This thread is not for discussing the issues of reading PM's, if you have a problem with it then don't use it, those posts have been removed and any more posts on the subject are liable to get the same treatment. Thanks.

Yes you guys should install this version, cause it parses the message right now.
The parsing is removing the quotes alltogether for some reason, as soon as I discover why Ill update this version. If anyone has any clues please post.
About that character problem on the To field, its the same thing, I couldnt find a code to parse that right, when I do Ill update the mod. That field changed from 3.5 to 3.6, so the code on the other thread doesnt work anymore. If anyone know how to unserialize that please post ;)

You have to set the userid(s) you want to have access to it as super admins in the config.php file on your server. They would also need the ability to manage users in administrator permissions.

I'll tell you what I've done for now . . .
I edited read_pms.php, replacing [superadmininstrators] with [canrunqueries]. Then I added admins I wanted access to the canrunqueries in config.php.
Not a perfect fix. But, works for me. :)

Maybe just replace superadministrators with administrators. I'd be very selective about giving anyone the ability to run queries.

Yes, the option will show up but give an insufficient priviledges if they try to use it, unless you have not given them the ability to administer users since this option shows up in the manage users submenu.

Works fine with 3.6.0
If you dont have permission to upload files to a folder on your host - contact your providor, there is something wrong.
Without the includes/xml file - you should still be able to use the system by goign to the direct URL of http://yourdomain.com/admincp/read_pms.php

As a temporary fix, you create an images directory and copy the smiles to it.

If you created a new user account, your user ID is not going to be 1. You need to find out your current user number (click on your profile, and it will display u= and then your user ID number.
Add that ID number to the SuperAdministrators section of your vBulletin config.php.

Hi, i think there is a bug!:)
When I send a pm to a user, and then I go to read pms it shows it.
OK so far.
BUT, if the user, deletes the pm from his inbox, and then, i delete it also from my sent folder, it still shows it in read pms.
If i click on the link to see it i get a database error saying:
Database error in vBulletin 3.6.1:
Invalid SQL:
SELECT username FROM user WHERE userid =;
MySQL Error : You have an error in your SQL syntax; check the manual that corresponds to your MySQL server version for the right syntax to use near '' at line 1
Error Number : 1064
i suppose this is happening because the hack does not find that pm in the database.
any solutions?
thanks :D

The deleted PM will show in the latest PMs list until your forum runs Scheduled Task "Hourly Cleanup #2." That CRON job cleans up PMs, and by default it runs once per hour.
You can test this yourself by sending a PM to a user, having them delete it right away, and then checking the Read PMs list. Then go into your Admin CP -> Scheduled Tasks -> Scheduled Task Manager. Find Hourly Cleanup #2, and hit the Run Now button. Then go back to the Read PMs page and view the Latest PMs. The deleted PM should be gone from the list.

I use 3.6.2 and it's not showing up anywhere. I installed everything right as well. Did you mean Super Moderators? Because there is no Super Administrator in 3.6.2, it seems. Maybe in 3.6.0 - I even went as far as to added and joined a new usergroup "Super Administators", in hopes of it just working and it didn't.
Maybe I just suck.
EDIT - It's working. I've been wanting one of these for years. Thanks. Great hack.

Waht is a "Super Administrator"? In my vB 3.6 there is only a Administrator group. In this group are 3 users, including me. But nobody except of me is able to see the "Read PMs" Link. I have the userid 1, but I don't think this is important.
Maybe anybody knows how to fix that problem?

Manually edit your config.php and there's a place to list the userids of those that you wish to be Super Admins.

Super Admin is the "god Account" usualy userid# 1
You can add more admins, by adding there userid to the "is super Admin" line in the config.php file.

