View Full Version : Mini Mods - Make your forum's speed seem faster
BoYagoob

*Staff note: This has an effect in Microsoft Internet Explorer + Firefox*
(but still not tested on others).
Hi,
This is my second modification and I hope you like it. :)
What it does: It lets your members and your visitors feel that your site or forum is very fast when they access it. It is just like a trick only not really it does speed up your forum. ;)
Version of vB: It works with ALL versions: vB1, vB2, vB3.0.x, vB3.5.x, vB3.6.x, vB3.7.x, vB3.8.x, and any version in future. More than this, you can use it for any simple website. :smoke:
Time to install: ~ 1 sec.
How to install: There are no database changes, additional files, ... etc. But there is only one change in a template.
1. Open the HEADER template.
2. Place the following code at the top of the contents:
<meta http-equiv="Page-Exit" content="BlendTrans(Duration=0)" />
<meta http-equiv="Page-Enter" content="BlendTrans(Duration=0)" />
Note: Otherwise, you can put it at the top of HEADINCLUDE template.
3. Save & Enjoy. ;)
More information: Click here (http://www.secretgeek.net/fajax.asp).
Please, if you want to use this modification, click INSTALL (https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/vborg_miscactions.php?do=installhack&threadid=121315). :)

so what does this code do?
BoYagoob
07-16-2006, 05:53 AM
You are welcome :)
so what does this code do?
Try to change the numbers in the code: (Duration=0), and you will see its effects. But I used numbers 0 to make it seems to be a fast loaded page. :)

Thanks alot for your addition, and I have just put that link in the first post. This also answers to Robbed's question. :)
Interesting... but you should probably note that it only works with Internet Explorer.

BoYagoob, thank you for your contribution.
The title has been edited slightly as we felt it was slightly misleading. I have also added a note that this only works in IE.

Ok i just gave this a try on a board that has a lot of forums (500+) where the forumhome is loading kinda slow (5-10 seconds to fully load). In the top of the page there are 2 animated banner images.
I do understand that is only a visual trick and doesn't really speed things up.
How i tested?
- Applied the above change
- Did an initial pageload (i asume it doesn't make a difference on the first page load)
- Scrolled to the bottom of the page
- Did a page refresh
This was really a confusing ;) experience.
- To my feeling it took a bit longer until the cursor changed to the 'busy' icon.
- While still viewing the bottom of the page (where i ofcourse can not click anything, since the page is not really loaded yet), the 2 dynamic banner images where showing on top of the text in the bottom of the page.
- After the normal time it takes to load the page, the screen seems 'suddenly' to refresh, the 2 banner images that where blended over the bottom of the page disappeared, and normal control was returned.
Bottom line i think is that while it might give a better look on some forums, it might also be causing confusion on others. So use it with care.
If you have a relative fast loading page (from a human perspective, loading in less then 1-2 seconds), it might give the human eye the impression of faster loading. If the page takes longer, then it will probably be confusing.

I am very happy to read your reply in my thread :), and as you may know I am a beginner in decoding for vB. Unfortuantly, I can only test this modification only in my own forum and my test forum. So, as you stated it depends in the forums:
Bottom line i think is that while it might give a better look on some forums, it might also be causing confusion on others. So use it with care.
Also, for sure, this is the fact:
If you have a relative fast loading page (from a human perspective, loading in less then 1-2 seconds), it might give the human eye the impression of faster loading. If the page takes longer, then it will probably be confusing.
Kind regadrs. :)

Hm, curious. I can't quite put my finger on the overall effect, it's a little unusual. However my forum is quite fast loading and it does seem to make a bit of an illusional difference as Marco said so I'll see what people think. Or if they notice at all. :)
bashy
07-16-2006, 12:11 PM
My forums are fast loading 'ish anyway, but since installing/adding this IE does appear to be quicker ;)
It appears to hold, then load the full page in 1 swoop...The hold is about 3 seconds
Please can you try to find a way for Firefox and other browsers?
I for 1 will keep this running thanks...
Marco van Herwaarden
07-16-2006, 01:20 PM
There seems to be a way to do this with other browsers, but that would require a JS-script. Look at the explanation link posted on the first page. On that page you will find a second link explaining how to do such a thing for other browser, but it is way more complicated.

Hay this has any effect on search engine listing or bots reading the forum?
I mean bots will mess up reading this code, rank low etc..?
BoYagoob

mmmm I am not sure if I understand your question well, but see if the HEADER template is used in any pages, so the effect will be happened in these pages. :)

Hay this has any effect on search engine listing or bots reading the forum?

I dont think it will. Bots generally avoid Javascript and CSS and stuff like that, they only (for the most part) cover text and links. This doesnt affect either, and since a bot cant submit anything via forms, then it wont even see the effect at all.

