View Full Version : Show Thread Enhancements - Who has read a Thread
Paul M
07-30-2006, 10:00 PM
This modification is no longer available or supported.
This displays who has read a thread, and the time they last looked at it.
Hovering over a name will show when the member last viewed the thread, and (optionally) what IP address they viewed it from (Note: as of v3.34 you can only view the ip addresses in the 'View-All' display).
There is now an option to allow a thread author to view who has read their thread when they are not in one of the allowed usergroups. The IP and number of days restrictions still apply.
A new time set/reset facility has been added. Members allowed to use this facility can click on the 'set' link and it will set a personal 'cutoff' time - only showing who has read the thread after that time. The time can be reset as many times as you want, and also completely cleared again. When using this facility there is also a link to allow you to view a seperate list of all readers of the thread.
A cron job has now been added that can (optionally) delete records from the whoread table that are over a certain age - this is provided for large forums where the number of table entries can start to reach a million or more after 12 months. The delete age is a setting in the ACP.
Warning: When using the set/reset option - there is only a limited capacity of entries per thread (several thousand) - therefore you should only allow this feature to be used by a limited number of people - typically Staff usergroups. Allowing all members to use it will probably slow down your forum and cause errors if more than about 3000 members set a date on one thread.
There are settings for the following (in vBulletin Options > Who Has Read a Thread) ;
1. Turn the system on/off.
2. Restrict the display to certain usergroups
3. Restrict the IP display to certain usergroups.
4. Restrict the display to a set number of days.
New in v3.28
5. Option to allow thread author to view who read information.
6. Option to turn on the who read cutoff date (reset) function
7. Restrict use of reset function to certain usergroups.
8. Option to set whoread data records to be cleaned out after xxx days.
New in v3.39
9. Clicking on a user will display a page of their thread viewing history, most recent first.
Note: When using option 4 or the set/reset facility, the data is still kept beyond this limit, so they can be changed at any time.
Download the zip, extract the XML file and import using the vb Product Manager.

Download the zip, extract the XML file and import using the vb Product Manager.
This is the first Product I've tried to D/L & Install, so bare with me here...
I D/L'd the file, unzipped it, uploaded it via the Product Manager and it all seemed to work just fine.
However, when I logged into my vBulletin Forum (v3.6.0) I didn't see any difference. So I went back and reviewed the Thread Display Options and noticed you needed to be in groups 5,6,7 to see the effect. I added a trailing 2 to that list, saved it, then went and logged in as a registered user just to see what it looked like. Still no difference. Lastly, I removed the trailing 2, then went and logged in as Admin to see it. Still no difference.
What am I doing wrong, or what have I failed to do?
Thanxx.

Hovering over a name will show when the member last viewed the thread, and (optionally) what IP address they viewed it from.
Maybe I'm just misunderstanding what it is supposed to do.
Do you mean when your cursor 'hovers' over a name that the info should pop up so you can see it?
Or do you mean, 'hovering' above the name in a banner you should see this?
Here's what my screen looks like logged in as Admin and as a Normal Registered user viewing a post by adwt.

Sorry, Paul... this mod killed my forum... this doesn't work for large forums I think... he had topics with 2000 users in 24 hours... I uninstalled and everything worked fine...
Paul M
08-13-2006, 11:43 PM
Define "killed".
I haven't tried 2000 members, but our live forum has threads where 500/600 members have read them, and it doesn't even blink. Mind you, I think a list of 2000 members would look a bit overpowering in a thread anyway.
MaLTRaiN
08-14-2006, 12:31 PM
"Killed" the conection... I put it and every was fine... of course, every page started with cero... 24 hours later, many pages had 1500, 2000 (Silent Hill release, for example) and more... so the conection went down gradually... at last, I uninstalled this and everything return to normally.
But I liked this mod... maybe if someone figures how solve this, I'll install it again.
Thanks anyway, man. And sorry for my english.

Hi Paul,
I'm planning on upgrading my forums from 3.5.3 to 3.6.0. I currently have this hack installed, is there any way I can carry over the current "who viewed" data to the new 3.6.0 system?
Also, is there any way you can make the who viewed box collapsed by default? I know we can tick it to be uncollapsed or not but some of my users aren't aware of the hack and they could really care less who viewed the thread. I think it would be a lot easier for it to be always collapsed by default no matter if you uncollapsed it already or not.
Thanks

Upgrading to 3.6 will not affect the data.

