Didn't see this posted in a different thread, but in case I missed it, sorry!
Are you guys manually creating the new avatars for staff members that has their old avatar within it, or have you automated it with some type of plugin?

They are manually created.

They're begging us, "Please make it into a plugin! Feed us code! Get us cool avatars! ARGHHHHH!"
* bonus points for whomever can tell me what movie I based that quote off of :)

That quote was from a movie? What kind of a movie would mention 'plugins' and 'avatars'?

Yes, I bastardized the quote. Replace " make it into a plugin", "code", "cool avatars" with other words, and it's spot on.

Ya that would be easy.
Create a table in the postbit to hold the "badge" image and create a small cell where each member's 50x50 avatar shows up. The "badge" would be a background image. It would overlay 1 image over another.
You could make <if> / <else /> statments to change the "badge" image based on usergroup access. You could put the dynamic forum username over the "badge" with some HTML markup.
You could also make it a .png file and have the data add the avatar to that area...

I will probably make this into a hack for staff usergroups in the future. good idea!

Can't wait to see this hack up, it would be an awesome addition to vB's everywhere.

So, has anyone made this into a hack yet?
As for the quote, it's from P.C.U.

My coworker (who has never touched vb, but would probably be considered as an expert in PHP/coding) explained to me the gist of something similar using GD.

ok so I read all this and still have no idea how to get an avatar. It sure sucks being a newbie. If there is anyone who lives in BC I will pay double your wage to come and set all this stuff up on my board! LOL

Click on usercp then edit avatar. You can select one from our selection available, or you can upload your own from your PC providing it is within the size limits specified on that page.

are you saying that it uploaded but it's not showing in your postbits?
if so, you may want to check you USERCP options ... make sure Thread Display Options / Visible Post Elements / Show Avatars is checked
Do you have a URL?

I do not know your terminology yet so I do not know what a postbit is hahaha. It shows on my profile but not on my post like it does here. If that makes sense.
I will go back and investigate the usercap options. thank you
URL is the name of the site such as www?

Yeah, URL is www.yoursite.com. :)
Postbit is the left side of the post here, where your name/location/etc is. =)

Do me a fav, start a new thread about this in this forum:

So that we're out of the Staff Avatars thread. :) I'll answer your questions and help you out as much as I can in there.
(Just to keep things neat and in the proper place).
Short answer: No, there's no truth to that guy's statement.

If someone told you that and you have vB, they're an idiot. If you also have an Invision Board, you should update your board to the latest version.

May be possible to take the shell staff image and merge it as a new file on the board. That way, mods could have 2 avatars: the shell + norm avatar for areas they mod, and just the norm avatar for areas they don't mod. Depends on the preference of the admins of course.

I meant the mods / admins of the forum who would install a hack like this. I would like to see this as a hack of some type for other boards to use. I could see this definitely being used on the forums I help out with, and of great use to other people as well.

Exactly.
Currently I'm using ranks to denote staff on a couple sites I work for, and I think having a nice set of Staff Avatars via a hack would be far more visually pleasing.

FYI in the afforementioned thread (https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showthread.php?t=120582) a bunch of us have worked together to make a basic working hack of this (using tables currently).