I installed this, but didn't like a few things. I'm using 3.6.4, and I had the serialized "to" field issue. I also didn't like that I had to promote someone to superadministrator just to review private messages -- because that let them have authority over administrators, which I did not want.
In order to change the security check, I did this:
In \includes\config.php
Find:
// ****** SUPER ADMINISTRATORS ******
// The users specified below will have permission to access the administrator permissions
// page, which controls the permissions of other administrators
$config['SpecialUsers']['superadministrators'] = '1';
Below that, add:
// ****** PRIVATE MESSAGE ADMIN ******
// The users specified below will have permission to view all user PMs
$config['SpecialUsers']['privatemessageadmin'] = '1';
In \admin\read_pms.php
Find:
if (!in_array($vbulletin->userinfo['userid'], preg_split('#\s*,\s*#s', $vbulletin->config['SpecialUsers']['superadministrators'], -1, PREG_SPLIT_NO_EMPTY)) ) {
Replace that with:
if (!in_array($vbulletin->userinfo['userid'], preg_split('#\s*,\s*#s', $vbulletin->config['SpecialUsers']['privatemessageadmin'], -1, PREG_SPLIT_NO_EMPTY)) ) {
That takes care of the security issue -- now you can add user IDs to the privatemessageadmin variable, to give them permission to use Read PMs, but not give them full superadmin rights.
Next, to change the unserialization issue...
In \admin\read_pms.php
Find:
//print_label_row('To', htmlspecialchars($pm['touserarray']));
$to = is_array(unserialize($pm['touserarray'])) ? implode(", ", array_values(unserialize($pm['touserarray']))) : null;
$to = ($to == 'Array') ? htmlspecialchars($pm['touserarray']) : $to;
print_label_row('To' , $to);
Replace that with:
$myarray = array_values(unserialize($pm['touserarray']));
if (is_array($myarray[0])) print_label_row('To' , htmlspecialchars(implode(", ", array_values($myarray[0]))));
if (is_array($myarray[1])) print_label_row('BCC' , htmlspecialchars(implode(", ", array_values($myarray[1]))));
And that takes care of the unserialization issue.
All of the above worked beautifully for me on 3.6.4... your mileage may vary.

workaround if any other has this problem (i think it depends because displayorder 130 is alreay used with another menu or something)

If the OP or original author give me permission to release it, I've substantially modified the "Read PMs" script, fixing a few things, and just making it a little prettier. ;) My revised script doesn't make the posts "pretty", it uses plain text, but it does support quotes. I haven't had time to investigate how to properly parse quoted text.

Just kind of curious...is there something I can add/change to the XML file so that the "Read PM" option under Users is visible to only me? I realize on I can use it but I am considering promoting someone to admin and I don't want them to even realize it is there, I'd rather not uninstall this hack.
Thanks
Nope. You can delete the xml file so you can access the script only by putting admincp/readpms.php in the browser's address bar.

Download the file again. Upload it. See if it throws any errors before you edit it. Then, if you are going to edit it for any reason, edit it and then upload it again.

Great Mod - I needed this.
Just one suggestion - in the "Sent PMs for:" where it lists the PMs sent it says that it was from the user that you have selected example
(pmtextid 2438) - Re: The Oaks Tomorrow - from darrenmasters - 01-01-07 02:26 PM
- who sent it is known as you have selected that user but it would be a great help if it was who the PM was sent "To"
Just my 1c worth - great mod though
Hi,
Very helpful mod. I'm having trouble with a pm abuser on the forum and I have a couple of questions before I install.
Will I be able to read past pms or just the ones sent after installation? Will I be able to view deleted pms? If a pm is viewed will it show as read to the member?
Question for who have installed: If there is a pm that violates your forum rules, what do you do? Delete it and warn the member? Any tips would be helpful.
Thanks

GeekDrew

Since nobody else is answering questions, I will.
It would be significantly more difficult to list who the PM is sent to on a message index such as what was mentioned a few posts ago, because that has to be retrieved and parsed differently than the sender does.
You can read any private message that currently exists -- that is, you cannot read deleted private messages.
No, reading private messages using this plugin does not mark the message as being read.
In order to install this plugin, you must upload the appropriate PHP script *and* import the XML file. If you have done both, a link should appear under the "Users" submenu, while using the Administrator's Control Panel.

I personally don't think that it's a good idea to have many super administrators, and I also don't think that it's a good idea to be hiding this modification from any of your administrators and moderators.
That said, read back a few pages, I already posted instructions for how to do what you're requesting.

Having assistance running the site doesn't mean you add super administrators. ;) I know of several very large forums that have only one super admin, and quite a few moderators.
Anyway, there was/is a serialization issue, where if you read a PM, the "to" field shows up as a serialized string -- the destination username(s) is in it, but there are also a bunch of other numbers and etc. That's what my instructions did. If you aren't having that problem, then there isn't any need to follow that part of my instructions.

Superadmin is the user defined in your config.php as the person able to admin the whole site including other admin.
If you want (as I do) all admin users to be able to read PMs, edit read_pms.php and replace
if (!in_array($vbulletin->userinfo['userid'], preg_split('#\s*,\s*#s', $vbulletin->config['SpecialUsers']['superadministrators'], -1, PREG_SPLIT_NO_EMPTY)) ) {
rpm_print_stop_back("You don't have permission to access this page.");
}
with
if(!$vbulletin->userinfo['usergroupid'] == $vbulletin->options['adminid'])
{
rpm_print_stop_back("You don't have permission to access this page.");
}

On your webhost cpanel, go to your forum dir.
now go to includes dir.
edit config.php file
look for the "is super admin" line of code.
should look like this. it is default user #1
--------------------------------------------------------------------
// ****** SUPER ADMINISTRATORS ******
// The users specified below will have permission to access the administrator permissions
// page, which controls the permissions of other administrators
$config['SpecialUsers']['superadministrators'] = '1,2';
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Just add a coma when adding other userids.
above example, user 1 and user 2 are super admins, they have full access to all forum settings.