No, there is no option to do that - but if they collapse it themselves, it will stay collapsed until they change it again.

Paul, how's this hack doing, in term of using system resources?
should it uses a lot of queries, memory?
Paul M
09-26-2006, 09:24 AM
It runs one update query when you read a thread, and one select for the display (so basically two queries per thread). The resource use of those queries is small as the table is indexed.
The table can grow, especially on a busy forum, for example, we have been running this for six months now, and the table now has 450,000 rows (we have 47,000 threads, 500+ members visit per day). Again, as it's indexed this is not really a big deal, nevertheless, the next update will have a cron job to remove entries over a certain age (12 months by default).
Taking one of our busiest threads, the update takes 0.00046 seconds, the select takes 0.02508 seconds.

Version 3.28 uploaded tonight - this has a number of new facilities ;
* Option to allow a thread author to view who has read their thread.
* A new personal set/reset facility - allows a member to set a personal 'cutoff' time - only showing who has read a thread after that time.
* A cron job to (optionally) delete whoread records over a certain age.
More detals are in the main post.
To upgrade simply download the new (zipped) product file and import it in the normal manner.

Sorry, there is no chance of me adding new stuff to the old 3.5 hacks - I only develop on the latest series, and indeed, as of 2007 I will be cutting back on the support of the 3.5 series as well.
I can't see any reason this would not work on 3.5 - the main thing stopping it is the fact that the product won't install because of the execution order elements. In theory, if you edited them out of the XML you should be able to install this on a 3.5 forum (I won't support such a setup if it doesn't work though). The cron will not install.

it doesn't list the people who have readed on some threads now after a while.
on the beginning it listed all threadreaders correctly. now i recognized that on some new threads no reading people exists (i mean no members exists who readed the thread, in the list), but many members readed the thread already.
the old hack works fine (for 3.5) with all threads. the new hack must have a bug somewhere because i set all settings surely correctly (its not my first installed hack). the first five hours it works and then on some threads beginner to be no new readers displayed. i have a clean 3.62 engl. version.
i needed to uninstall and i hope on a soon fix. till it i will use your older working one.

Hmm, do you have a value set in the Table Clean-up setting ?
Paul M
10-10-2006, 06:07 PM
There was a bug in the records clean-up code - the setting was being treated as hours, not days, so if you set it to (say) 180, it would remove records after a week, not six months. The default on installation was for this option to be disabled, so you would only be affected if you changed this. To upgrade simply import the new product XML.

Are you trying to install on a 3.5.4?
I installed the update but I members that visted are not showing up.
Is there a special cron job that I must setup in order for the viewing members to be listed?
Thanks in advance.

I already have version (3.21) installed of this mod.
do i have to uninstall the one before first then install this one?
is the list of names under the thread will be deleted after the update?

No, do not uninstall, just import the new version (with overwrite = yes). The names will not be lost, but you may need to redo your settings.

TY Paul, installed again on 3.6.x.
In next release, will be possible to let date to be set as vBulletin settings are.
Example I have set to display today, yesterday on date display. so will be amazing that also this mod will follow the rules set in vB display parameters

I double checked the settings (admin is usergroup 6) and all seems to be set correctly.
What else could be causing no members to be listed?
I have posted a graphic of my settings screen and a graphic showing the who viewed table with no names in it.
This specific topic has 47 replies and over 400 views.
Paul M

Do you actually have records in the whoread table ?
Do you actually have records in the whoread table ?
I have a vb3_whoread table and in that table there are over 3300 records.
I have attached a graphic showing the first page of records.
Paul M

Perhaps I should have been clearer, I meant do you have records for that specific thread.
Also, those records displayed are very old (and missing the ip address ?) can you sort them in dateline order (desc) and post the most recent ones.

