BoardTracker Search Mod - Version 2
This search hack replaces the built in vb search with boardtracker (http://www.boardtracker.com) search and results are fully integrated with your board. Search results can be threads from your board or all boards or a select group of boards - your choice!
Once installed, search from the search box on any page will pull results from boardtracker and display them within your board. 'Advanced Search' can still link to the existing vb search script or you can disable or restrict access to specific users (ie. admins, mods, paying members etc).
Results can be formated in any way you want with some simple template variables.
Options control panel allows you to easily switch the boardtracker search mod on or off so you can switch between boardtracker and vb search whenever you want.
The following configuration options/defaults exist:
Switch search on/off
Switch 'safe filter' on/off
Switch global search option on/off
Board ID - you can limit search to just your board, or several boards you choose or ALL boards indexed by boardtracker.
Category ID - you can define a category on boardtracker and searches will only pull results from that category.
Default Sort Order - you can sort results by relevancy or by post date.
Default Search Scope - results can be limited to last day, week, month, year or all time.
Default Search Query - a search term that will be executed whenever the boardtracker search script is called directly with no params.
Find Posts By User - replace the search links on user profiles and postbits.
Internal vB Search Allowed Usergroups - specify which usergroups are allowed to still use the built in vb search (search.php) and redirect all others to the bt search (searchbt.php). Leave empty to allow all users to still access search.php
User selections on the search form override the defaults.
The mod is very easy to install and consists of 1 php script to upload, 1 product xml file to install, 1 simple template edit plus some optional template edits. The xml product file creates one new template, an options panel and a few phrases.
You can see a demo here (http://demo.boardtracker.com/vb) which has the search set to another board for demo purposes (since there are no actual posts on the demo board to search ;) )
If your board is not yet indexed by BoardTracker, make sure to submit it! (http://www.boardtracker.com/boards/) :)
## New features in version 2..
Search posts by username
Search in specific forums
Search in related forums
Search by boardtracker category
RSS feed and alerts for searches
Global search option
Works with bad words search filter
Block or restrict the built in search to specific usergroups
More integration with vb search links (such as from member profile)
More widgets in the control panel to play with ;)
updates:
v2.0.1 - fixed small typo in one phrase setting
v2.0.2 - fixed bug in searchbt.php affecting some people. To upgrade, just upload the new searchbt.php, no other action required.
v2.0.3 - minor html change in templates - not a required upgrade
v2.0.4 - update to searchbt.php
v2.0.5 - small change to 'stopwords' in search_boardtracker template
v2.0.6 - added adv=1 to advanced search link (in plugin) to open search options automatically. Simplified navbar template edits (needed if installing tags mod also). Added 'search this forum' edits.
v2.0.7 - updated for new BoardTracker 2010. To upgrade, upload searchbt.php, install xml, minor template edits (param names)

what would be the advantage of using this not the stock search ?

Well for one thing it takes away all the server load problems normally caused by the internal search. This is the reason why several very large boards are already using this mod now.
Also it provides a real search engine for your board which provides more relevant results and more search options while allowing you to keep the internal search in parallel if you choose, so you lose nothing and gain additional functionality.

Edit:
Made a small change to searchbt.php which should fix that issue although I wasn't able to reproduce the error on my test installation. To upgrade, just upload the latest (2.0.2) searchbt.php and that should be it. Let me know how it goes.

I'm wondering; will this actually return better search results than the default search, as I know, out of experience, that it doesn't really check for relevance but mainly just lists the hits, while search engines like Google check other (probably more important) things.

Good idea, but would be dependent on how quickly your bot spiders the posts? And it won't be able to spider private forums.

Yes. BoardTracker search returns relevant results. Much more relevant than internal search does. And much more so than google.

Indeed it is dependent of the crawler of BoardTracker. But this is much more timely and accurate than one might imagine. Threads are detected very accurately and efficiently. Most threads are indexed less than an hour after creation. In cases of busy forums, this is many times even more frequent.
BoardTracker can index private/hidden forums, but that requires the board administrator to ask for that specifically.

A couple of minor additions..
You can make the search page open the advanced options automatically by adding adv=1 to the link. For example if you use the hardcoded searchbt.php link on the 'advanced search' link in the little dropdown search box on every page which is in the navbar template.
The new link would look like: searchbt.php?adv=1
If you are using the dynamic method rather than just hardcoding the advanced search link in the template then you just need to edit the url in the "Restrict vbsearch to certain usergroups" plugin. Just open that and change this line..
header("Location: http://$bt_host$bt_uri/searchbt.php");
to this..
header("Location: http://$bt_host$bt_uri/searchbt.php?adv=1");
You can also make 'search this forum' link/form work directly also..
Open the FORUMDISPLAY template..
Find..
<form action="search.php?do=process" method="post">
Replace with..
<form action="searchbt.php" method="get">
Find..
<a href="search.php?$session[sessionurl]f=$forumid" rel="nofollow">$vbphrase[advanced_search]</a>
Replace with..
<a href="searchbt.php?$session[sessionurl]frm=$forumid&adv=1" rel="nofollow">$vbphrase[advanced_search]</a>
Find..
<input type="hidden" name="do" value="process" />
<input type="hidden" name="forumchoice[]" value="$forumid" />
<input type="hidden" name="childforums" value="1" />
<input type="text" class="bginput" name="query" size="20" style="width:175px" />
Replace with..
<input type="hidden" name="frm" value="$forumid" />
<input type="text" class="bginput" name="search" size="20" style="width:175px" />

