How to set permissions for directories?

I would like to create certain directories on my site that I can set permissions for using VB. Mainly to keep images and files protected, and do it the simplest way possible. If our members send a link to a page or image that we want protected, it has it's own permissions. Nothing too fancy, just a simple thing, but I cannot find anything for directories, only for individual files.

If you're on Linux, CHMOD. If you're running IIS, just use Plesk and Folder Permissions.

Yeah, I know those, but they don't tie into VB, unless I am missing something here.
I want to set the permissions by usergroups.

Oh okay, I didn't catch that part. I'm not sure how that could be done.