Hi Paul, do you mean do I have who read fields in the thread record?
I just want to make sure this is what I should look for.
I will also sort the table by dateline order and post.
Ok, I took a guess at what fields you wanted in the thread table.
The first graphics are of a single record of a recent topic that has over 200 views. I had to break the graphic up into two because of the size.
One of the who fields is empty the other has a value.
The third graphic is the vb3_whoread table by dateline and descending.
Thank you for all your time in helping me with this issue. I appreciate it very much.
Paul M

The reason none are being displayed is clear from the whoread table - the newest record in it dates from 17 Aug 2006. Something is stopping the mod from adding records to the database.
Check the plugins and make sure you have the "Display Thread Readers (2)" plugin and it's enabled.
If it is then I would say another plugin connected to the showthread_complete hook is broken and preventing this from running - change the above plugin execution order from 5 to 4, that should mean it gets run first.
If that does mean records start getting added again then you should change it back to 5 and start disabling other plugins on that hook until it starts working - you have then found the broken hook.
I disabled all plugins that had a showthread_complete hook and that didn't work.
So I disabled all plugins except CMPS and that didn't work either.
There is a hook with showthread_complete under the Vbulletin heading (refer to graphic) that I didn't touch because it looks like it's a core vb hook.
I have done the above and uninstalled the mod and reinsntalled and have the same problem.
Any other ideas?
Thanks in advance.

There are no core vb hooks.
That looks like a very old plugin from an early version of my mod. Disable it.
Other than that, there is nothing I can do unless you want to give me admin access.

Hello Paul,
Would it be possible to improve your - great - hack in order to have an other feature which would allow to see who have read the thread since the last post were posted ?
There would be 'Who has read a Thread' and 'Who has read the thread since last post'.
Cheers.

Funnily enough I was looking at a way to do that, and have included it in the "View-All" display, which is now available at all times, not just when you have a cutoff set (ip display is now in that view only).
I few other internal changes have been made, I'm currently testing v3.35 for release later.

Yep, I read in your mind :D
But, there may be a slight bug because a new thread with one post has been read by three users in the same afternoon, but two of them are in View all, "Who Viewed This Thread", and the third is in "Last Post".
In fact, they all read this only post quite in the same time.
Is there something I did not understand ?

Paul a question for future developments: it's possibile to build this hack with some features like the following:
1) how many time a user has seen the thread
2) when the user has seen the thread (day and hour)
i think these (hoped) modifications can be very usefull for the admins and moderators ... in my prevously forum (a phpBB) i had installed a modfication that tells me ALL the activities of a specific user, i always could know all with this hack i only could know IF a specific user has seen a thread ...
hope that i explained well what i wanna say :)

In reverse ;
2. The Date Time they last read a thread is already there - hover over the username, or click on "View-All".
1. It may be possible to have a simple count of how many times a person has read a thread, as well as the last read time. I will certainly never keep a record of all the dates/times - as that would be a huge amount of data.

This is an incredibly useful mod that I'm grateful to have found. It is great to be able to see who has read your threads, and when they saw them (to see if it's likely that they read your post within that thread).
Fior a site admin with OCD tendencies, it's an unbelievable tool to see where your users have been. By using phpadmin, or even just entering sql queries directly in admincp, you can easily see everywhere someone has been:
SELECT * FROM `whoread` WHERE userid = 121 order by dateline
will return all records of where userID 121 has been, in date order. You can then go to a browser window and type
"http://www.yourforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=21138"
and substitute one of the threadID's you saw in the SQL query for 21138. This makes me think that if someone has some free time, it would be a great addition to the admincp to create a panel that does nothing but this. From that panel, you could click on a username, and it would bring up a page with the list of threads they've visited, which could then be sorted by threadID, date, whatever. You could easily find out how people are navigating through your site, in order to make conscious decisions about how to streamline or improve that navigation.

I have another question.
I would like to request that you are only able to see the list after you click a button (like the View-All Button now). I don´t want that everytime a thread is loading the hole list at the bottum has to be loaded too. I noticed that it took a little longer to load a thread through that (one more querry, don´t know?).
So is it possible to show just a button in the threads and only load the list after you click it?
This button can also be on the top beside "thread options" or so, but that´s not so important...

Hi Paul ... :)
Installed and it seems to work fine for forums that are read/write....
We use reference library forums where users can view "canned" threads, but not respond to them. In those, it says "0" users, even though the number of reads of the thread indicate high amounts. ie: 50+
Any suggestions? Does it start building the database from the time I install, so those threads that haven't been read in a while will show "0" until people start reading them after your mod has been installed?

ps: I'm also not getting IP addresses displayed (Display ALL), even though I have the option turned ON for 5,6,7 and I'm an administrator. It just shows the IP address for myself?

