i was wondering.. if it's possible.. to create a hack that modifies the ban system to where you can ban them from the whole site.. or.. if you should choose .. to ban them from a specific subforum.. for instance, you have a troublesome member that likes to go into a specific forum.. lets say General for this conversation.. and likes to go in there and spam all over the place.. then go back and use the edit button to lie his way out of getting trouble w/ the moderators.. yet behaves himself in every other subforum.. typically miserable users would handle this guy great.. or even a error 404 ban temporarily.. but.. if you were just wanting to ban him from that specific subforum he keeps causing problems in.. how would someone go about doing that w/o compromising the rest of the ban system covering the whole board and w/o compromising inferno warning system 1.3? ... or alternatively.. give him a .. "time out".. which imo would also be.. comical.. if there was an addon to forumhome which would display a list of users currently in "time out".. .. (just an idea). where a time out acts the same as banning the user from specific subforum(s).

Yes, you can do this using access masks.

cool.. now to find a coder willing to undertake the creation of this hack. personally i think it'd be a great tool to have to deal with troublesome members who otherwise are a great help to your forums. ah well.. now i needa find a coder.. any takers?
btw.. although i realize this is the wrong place for this.. i'm absurdly curious, what private message notification hack does this forum use?.. i love it but don't see it anywhere.. perhaps i'm just not looking in the right place. any help?

Access masks are not a modification, they are a default feature.

this i realize, i'm talking about building a hack around them that will make putting someone in "timeout" as simple as 2 or so clicks w/o having to venture into the acp. then taking the names of those in timeout and having them post to a box or area on forumhome that's viewable to selected usergroups and then having it as simple as 2 or so clicks to remove someone from "timeout". which by definition is an unpaid hack request imo.
no coders willing to take the challenge?

Which version of vB are you running?
If you are running 3.6.0 you can set the infractions system to do this in a click or two from the frontend of your forum.

I recommend upgrading to either 3.5.5 or 3.6.0 as there is a security flaw in 3.5.4
As you are looking for specific functionality which is built into 3.6.0, I would advise to upgrade to that. Otherwise, a modification will be required, and I don't think too many people will be actively developing modifications for 3.5.x now that 3.6.0 (Final/Gold/Stable/Whatever you want to call it) has been released.

you could also try creating a subscription that is not active and attached to a user group, make that user group not able to access that particular forum, then when the subscription expires after x amount of time they become a normal member again.

forgive my stupidity on this.. but when i upgrade.. will all the custom work i've done to my forums have to be redone.. eg.. template edits, skins w/ customizations, etc ?

you will need to redo some of your templates. they will be highlighted when the upgrade script has finished.
