We have used out own template but have yet to really put a lot of addons into it. I would love honest feedback from the experts here on which hacks/addons they feel would be best suited for a site like ours.

Very stylish design. I think you've captured what an online magazine should look like. My only suggestion is on the forum, if you're not planning to use the left sidebar space you don't need it. Other than that I don't have any other critique...Not that I can think of, anyway. :D
