This extension will automatically check new posts against the Akismet (http://akismet.com/) spam rulesets and identify spam if it is posted on your site. All spam is set to moderated status until an admin/moderator approves/deletes it.
This setting can be set on a usergroup basis so only certain usergroups are scanned.
I have no affiliation with Akismet, I just know that it catches about 99% of all spam I get on my blogs.
You will need an API key to use this product, but they are free and you can get one immediately at wordpress.com (http://www.wordpress.com) when you sign up.
Installs easily, just upload the included files, and install the product file. NO TEMPLATE EDITS!
You should probably use a promotion strategy outlined here:
https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showpost.php?p=1013953&postcount=18
This will reduce your Akismet usage and not filter your regular users who you are pretty confident will not post SPAM.
A good mod that works with this hack is the "Moderation Queue on FORUMHOME" hack here:
https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showthread.php?t=120150

I am a user of Wordpress and can totally recommend this plugin, not only will it catch the vast majority of spam comments, but it is also intelligent enough to learn from its mistakes too. Excellent job with the port to vBulletin.

Akismet is a site that bloggers (originally wordpress bloggers) use to eliminate comment spam on their site. If you have ever run a blog, you know that you start getting comment spam about 3 minutes after your blog makes it on Google.
They have begun porting it out to many other applications:
MT
Drupal
phpBB
Blojsom
Geeklog
Nucleus
b2evolution
Movable Type
phorum
The service is basically free unless you are a very large site then it is a whopping $5/month.
My inspiration for this was the fact that all of a sudden I am starting to get posts about intimacy drugs and cell phones. I get these same posts in my blogs, so I decided to try and see if Akismet would work with VB. It worked perfectly and basically ended this type of spam for me.
I think ideally what you want to do is use this for new users, and when a user graduates to a new usergroup, eliminate this check for them.
In the future, I would like to put in the spam reporting feature into this mod so as to add an option to "Report Spam Then Delete", I am just limited in my time right now so it may take a while.

If you mean by bumping posts, then probably not. This just looks for SPAM.

Thanks for the port over, it'll be interesting to see how well this works for vBulletin as well. It's pretty good for WP from what I've seen so far.
As for Post #2 - it would depend on what they're posting I suppose. If they are simply posting thanks, appreciate the info or other such random comments, it probably won't be identified as spam. Akismet looks for actual SPAM based comments when checking against its database and sends those identified to the moderation queue.
Awsome idea :) I personally love Akismet on my own blog and this looks really useful.
Great tool, when I had my first test forum open on my site, I had about 30 to 50 spam posts a day, I discovered after a week the whole forum was one big advertisement for viagra and other means to increase your thingy, very annoying, this will solve this!
Great work!

http://akismet.com/commercial/
Basically:
so we're saying if you're making more than $500/mo from your blog we ask that you use a $5/mo pro-blogger Akismet API
So basically, if your forum brings in more than $500 a month, they ask you give 1 percent or less of that profit to help keep spam off your site.
Honestly, that really isn't an issue. I would trade 1% of profits to keep spam off my moneymaker.

Rulesets, no. Akismet is a database of known spam, spammers, and rulesets. Posts are sent to them, and the result (true or false) is sent back. They generally block over 95% of spam.

I'm really interested in this atm because I'm looking for an anti-spam solution, and so far it's between this and SpamBuster (https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showthread.php?t=109258).
This would very likely have much better spam detection, but I really don't like the idea of running every single post through it when in my experience all spam is generated by a new poster. If this only checked the post for spam if it was in among their first x posts it would be much more my cup of tea (this is a feature of SpamBuster).
Thanks for the work, and I'll be keeping my eye on this.

You can set it on a group by group basis so not everyone's post is screened.

I have a user (long time existing member) that did post a few things that would've likely been caught as spam when in fact they weren't. It was just an odd way the post and numerous urls were laid out in it.. so i can see why it caught that msg and a few others..
However... this user is now just trying to reply typing in plain text with no urls and every post they make goes right to moderation?? How on earth do i exempt someone or teach Akismet that this user is fine? The plugin and akismet has been working flawlessly on the board and has caught every real piece of spam but this is beginning to annoy me.
The user is just replying like i am in this thread as usual but they go right to moderation.. is it learning by username too? is there a way to fix this??

Most likely, that users IP and/or Uname combo has been blacklisted. Here is what I do on my forums:
Create a group called Registered Users Promoted.
Copy the same settings as you have for the Registered Users group EXCEPT set the option "Filter Posts With Akismet" to no.
Then click the link labeled: "Promotions" and create a new promotion to:
Select the usergroup: Registered Users
reputation level: 0
days registered: 2
posts: 5
promotion strategy: Posts and (Reputation or Date)
promotion type: Primary Usergroup
Move to usergroup: Registered Users Promoted
Now when a registered user has been a member for more than 2 days, AND has more than 5 posts, they will be "promoted" to the group that has no spam filtering. You can edit the promotion requirements to what you see fit.
Generally SPAM is posted from flyby registrations that register with the sole intention of making a spam post, and disappearing.