I tried it and I'm not sure I like it. If there is something on the new page that is loading slow, it holds up the entire page change until everything is done. In my case, it actually slows things down at times. At least with the old way, you can view parts of the new page while waiting for the rest to load.
Also, while waiting for the a long page transition, it gives the appearance that I.E. has locked up.

Chris Blount .. no problem .. but actually it depends on your server ..
if your server is slow .. of course it will be slow .. if not .. it will seem very fast .. :)

shokran ;)
Thanks for this great addon (or whatever you'd call it).
I would say it's better for smaller sites because, as has been said, it delays it until everything loads. Fortunately my site is not very big so it creates a good effect. However I wouldn't suggest this being used on larger sites because, as has been said, it delays everything.
Thanks again.

You should add the code at the top of the headinclude template, not header. Plus it makes my site seem slower to me - basically makes everything load in the background before displaying the page. :)

Shazz & GamEscape try this post, [here (https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showpost.php?p=1046954&postcount=34)]. You may see the differences.
Erwin but it works fine if it is in the header. :) I will update the thread now to use either. If your forum becomes slow, so the problem is in your server 100%.

It does add a nice effect to small pages but for slow/large sites and slow connections it gets to be really annoying and kind of confusing i've found (IE won't show the busy cursor :S).
Good intentions though and I still think I could use the effect for other sites or experiments I do. :)

09-09-2006, 06:00 PM
As others have said <meta> tags are supposed to be in headinclude or you may confuse non standard browsers. It will work in the header but it's not the place it should be.
Didn't notice a difference in firefox but it does a good job in IE. Changing the 0 to 0.2 for the duration provides a kinda neat fade effect (which is done by the client's browser btw, so no extra server resources are used)

If you have icons like toplist icons or hit checking icons, IE waits for them. Although It helps us to view smoothly, It makes the pages load slower because of waiting for getting the whole images.

A newbbie question...
I make a 'fade' effect using replacement variable manager, changing
<head>
for
<head>
<meta http-equiv="Page-Enter" content="blendTrans(Duration=0.3)" />
I make this cause i use ipb too and Michael share this tip in this tutorial (http://www.invisionmodding.com/forums/index.php?tutorial=20)
obviously i can change the setting to zero...
is the same ? or this way in the thread is better?

I’m using this with the following condition:
<if condition="is_browser('ie')">
<meta http-equiv=Page-Exit content=BlendTrans(Duration=0) />
<meta http-equiv=Page-Enter content=BlendTrans(Duration=0) />

Allows you to keep the page valid html / xhtml… and saves other browsers from reading them two lines :P

You can tell the effect it has on IE, yes.
Thanks,
Mat.
I did 2 video tutorials on 2 blank vB test sites, One was my friends and one was mine.
Both loaded the same with and without the code.
But I guess if it seems faster to you guys that works too..
Its not the ‘loading time’ it’s the fact that it eliminates the flickering… its been said many times in this thread…

dude, this actually works. holy crap.
I'm too lazy to look it up, but what is this code ACTUALLY doing to my forums to make it load faster and why wouldn't it load fast anyway BEFORE I added this code to my header template?
I've followed this thread and wish to add some technical input and insight into what's going on, and how to implement it most easily into vB.
In the HEADINCLUDE template at the bottom or top include this single line:
<meta content="BlendTrans(Duration=0.01)" http-equiv="Page-Exit" />
This is all you need, and it also follows a format all modern browsers can understand including XHTML DTD specifications which all the good templates utilize you can download here. I've successfully tested it on MSIE, Opera, Netscape and Firefox, latest release versions of each as of this writing.
Folks, that's all you need to do, and this is web developer trick that's been around for while, much like GZIP compression has been.
Technically speaking, as the article linked earlier in this thread explained, on page refreshes, i.e. form submissions and other redirects, this command helps the browser reduce screen flicker and can be exploited for fade effects as well. The value I'm using is the best universal value (after many others have tried this or that) and you just set it and forget it.
You only need the exit argument because flicker issues only occur on redirects or refreshes on the page that is displayed following the task. The other argument is necessary only if you're intentionally fading or other cosmetic effects to exploit this ability.
The references people have been making about AJAX and FAJAX is easy enough to explain. AJAX is code use to display dynamic content "in place" so as to avoid screen refresh and might even call scripts that run server side fetching content from a database. To the user, the screen just dynamically changes, i.e. tables moving around, Netflix like informational dialogs displaying on top of content, or Google customized home page where you can drag/drop content as you build the page.
FAJAX is a term developers use to describe the AJAX effect of dynamic content updating, without actually using AJAX code. It's faking it, hence the term FAJAX.
In truth this meta command is one of those many W3C header tags that are not intended to be universally supported but exist for developers of browsers and plugins who want to utilize such features to manipulate the browser's abilities.
Due to the fact it's technically unsupported, you might see this ability lost in future browser implementations and it might even corrupt wireless or other future Internet technologies if the DTD doesn't specify this command. Some programmer out there might not be smart enough to ignore it or exploit it.
But for most of us, it works great and such issues are not a concern. Enjoy.