You refer to the tags mod...
It's very simple..
If you have the tags mod installed, you can use a very simple javascript to place a tagcloud whereever you want, even the index page. You can then visually format it it anyway you want.
As described here: https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showthread.php?t=128642
<!-- Tag Cloud -->
<table class="tborder" cellpadding="$stylevar[cellpadding]" cellspacing="$stylevar[cellspacing]" border="0" width="100%" align="center">
<tr>
<td class="tcat">$vbphrase[bt_tag_cloud]</td>
</tr>
<tr>
<td class="alt1" align="center">
<script type="text/javascript" language=Javascript src="http://www.boardtracker.com/cloud/js/?board={$vbulletin->options['bt_tag_boardid']}&items=20&smallsize=6&bigsize=20&hot=e01010&cold=4090a0&days=90&linktype={$vbulletin->options['bt_tag_link_type']}"></script>
</td>
</tr>
</table>
<!-- End Tag Cloud -->
Configuring the following items in the script link: &items=, &smallsize=, &bigsize=, &hot=, &cold= and &days= you can decide exactly how you want the tag cloud to look like :)
I hope in answers the question.

Make sure to also check out our very cool thread tagging and tag search system for vb3.6 here (https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showthread.php?t=128642)!
It allows your members to tag threads and provides a fully integrated search engine - similar in appearance to this mod - which also shows a tag cloud and related tags and provides advanced seach options.
Tag links can use mod_rewrite or standard links and there's lots of options to play with in the control panel. Your tag cloud can easily be put on any page you want - even on other sites!
Tags are stored locally in your db as well as indexed by boardtracker and again all the heavy work of searching is handled by our servers! :cool:
I really like this search engine, but I really dislike that when users click the "New Posts" link in the Navbar, it redirects to a search page and doesn't display posts that the user has not yet read. This is one of my board's most used features so I had to disable boardtracker search so that my users could have the "New Posts" link work the way it is supposed to. Is there an easy fix for this? I really want to turn boardtracker back on... :)

Depends how you set it up - if you block users from accessing the vb search completely (by usergroup) then that will also block 'todays posts' which also uses the vb search script.. if you dont block it then users can still access vb search from the 'advanced search' link and from todays posts etc. - only the default search box in the navbar will use bt search.

Private forums are not spidered by default but they can be if you want them spidered - just let us know. You can also control exactly which forums we spider using the robots.txt file which is explained on our site. Also you get a control panel on BT which lists all your forums before they are spidered so you can easily seee if there are any you dont want spidered or any we missed that you do want spidered.

The search mod renders the page dynamically by fetching the results (via the member's browser) from BoardTracker and rendering it into the web page.
There is no relevancy at all in this case to support XHTML, since the data is not there on page load but only after the JS scripts finished running.
Having said that, most of the mod is XHTML compliant (even though as we said, it makes no difference) and the only part that isn't is the part where the dynamic scripts use the internal HTML template for rendering.
I am interested in knowing though, why would such a thing stop you from using the mod?

Very nice feature. A few questions before I install:
1. I assume that if I wanted private messaging areas searched that I have to give your spider a username/password to gain entry into the appropriate forums. Does this mean you now have all that private content indexed so that anyone can grab portions of that information if they search for those keywords? In other words, unregistered users can now see my protected even if only in part. (Note: I'm not saying this is a defect but I want to clarify)
2. Is this a free service? Your premium service for your searching service is steeper than I could justify for this feature at this point. Does the installation of the mod on my board have free and premium options too?

In order for the private content to be searchable, you will indeed need to confirm/approve the Koalas access to the private forums. In such a case, indeed the content will be searchable by anyone (on individual posts) but it will not give anyone access to thread or to the private forums themselves but only to partial snippet results. Users following the search result links will not gain access to the forum/thread and of course will not be able to post.
2. Is this a free service? Your premium service for your searching service is steeper than I could justify for this feature at this point. Does the installation of the mod on my board have free and premium options too?
Yes, the search mod is free for anyone to use. (The premium service you refer to has nothing to do with the search mod)
Furthermore, our plan is to always offer an option that is totally free for the board owners.
Even if there were to be any changes in the future, we will give an adequate and long prior notice about that.