06-22-2006, 11:28 PM
I just set that up a bit ago and basically created a new group based on registered users.. all i did was turn on akismet for the first group and turned it off for the second promoted group.
i ran the task and had promotions updated, i checked the groups to ensure the proper users were in their primary promoted group (which they were).
Now when the plugin is enabled I have promoted user group users getting filtered by the plugin, how is that possible? The users in question are clearly in the promoted group and that group has AKismet filtering off... :(
Jafo232
06-22-2006, 11:44 PM
Did you set the promotion type to: Primary Usergroup?
dead7
06-22-2006, 11:47 PM
Yeah, all the users in the promoted group are in there as its primary group. When double checking the promotion it also shows that Promotion Type was in fact Primary. Any other ideas?

nevermind i found the problem i think..

I'm testing this out on a few of my boards now. It seems that the boards I implemented it on are having one problem now though.
I use vbadvanced for the home page. For some reason you can not login via the front page anymore. Or rather, you appear to be logging in but it comes back to the vbadvanced page and you are still not logged in. You can login from the forums fine.
Is this just coincidence or could this product have caused this issue for me?

I took that advice. I should have no more than a few members that get their posts checked. Currently I have only 7 people as registered. Everyone else has been moved to another usergroup. After 5 posts they will be moved too. Works very well, thanks again!

If you really want to test it, find a spam post already on your site, make sure you belong to a primary usergroup that is being filtered, copy the spam post into a new thread.
If you have members in custom usergroups this hack really screws up the access masks .. had to click un-install

What exactly do you mean by that?
I'm looking to get something like this in place. However, I don't want to have to build a new usergroup and move people into it as previously mentioned.
It appears to have slowed down posting as well.
There is another hack here that allows you to specify the post count of users that have SPAM blocking applied... (i.e. less than 10). It would be nice if this was an option vs. messing with usergroups.
I'd use the other one (SpamBuster 1.0.0) but it too isn't working correctly and the author seems to be too busy to support it.

Well I've just installed this, and its split my members into two group, registered users and Registered users promoted (Ues I'm using the two different usergroups so regular members wont have their posts filtered). Odd thing is the users in both groups all have above 5 posts, and have been members for longer then 2 days. It that normal?
Edit: Never mind.... It turns out there are a HELL of a lot of users without 5 posts. I mis read the usergroup stats info.... WOW

Check the permissions you put in the promoted usergroups and also check their access masks. I have no experience with the CMS, but I would imagine there are settings in the CMS to allow certain usergroups.

Hello
I just installed this, but it doesn't seem to be checking my post. I'm running vBulletin 3.6.4 and have Usergroup/Promotion set up.
I have 2 users in Registered Users.
"Filter Posts with Akismet" is set to 'yes' in that group
Promotion is set to move user to Registered Users Promoted after 2 days.
I have Akismet Key entered in vBulletin Options -> Akismet Anti-Spam.
I try to enter the 'test' spam they recommend of viagra-123-test in the subject and body, and it quickly submits to the database. I have other applications using Akismet, and there is a slight pause while it's connecting to their server. It really appears that this plugin is not connecting to Akismet's server.
I tried with ak_spam.php in the / and in /includes/ same outcome for both.
Am I missing something? Is it a vBulletin version issue?
Thanks!

As he mentioned in the description of the plugin, you may setup a secondary usergroup whereby your users are automatically promoted out of the temporary new user group after x number of posts. then just filter posts of new users through the akismet plugin. I have set this up on my board and it's working wonders. Another suggestion if NoSpam! plugin.

Most likely, that users IP and/or Uname combo has been blacklisted. Here is what I do on my forums:
Create a group called Registered Users Promoted.
Copy the same settings as you have for the Registered Users group EXCEPT set the option "Filter Posts With Akismet" to no.
ok, i'm looking at this, since akismet works wonders for my blog. no spam at all! but i'm not sure exactly how it behaves on vb. my understanding with other posts is that it should work on vb 3.67 and 3.68. if that's not right, please let me know. :)
you mentioned most likely in this example above, the username/ip has been blacklisted. does akismet blacklist it in a table in the vb database or what? and that blacklisted info is not transferred the the vb area for blocked ips and emails, right? so if i ever removed akisment, i'd best get that info out first, i'm thinking?
and how might this work with infractions?
i'm wanting to automate our spam-whacking. so i figured, set up spammer auto-ban in infractions. akismet will pop potential spam into moderation que where the mod can decide if it's a spammer to whack or just release it in the unlikely event it's harmless.
currently, my mods will ban both ip and email of spammers, in addition to username. it looks like the autoban from infractions system only hits the username, but i'm not sure about that, either...and i'm not entirely sure that the ip and email banning is even all that helpful done globally like it is now.
and would this work to leave my registered group the same, but set up a new usergroup that's basically probationary, under 10 posts or whatever, that's the default upon signing up?
input appreciated.
Jafo232
09-05-2007, 04:58 AM
However akismet decides positives is unknown to me. VB never gets that info. It just asks akismet "Do you think this is spam?" and they answer yes or no. The plugin does not do anything to the user other than put the said post into moderation. It would then be up to you to do what you will with said user.

i've having a similar problem trying to completely uninstall this; i cannot edit usergroups after an uninstall.
if i reinstall and disable as the other poster was directed, i can edit usergroups without issue, but it retains the akismet permissions radio button at the bottom of the usergroup edit page. if i completely uninstall it, at the bottom of the usergroup option page, the radio buttons remain with _no text_ describing what it is, and the query always has this error...

