><if condition="$show['pmwarning']"><strong><phrase 1="$vbphrase[pmpercent_nav_compiled]"><font color="#000000">$vbphrase[your_pm_box_is_x_full]</font></phrase></strong></if></font></div></td>
<td><div align="center"><font size="1"><if condition="$show[npr_reputation]"><font color="#000000"><strong>$vbphrase[npr_reputation]</strong></font></if></font></div></td>
<td class="vbmenu_control"><a href="login.php?$session[sessionurl]do=logout&amp;logouthash=$bbuserinfo[logouthash]" onclick="return log_out('$vbphrase[sure_you_want_to_log_out]')"><strong><font size="1">$vbphrase[log_out]</font></strong></a></td>

</table>

Is there anything I can do to keep this on my site? Or do I have to give it up because it won't work with my custom setup?

You seem to have old template edits in there, mixed with something you've made up yourself. The latest version does not require template edits as it attaches itself to the welcome_x phrase and either the private_messages_nav or last_visited_x_at_y phrase.

Paul M

That's a statement, not a question ;)

Also, all 3.6 versions have had settings to simply turn off either the new posts or reputation part.

I've been asked if I intend to port this to 3.7 - the answer is no - it has always been the intention to replace this version (new posts) with the unread posts (https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showthread.php?t=123886) mod, and only that version will be ported to 3.7.

I've recently changed my forum read marking type to "Database (no automatic forum marking)". However now it tells me I have way too many new posts since my last visit and only goes back to zero if I log out and back in. Help?

Paul M
12-31-2007, 11:25 PM
Not sure what you mean by "way too many posts", but this mod does not care what marking system you use as its not relevant. All it uses is your last visit date.

kiFF
12-31-2007, 11:30 PM
Well, I meant right now it tells me there are 23 new posts. It just keeps going higher and higher. It'd reach 100 if I never logged off and back in. I'm just thinking it should count small periods of inactivity as "your last visit". For example, right now I've responded to all posts and haven't posted anything new in the last 15 minutes. Though it still tells me there are 23 new posts.

Paul M
01-01-2008, 11:06 AM
Sounds like its working perfectly to me.

As time passes the number of new posts is obviously going to go up as more people post - how could the number possibly go down ? (posts don't magically disappear).

How many you have responded to is completely irrelevant to this modification, this is new posts, not unread posts. The fact you have made no new posts does not matter either - other people have, it counts everyones.

Your last visit date is clearly displayed in the welcome box and only changes if you logout, or your session expires. That's standard vb functionality.

The "1 NEW Reputation comment" shows up fine, and from my forums works fine, but if on my Homepage (I have CMPS), it doesn't stick the /forums/usercp.php in there, just /usercp.php

What Phrase/Template do I need to edit, and what do I need to change? I found the private_messages_nav one and last_visited_x_at_y, but I don't know what to change in either of them. Any tips?

The reputation message attaches itself to the private_messages_nav phrase. I would guess that the modification you are using to alter your Private Messages Display (to create the dropdown list) is breaking it.