Thanks for your reply. I was ready to do this but am a little disappointed that it seems like I, and other interested parties, have to wait indefinitely for this mod to be of any use to us. Seems you've had new signups in the hopper for some time while you wait to release an upgrade.
Is this engine large enough and reliable enough to support me down the road? I don't mean to seem snide but it does concern me that all new signups have to take an indefinite pause while upgrades to the code have been ongoing for a month. Does this also mean that existing sites aren't having their sites crawled in the meantime?
When do you expect to be allowing new sites on board again?
BoardTracker
01-21-2007, 06:40 AM
sites that are already in the system are constantly crawled.
New sites will be added very soon as we are releasing the new system very soon.
BoardTrakcker is reliable and large enough to have already supported all the boards that use it for over two years now. This is what we do. This is what we are.

BoardTracker, I was most impressed with your replies over at vBulletin-FAQ (http://www.vbulletin-faq.com/forum/showpost.php?p=10856&postcount=28). In in you said...
"As to why the mod is better than the local vb search - when your board gets big your servers will struggle. vB is a (very good) board software, but it is not a search engine nor should it try to be. Our search mod doesn't replace all features of vb search (yet) but it provides a fast, very relevant and advanced search system with NO LOAD on your servers at all and it can co-exist with the vb search - you can have both."
Is this still true (that you can have both) in the 'new version' you've been referring to? Also, I've submitted my board (http://www.recumbentriders.org/forums) to BoardTracker (http://www.boardtracker.com/) today, so do I need to wait (on verification) before installing this MOD? Very nice work by the way! :up:

I've submitted my board to BoardTracker today, so do I need to wait (on verification) before installing this MOD? Very nice work by the way!
Yes, you need to wait because it won't work until your site has been crawled. I've been waiting for almost 2 months.
I honestly wish there was another site that provided this as they provide little to no information about when they're going to be available. The Cryptic "...we'll be taking new sites soon..." has been the refrain for over 2 months now. I don't know what most people think soon is but 2 months ain't soon in my book.
I'll be honest, I'm beginning to get nervous about whether the site really has the professionalism behind it to remain viable indefinitely. A site that cannot take on new sites for several months and cannot even provide a projected release date is not a professional service.
It is all "nice work" in theory to me. It's nice in theory but I'm extremely skeptical at this point.

adwade: The new version will not only support both just the same as the previous version, but will also support few additional major features.
We have begun these days the enrollment of the new version and hope to be able to add new boards soon after. Once the version is launched, we will of course let everyone know.
SemperFideles: We believe that promising fictitious dates is not a professional alternative. Some things (especially major processes) can not be accurately planned. Some things delay for reasons we can not foresee or control and can do little about.
We however, did not say that new boards will be added right away. On the contrary... we clearly said that addition of new boards, due to the migration, will be delayed.
All during this time we provided service and support to boards already in the system.
What in this makes you feel that the service is unprofessional?
As it has been in the two and a half years, we will continue to show professionalism and remain viable indefinitely. That much we can say accurately.
As for addition of yours and other boards, once the migration process is complete, we will recommence adding boards.
As for what constitutes "soon", this is very subjective. It certainly feels long when delivery time for a new server is three to four weeks.
If that takes one or two more weeks or even fiveĀ
it will happen.

was curious - what is the difference between BoardTracker and vB built-in one?
BoardTracker
06-04-2007, 06:45 AM
There are several significant differences..
All the search processing and indexing is done on boardtracker servers which removes a lot of load from your servers.
There are none of the forced limits that vb search has such the not allowing searches with 3 characters or less, having to wait 30 seconds between searches, etc.
You can if you choose include results from multiple boards in your search - for example if you run several boards you can circulate traffic between them or you can set up traffic trades with other board admins and include each others results in your boards search.
You can also enable 'global search' as an option for your users - this puts a checkbox on the search page so users can perform the search on all boards in boardtracker - why send them to google to search when you can keep it all within the 'boardscape'.
You can also if you want have both search systems active - default search (from the little dropdown search box) can use BT search while 'advanced search' can still link to the built in vb search.
You can also define usergroups who can still use the vb search (mods/admins for example or perhaps paying members) while everyone else uses the BT search.

I think the real answer is this: you can actually use the built-in search option from vBulletin.
This has got to be the longest "...we're completing upgrades and about to add boards soon..." promise. I half expect folks not to answer the posts on this.
Look at the date that I first asked about this mod: Dec 06. That's 6 months ago.
I wouldn't trust your board to a service this unprofessional. Professional services give release dates vice ambiguous "...we'll be adding you at any time...." I wouldn't trust important data to them either.