It would be cool to integrate the settings shown here (https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showpost.php?p=1013953&postcount=18) into the mod instead of having to create a special usergroup just for this mod. Thanks!

Does this mod work for PM spam too?

No it does not. I myself don't allow users to send PM's until X amount of posts are made.

Mentioned this in another thread but it seems that only the URL, user_ip and user_agent are required arguments for the akismet API (note: not the actual message)
With that in mind, would it make sense to also use this to optionally check during the registration process as well?
I consistently see that the IP and/or email and name associated with flagged messages are associated with known spamming activities so there should be a fairly accurate hit ratio.
This would also save us the trouble of cleaning up the moderated posts and banning the users after the fact by either preventing them from signing up altogether or putting them in a n even more restrictive group.
Regardless of the combination of Human detection, I still get 5-10 registrations and 20-30 attempted posts. I've even seen some spammers create suggestive user ids as a means of spamming via the member list.

I do not see an option for filtering on my usergroup.
I installed the plugin, and have another user groups I created and created a promotion, but I can not find where to filter user groups.

Ok, the XML files do not go in your root folder. They go in in the includes/xml folder.

i have downloaded and installed this. But how did not find how to run this against current forum. I wanted to clean up posts in my forum which are spammy. Or is there a way i can schedule this to run every day at some time so that it will either delete or move the threads/posts to moderation queue?

It would be really awesome if we could set it so that it only checks for spam on users with under a certain amount of posts. It looks like VB 3.7 has that OPTION in the control panel, but the rest of the Akismet stuff is missing.

There is only one xml file, bitfield_ak_spam.xml, and it says "invalid file specified" when installing. Won't work... :(

Edit: ops, sorry the mistake, vB 3.7.3 PL1 have an askimet antispam integrated :)
Can someone post a better explanation for installing this mod, like
when you download the mode it has a product-Akisment Anti-Spam.xml file and a folder named upload with ak_spam.php file and folder named includes/xml/bitfield_ak_spam
so i get that you need to upload the bitfield_ak_spam into the includes/xml/ folder on the server.
I am guessing that the ak_spam.php file need to be put on the root of the host www ?
then in the vbulletin admin what do you do from there? please be detailed and leave a click path for each link to get to the right location you need to alter for this mod. t
many many thx

Hi all!
I have a nice question to you :)
I have installed Akismet and it appeared in the menu... I created the new group and I created the promotion rule from "registered users" to the new group.
I still didn't receive spam, but now Akismet is active for "registered users", and if a post is detected as spam, should be sent to the post moderation section.
My question is: is there a possibility to receive an email to notice that there is a post waiting to be moderated?
I asked Vbulletin.com support, and they told me:
go to the ACP -> Forums & Moderators -> Forum Manager -> Edit Forum and look at the Moderation Options section.
I did add my email address there, but now I receive an email for each post!! Even if it is a normal post...
How can I do to receive a mail notifing about threads/posts waiting for the moderation?
I think this topic can be interesting for everybody...
Thank you.

Hey guys,
Having some trouble and could really use some help. I've scanned the thread and haven't found the answer.
AKISMET is working on my vB, meaning, it's finding the posts that are spam, BUT...it doesn't hold it until the post is released by a moderator. So it goes right up on the site for everyone to see. What can I do?
Jafo232

Then it isn't working then. VB as of 3.7 now has Akismet built in. This plugin is no longer needed.

I see. I didn't realize that. Can you point me to a resource that talks about AKISMET in vB 3.7.X?

Jafo, thank you for suggesting other mods which work well with your own. That really helps us to maximize the amount of quality we can realize from your products.
I noticed in your post that you are interested in donations, which will motivate you to work more on plugins.
When I was at the akismet site, I noticed their system for gathering donations. Pure brilliance. I recommend setting up a page for yourself with a similar system. It would reap results. I was so impressed that I actually made a youtube video to share with other web masters in my clique.

Is it used in VB version 4?

Chuotlac, it comes pre-included. Source (http://www.vbulletin.com/forum/showthread.php/265427-Global-Akismet-Key?p=1532630&viewfull=1#post1532630).
I installed on vb4, then removed, and it left changes in the database which make it impossible to update some usergroups.
I have seen a number of threads which relate to other users having the same challenge.
If that happens to anyone else, see solution here (http://www.rpgreseller.com/crap-217/vbulletin-rebuild-bitfields-919627.html#post926629).