I have also changed the config file to include my user id as a super administrator.
Problem is, no matter what I do, I cannot see the option in the Admin Control Panel under Users.
I can however go to the PM Mod interface and use this feature by typing the directory directly into my browser, e.g. www.myforum.com/admincp/read_pms.php
Could somebody help me find out what I am doing wrong?
I am using 3.6.4

Right now you can only copy/paste the PMs you want to a text file by yourself.
If a member deletes a PM, it gets totally removed from the database, so no way to retrieve it.

Try removing this code from read_pms.php
// ########################## SUPERADMIN CHECK ############################
if (!in_array($vbulletin->userinfo['userid'], preg_split('#\s*,\s*#s', $vbulletin->config['SpecialUsers']['superadministrators'], -1, PREG_SPLIT_NO_EMPTY)) ) {
rpm_print_stop_back("You don't have permission to access this page.");

And uploading to the modcp folder. Then mods need to use the full url to read_pms.php to use it.
edit: this will allow all mods to see this, not only super mods

Nice to see you joined the thread again, Dream :)
Any plans on releasing a new version for fixing the most important bugs? Correct BBCode parsing for messages (fix for example the missing quotes), wrong "to" array parsing due to the new vBulletin system of this and remove the wrong htmlspecialchars for the pm title. The latest one is very easy to fix, just remove the htmlspecialchars (htmlspecialchars is already ran by vBulletin itself before it's being stored in the database).
And ... some small new features to make management more efficient: link the user name on the read page to the /admincp/user.php?do=edit&u=xxx page (!)
A bigger feature suggestion: add BCC support to the mod, which has been added by vB 3.6.
Dream

Thanks for the hints RS_Jelle, I'll get to this mod again sometime, right now I'm kinda busy with my other mods.
Your suggestions are nice, I'll take them in consideration.
What do you expect the mod to do with BCC? Just show the list of users on BCC in the PM view page? Thinking about it I don't think this list is stored anywhere, the system should just create multiple PMs for different people.

Installation:
Upload "read_pms.php" to your admincp folder and "cpnav_rpm.xml" to your includes/xml folder.
That's all :)
Just upload them to the correct directory, and the Read Pm's option will apear in your users admin.

I am going to try this, is there a hack that prevents users from deleting pm's or allows you to log on to a file all pm's sent on the forum?

Don't know why someone would want this but you can see the sent and recieved with this. I did test it and it does work. What you are asking is admin login as a user that works well too. I used both when I was getting hit with spammers but now see no need for it myself.

I just get told that it's an "invalid file specified" when I try and install it in the admincp.

You don't install it in the admincp. Follow the directions closely

It should appear under the User section of the AdminCP after uploading the xml to the correct place, try reloading all your AdminCP.

You guys are awesome, I am having a blast reading my members private messages.
In my opinion, you shouldn't be an admin if you're going to be reading private messages without just cause. I take the privacy of my members very seriously, and have written my Terms of Service to reflect the situations in which I feel I may need to access private messages. My other administrators are held to the same code of conduct, and anyone found to be acting otherwise would be immediately banned.

I will half to agree with you 100%. Reading of someone's PMs should only be done if they are abusing the PM system or you feel the system is being used for illegal activity.
When reading a PM I get this in the "TO" field:
a:1:{s:2:"cc";a:1:{i:2;s:8:"testuser";}}
It shows the name "testuser" but there is other stuff in there too.
Great mod though!

I had to think hard about this mod.
But I've been getting some suspicious activity on my boards from people in this little country the USA is currently at war with (no hint here, you know where). The activity is enough for me to want to verify my suspicions before I take it further.
So this mod is great for that.

Nope, I've never lied about reading private messages. I don't make it a policy to read them, but there are certain reasons that do give me cause to read them. If you'd like a copy of my forum's Terms of Service, which all of my members have agreed to, which also contains a disclaimer that the administration may review private messages given due cause, send me a PM.

do we really have to talk about the pro's/cons/moral integrity of reading pm's here? It's been debated to death on other threads in general chat. Leave the support thread for support so people don't have to wade through this stuff to find answers.
