View Full Version : Pimp My Board Contest

It would be work, so we wouldn't want to do it more than once every six months or so, but the idea goes like this - based on MTV's Pimp My Ride.
Board owners submit essays on why they should be chosen. Somehow the essays are judged (TBD). Then we coders and graphics artists 'pimp' their board. We'd need artists volunteers, and coder volunteers, and someone to organize, etc. etc...
As I said, it would be work, but it sounds really fun, and good community spirit. Not to mention great for whoever gets their board pimped.

LOL this could be really fun! We would need to see a good support from coders and designers for those who are interested. It would also have to be very well organized.

Yup, collaboration and organisation will be a must :)

We'd also need a selection panel of people who would pick a board owner based on true need and not popularity. It would be more fun, I think, to do this for a charity or non-profit board.

Yup, totally agreed :)

I think the idea would have to be 'taken over' by the staff, and run by them. It's too big otherwise. Volunteers could come from the members, but I don't think it could be organized well enough to be pulled off without if becoming 'official' and staff run.

I think the selection of the Board should be the choice of the coders and designers donating their time for the contest. I'm sure charity or non-profit boards will benefit from this as well.
Edit: @Hambil, yes the main organization will be run by the staff in the event we decide to go with this. :)

I like the idea of charity and non-profit, but I think it should be essay driven, and not exclusive to charity and non-profit. Let the essay make the case, and whoever makes the best case wins.

I'd be interested in lending a hand. Feel free to shoot me a PM.
Interesting!
With a low budget NFP site, having pros on board to take the sites look and functionalies to the next level is something I can only dream about.
I would love to have assistance as the sites contents is my only forte.
My best recourse has been to try and keep things simple, but this has not been easy when covering complex issues, combined with a futuristic vision beyond what vB can presently offer and an audience requiring certain functionalities.
Extreme makeover? ... I am reminded of the saying ...
Be careful for what you wish ;)

You guys should definetly try this. It would be really nice to see all types of people who want to have things done on their board, but can't (for some reason or other). Either way, I really support this idea.

I could use a good pimping my self...
16 year old spending everything he earns on his site, and I am devoted as heck. I probly spend 3-6 hours everyday with my siter somehow and its still not perfect. www.boardingscene.com could definately use something like this.
Anyways I am in for being a designer as well.

I think it's a great idea and a very good way of bringing the community together, most importantly working together. however, Something someone said further up the page (he was called a party pooper) I think the main priority here is to get issues resolved on this forum first before staff resources are leased out.
Still a good idea and I would certainly allocate some time to helping out.

Custom graphics, custom hacks (which may later be published on this site). It would obviously depend on what the forum was about and what the owner wanted.

I am sure you would :) Unfortunately, if this ever gets off the ground (which seems unlikely) the board would be selected based on an essay from the board owner and a vote by all those volunteering time.

it should be a public vote, nominated and voted for like Board of the Month.

When I envisioned this I did not want it to be a popularity contest. I wanted it to be a charity effort. I wanted the effort to go to boards that needed it, and concepts that deserved it. An essay voted on by those who actually sign up to do the work seemed logical to me, and still does. We have a board of the month already - this is a very different concept. This is developers and designers giving something real and concrete to the vBulletin community that we can all feel proud of when the day is over.
Think of Pimp-my-ride, where people plead their case as to why they need the help - or Extreme Makeover: Home Edition, where again it is done on the bases of the applicants 'story' and need.

No, i hear that. But i think the public should have a say. As it is these are most likely all new forums, nobody can pick favorites so quickly so its not a popularity contest. The public will read the essays just like us, and we do the work. I dont think it will work well if its just an inside vote.'
But hey, its your idea. Ill be glad to help out.