The fact is the service has been running fine for years and those boards using this mod have had no problems and continue to use it and benefit in the form of greatly reduced server loads.
Does google give you any guarantees about when or even if they will index your site? They do not. They will index your site when they get to it if you are lucky. They also dont generally give any specific dates when new features will be ready.. until they are ready. And when was windows 2000 released? or office 2003? :) ...
The new system we have been relentlessly working on for over six months now, will be ready when it is ready and not before. Would you prefer a 'rushed out the door' system that hasn't been tested properly and could be unstable or would you prefer to rely on a system that has been developed properly and tested thoroughly?
Believe us, noone is more eager to see the new version out than us. But as much as we'd like to get it finished sooner, not everything is under our control and external issues have caused some significant delays. However, Rome wasn't built in a day and the new version of BoardTracker wont be either but it will be ready quite soon and is in fact being tested privately on some boards right now. We are actually indexing millions of posts a day into the new system at the moment and already have several times more forums covered than the current version. When we are confident that it is 'ready for action' we will release it fully and any boards in the submission queue will be indexed shortly after. Our goal in life is indexing all the discussions in all the boards out there, especially those that unfortunately had to wait.
Regardless, this mod is for the current version of BT and any boards already indexed can use it right now (if your board is already indexed) with no problems. It can be used to replace the vb search fully or it can complement the vb search so users have access to both to suit their needs.

i need some assistance i found something with your script that my forum thread tool won't work unless i remove it form navbar template can you fix it please it was confirmed from another coder.
this is your instructions to add in the navbar template:
OPEN: 'Navigation / Breadcrumb Templates >> navbar'
==============================
FIND:
<form action="search.php?do=process" method="post">
<table cellpadding="4" cellspacing="1" border="0">
<tr>
<td class="thead">$vbphrase[search_forums]</td>
</tr>
==============================
BELOW ADD:
<!-- start bt search mod -->
<if condition="$vboptions['boardtracker_search_active']">
</form>
<form action="searchbt.php" method="get">
<tr>
<td class="vbmenu_option" title="nohilite">
<input type="hidden" name="s"
value="$session[sessionhash]" />
<div><input type="text" class="bginput"
name="search" size="25" tabindex="1001" /><input type="submit" class="button"
value="$vbphrase[go]" tabindex="1004" /></div>
</td>
</tr>
<else />
<!-- end bt search mod -->
==============================
after i added this here:
<!-- start bt search mod -->
<if condition="$vboptions['boardtracker_search_active']">
</form>
<form action="searchbt.php" method="get">
<tr>
<td class="vbmenu_option" title="nohilite">
<input type="hidden" name="s"
value="$session[sessionhash]" />
<div><input type="text" class="bginput"
name="search" size="25" tabindex="1001" /><input type="submit" class="button"
value="$vbphrase[go]" tabindex="1004" /></div>
</form>
</td>
</tr>
<else />
<!-- end bt search mod -->

We'll be releasing a new version of this mod in the next few days for vb3.6.7 anyway so maybe that will fix the problem you are having.
If you don't have vb3.6.7 then let me know which version of vb and which version of this mod you have.

For anyone using this search mod who wants to try it with the new system, you can do that now.. but bear in mind it should be considered BETA and not all data on your board will be indexed or up to date and not all boards submitted are yet included although at least twice as many boards are now in the new system and more will be added soon.
The way to try it is simply to edit the bt search results template and replace this..
http://www.boardtracker.com/search-v2.js
with this..
http://v2.boardtracker.com/search-v3.js
Additionally you can add the following html somewhere near the search term input box..
<input type="checkbox" name="oplimit" id="BT_OPLIMIT" /> Original posts only
This adds a checkbox for choosing to search in all posts (replies) or original posts only (threads). You can of course change the text to whatever you want.
There are some additional changes you can make which enable access to many more search features however they will be announced later.
If you have any problems let me know and again I must stress that this is beta and so there *might* be problems (hopefully nothing more than simply partial coverage) but these will be fixed and coverage is increasing daily - currently we index many millions of posts every day.
puertoblack2003 - haven't been able to replicate your problem yet, perhaps a version issue between vb, this mod and maybe some other mods we have installed on our test system. Will try some more versions on a clean system soon though and hopefully get that issue fixed for you.

BoardTracker no longer appears to be actively indexing boards. Is this correct?

We are still actively indexing boards - all boards newly added to boardtracker are now indexed here.. http://v2.boardtracker.com
The v1 system also still runs and indexes boards that were previously added there.

Just a quick question on the software itself. Looks like a nice mod but when I was looking at the boardtracker site I couldn't find any TOS. Is it just hard to find on the site?

You can find info about BoardTracker here: http://v2.boardtracker.com/cgi-bin/about.pl
Other than that, you can ask anything here on the forum or through BoardTracker's support email.