Sadly, as time travel has not yet been invented, it cannot tell you who read something before it was installed.
I think the ip address function probably only works on primary usergroup (I don't have time to start checking that atm, as I'm off out).

Thanks Paul ... :)
I thought that might be the case, but apparently with some forums it has been invented. :D
I'm able to read threads in our general discussions forum and at the bottom with the mod installed and truned on, they show doezens of user entires with dates that go back weeks, even immediately after the install.

ps: Paul, I forgot to ask.... does this mod impact system performance greatly? Thanks...
.... and I've also just noticed that IP addresses have started appearing. It looks like they started recording sometime after the mod was installed....

Actually, it can sort of go back in time - I forgot that if you have been using the vb database thread marking system, it will read that data and use it to populate it's own database - however, for performance issues on installation, it only reads the first 10,000 marking records.

Dumb question: if I turn it off, entry are not inserted in the database, am I right? :o

Depends what you mean by "turn off".
If you turn off the display (in the options) then data will continue to be collected so that when you turn the display on again, it will still be correct. If you disable the mod then no more data will be collected.

so...
vBulletin Options -> Who has read a thread -> No (data are beeing collected)
Plugin Manager -> Disable (dare are not beeing collected anymore)
For now, I chose "Table Clean-Up" 10 days.
Just one other question: when the clean up is performed (hourly, daily...)?
Thank you, this mod is really really useful

I have 200 threads a day each one read by more than 300-400 users (at least one time, sometimes more than one time for users).
I am wondering... is it bandwidth-expensive?
Paul M
04-16-2007, 11:55 AM
Define 'expensive'
A name is only listed once, no matter how many times they read the thread - 300/400 readers per thread is quite a lot, are you sure all your threads are really read by that many ?
Anyway, 300 names will be about an extra 9K/Bytes on the page (as a reasonable guess).

Since he has 14.931 members I would say that is highly possible. Wow! That is a huge number for daily traffic for shared hosting.

I am pretty sure because I read the number from... your script ;)
Some threads (announcements of new functions) have more than 550 readers...
(even if in the weekend the traffic is lower)

thanks. Since the visualization is allowed just for the admins (two of us), I guess this is not a big deal.
Ehm... the names visualization is the only thing that affects the bandwidth? :o
I mean enabling (without visualization) or disabling it, from the bandwidth point of view is the same?
Sorry if the question sounds trivial or dumb, but I really like this hack, it is very useful for administration purposes.

Few days ago we shifted on a VPS, same hosting; now we are comparing the bandwidth used beetween the old and new server, this is why I am asking these trivial questions about the bandwidth usage (I added this hack after the "moving on").
BTW, the hosting is doing a really great work, even if when we were on their "pure" shared hosting, the website was always fast and reliable (and the support very quick, that is what I like the most, as per vbulletin, both .com and .org  ).
Thank you guys! ;)

The extra bandwidth is because the list of names is passed as part of the page, if you disable the display of names, then there will be no exta bandwidth.

QUESTION? I would like members to see who has viewed a thread as well without being able to view ip addresses. Possible?
Paul M
04-19-2007, 04:01 PM
As it says, the view IP and view readers are separate permissions ;
There are settings for the following (in vBulletin Options > Who Has Read a Thread) ;
1. Turn the system on/off.
2. Restrict the display to certain usergroups
3. Restrict the IP display to certain usergroups.
4. Restrict the display to a set number of days.
So yes, just set it up correctly in the settings.
Paul, when I try and upload it from my computer it says
XML Error: not well-formed (invalid token) at Line 1

Use the standard product uninstall option.

I was wondering if we can have an option to sort threads in forumdisplay by most thread readers?
Thanks again.
Paul M

Nope, that would be somewhat difficult as the number is not stored in the thread record.
Hello Paul, It installed
I need that the usergroups of Administrator be NOT shown al to visit the theme.
Is possible:confused:??
Thanks
Paul...S.O.S. hehehe:erm:

I don't fully understand the question, but you cannot exclude usergroups from being displayed if that's what you are asking.

works great!!!!
Indeed that is what I ask, I do not want that the group of Admin is visible to the rest of users, or indicates to the rest of groups that I, like admin, have read that subject.
Thanks