I tried this out on firefox 2 and ie7 (vista).
"<meta content="BlendTrans(Duration=0.01)" http-equiv="Page-Exit" />" in the headinclude (which is the same as this mod).
Firefox 2 seems to have already implemented this type of technology into the browser, so I couldn't see a difference. Firefox 2 is noticeably smoother and faster than IE7 right out of the box.
There was indeed a difference in ie7. However, I did not like it (some may). It does eliminate the redrawing of the entire page (as far as you can see), but it actually takes longer to provide feedback to the user that something is loading. Essentially the whole page has to load first, then it switches to it (like double buffering). It's a nice effect, but in reality the page seems to take longer to load with ie7/vista (this is with a core2duo powerful computer). Without it, elements on the page begin to reload immediately. With it, the entire page redraws at once after a delay (end completion result is the same, but I think users prefer to see feedback when they click a link).

I'm reserving judgement.....
Navigating across the navbar seems quicker, because the banner remains constant whilst the next page is loading...then the content changes. Gives a much smoother effect.
Clicking on a thread within a forum seems slower...waiting for the whole page to load before anything happens gives the impression of slowness, where as before you waited (but viewed) the page loading.
That said, my members haven't complained after the first 24 hours of installing.

Will this still work in the headinclude template? It gives off validation errors in the header template like mad.
webgeek247
04-02-2008, 01:50 PM
yaghoob, for the meta tag to be xhtml compliant you need to change this:
<META http-equiv=Page-Exit content=BlendTrans(Duration=0)>
<META http-equiv=Page-Enter content=BlendTrans(Duration=0)>
to this:
<meta http-equiv="Page-Exit" content="BlendTrans(Duration=0)" />
<meta http-equiv="Page-Enter" content="BlendTrans(Duration=0)" />
The effect is very good. I like it. **Installed** :D

Anyone having problems, try this in your Header template at the top, the 0 was there, and you were suppose to try numbers larger than zero. I know this post will get lost in this thread, but this works really slick. This is an old webmasters trick! Old, but still effective!
<META http-equiv="Page-Enter" content="blendTrans(Duration=0.2)">
<META http-equiv="Page-Exit" content="blendTrans(Duration=0.2)">
My first and last post in this thread. Sorry, I cannot keep repeating myself.
Oh, by the way, I am still running vB 3.6.8, which the coder posted this for.
Enjoy!
Boofo
04-29-2008, 07:28 AM
If you use it in the header, you get validation errors. I uninstalled it due to that reason.

04-29-2008, 07:47 AM

You will get validation errors in 3.6.x also if you have it in the header template.
woodcreeker
04-29-2008, 09:47 AM
Okay the string does cause validation errors. (I checked an XHTML Markup Validator)
All those errors are refering to is "...this error can create cascading effects" This is more of a warning than a real error, I firmly believe that, but it could cause parsing errors for just a few, but most can safely run this on their forums with no ill effects.
I know you guys are pure coders, and that is awesome. (I wish I had the time, been programming my whole life, off and on, about 30 yrs). I interpret that error "flag" as a warning, and this may be the actual nature of how this hack works. I actually forgot about it for a couple of years!
Ol' Wise One, like I said above, Boofo (and I am acknowledging you, too, Jase2 and djpassion) I still do hear you guys!! You guys deserve a lot of respect. There is so much wrong in a lot of the code we work with in the first place when it comes to XHTML, it takes numerous hours to hunt it all down and fix all of it.
If anyone on my forums complains, I will just pull it back out. I doubt it, but I only make small changes here and there, so I can easily go back and fix any problems that crop up. For now, I am leaving it in, and I am sure it will work fine. Takes just a second to pull it out, anyway.
My final code on this hack to eliminate most (if not all) XHTML validation errors.
<meta http-equiv="page-enter" content="blendTrans(Duration=0.2)"/>
<meta http-equiv="page-exit" content="blendTrans(Duration=0.2)"/>
Some Validators may simply warn you about these statements, and not give you true errors. I am not going to go through a bunch of those code debuggers, anyway, to get to the heart of the problem, if there is one.
Boofo, I wasted an hour screwing around (LOL) and I didn't really want to on this, but that is okay. Sometimes I like to putz around. I actually found a couple of errors I forgot to double-check !
Hang In There, Good Luck and Stay Cool Guys !! :)

From what I am reading this holds off the screen transition untill all information on the loading location is loaded? My forums involve several threads that have high picture count and most are oversized and need to run through my image resizer. Does this mean that my page won't load untill the pictures do?
Since this is what I'm getting is their a way to make this forum specific?
Ill most likely try this out either way though. Interesting idea.
