Custom announcement box?

I have the below box that displays on my front page showing statistics for my forums:

I would like to have it so that the right side box (on the front page) does not display stats but rather short custom announcement that I enter (site news, etc). I know what template and where to edit but I don't know what to put in it's place to get the functionality I want. :cross-eyed:

Is there any easy way that I can implement this so that I can also update the announcements via AdminCP? Thanks.

If you know the could could you not just put the news there?

I'm up for that...but 'how' can I do this...any idea?

You'd need a plugin to do that most likely. There's probably something out that has a similar functionality. Or you could show links to the latest threads from a certain forum, like news or something. That might be simpler.
